What Is Windows on Arm? Definition, Apps, and Compatibility

Windows on Arm is Windows running on an Arm64 PC. The Windows version and availability of native apps and drivers determine compatibility.

Windows on Arm is the standard Windows operating system running on a PC with an Arm64 processor. It is not a separate Windows brand: the difference is the processor architecture, which determines whether an app runs natively or through emulation.

What “Windows on Arm” means

Arm64, also called AArch64, is the processor architecture used by the computer. Windows on Arm is Windows built to run on that hardware. Microsoft describes the platform as supporting both Arm-native applications and, depending on the Windows version, applications compiled for x86 or x64 through emulation. Microsoft’s Windows on Arm documentation explains the platform.

Native apps and emulated apps

Arm64 apps run natively

An app with an Arm64 version runs directly on the Arm processor rather than being translated from another processor architecture. Microsoft says native Arm versions generally provide the best performance and power optimization. When choosing a PC, check whether the apps central to your work offer Arm64 builds.

x86 and x64 apps use emulation

Emulation translates blocks of instructions written for x86 or x64 so they can run on Arm64; Windows can cache translated code for later use. This can let many existing desktop apps work without an Arm-native release, but it does not guarantee that every app, feature, peripheral, or workflow will work or perform identically. Microsoft’s compatibility guidance says most Windows apps can be installed and run on Windows 11 Arm PCs, while recommending native versions for the best results. Microsoft’s Windows Arm PC FAQ addresses app compatibility.

Windows version changes what can be emulated

Windows version Emulated app types described by Microsoft
Windows 10 on Arm x86 applications
Windows 11 on Arm x86 and x64 applications

Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Microsoft’s Prism emulator. Microsoft says Prism is optimized for Snapdragon processors, and some performance features require Snapdragon X series hardware. That does not establish a universal speed advantage for every app or Arm PC; results depend on the app and device. Microsoft’s x86 and x64 emulation documentation describes these version and emulator details.

Why app emulation does not solve driver compatibility

Emulation supports user-mode applications, not kernel-mode drivers. Drivers and other components that run in kernel mode need native Arm64 builds. That distinction matters for specialist peripherals, security tools, hardware utilities, and other software that depends on low-level system components. Before relying on one of these, confirm that its maker supports the exact Arm64 Windows device and version you plan to use. Microsoft’s Windows on Arm documentation covers this limitation.

Arm64EC and Arm64X: terms developers may encounter

Arm64EC allows a gradual port

Arm64EC is a Windows application binary interface that lets native Arm64EC code coexist in a process with x64 code running under emulation. Developers can therefore move parts of an application to native Arm execution without first converting every x64 dependency. Microsoft’s Arm64EC documentation explains the approach.

Arm64X supports both Arm64 and Arm64EC code

Arm64X is a PE file format that combines classic Arm64 and Arm64EC content so the relevant code can be used by both types of process. It is primarily a developer and system-binary implementation detail, rather than a setting PC buyers need to change. Microsoft’s Arm64X documentation provides technical details.

How to check whether a Windows on Arm PC fits your needs

  1. List your essential apps. Check with each software maker whether the app has an Arm64 version or supports emulation on the specific Windows version you will use.
  2. Check drivers and low-level components separately. Confirm native Arm64 support for required printers, scanners, security software, VPNs, specialist devices, and other tools that install drivers or kernel components.
  3. Confirm the Windows release. In particular, do not assume Windows 10 and Windows 11 have the same x86 and x64 emulation support.
  4. Assess your actual workload. If an app will be emulated, seek performance information for that app on the specific device rather than assuming emulation will match a native build.
