Chrome’s built-in Reading mode makes supported pages easier to read, but it does not export Markdown. To create Markdown text or a .md file from a page, use a browser extension with an extraction mode suited to the content, then check the result before keeping or sharing it.
Choose between a reading view and a Markdown file
If your goal is to reduce distractions, Chrome Reading mode offers controls for font, spacing, color themes, links, images, and read-aloud. Open a text page, right-click it, and choose Open in reading mode. Chrome also documents ways to enter the feature through the address bar, settings, and a keyboard shortcut; the available route can depend on your Chrome setup. Reading mode changes how a page is presented in the browser. It is not a Markdown exporter, so it does not by itself create Markdown text or a downloadable .md file. For that, choose a page-conversion extension or another extraction workflow.

Pick an extraction mode for the page
Extensions may offer different ways to decide which page content to capture. The mode matters: a page’s main article, its entire layout, and one selected passage are different jobs. The examples below reflect features described in Chrome Web Store listings, not independent quality tests.

Convert the page and check the Markdown
- Decide what to capture. For an article, start with article extraction. Choose whole-page capture when the broader page structure matters, or select text when only a passage is needed.
- Invoke the extension from its available browser control. Depending on the extension, that may be a toolbar button, side panel, context menu, or shortcut. Chrome’s extension documentation describes these interface options and how extensions can access page content: Chrome Extensions documentation.
- Preview the result. Check that headings, links, tables, code, and images are present and arranged as intended. Features differ by extension, and a Markdown preview is not proof that every element converted correctly.
- Change the capture method if needed. If the result contains too much interface clutter, try article or selected-text capture. If it leaves out material you need, try a broader mode and inspect the output again.
- Keep the source context. When available, retain the original page title and URL alongside the Markdown so you can trace the capture back to its source. Page Exporter’s listing describes adding a title-and-URL header for readable-region or selection exports.
What the listed extensions say they offer

It says its extraction heuristic prioritizes
article, thenmain, thenbody. It also warns that dense single-page applications may include interface clutter and that manual selection may help. The listing reports version 1.0.3, updated August 13, 2026.
Store metadata, ratings, and user counts do not establish extraction quality. The inspected listings displayed no ratings for Page to Markdown and Page Exporter.

Chrome says Reading mode is not available for all websites and may not work as expected on some pages. Its help page identifies video and forum sites as formats with compatibility problems, and lists image galleries, interactive maps, forms, quizzes, payment pages, and login screens as examples where behavior may be unexpected. Those cautions concern Chrome Reading mode; they should not be treated as a test of the extensions above.

Extensions that convert a page need access to page content. Chrome’s extension documentation explains content scripts and temporary access through the active-tab permission after a user invokes an extension. Before using one on an authenticated or confidential page, review the requested permissions and the developer’s privacy disclosure. A developer’s statement that processing is local is a claim in the listing, not an independent audit.
