Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting is a built-in Settings feature for controlling compatible RGB and LED devices without relying on a separate manufacturer app. It can apply shared lighting preferences, let you configure individual devices, and allow compatible apps to take control. Compatibility depends on the specific device—not simply on whether it is advertised as RGB.
What Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting does
Dynamic Lighting gives Windows native control of lighting devices that implement the open HID LampArray standard. Microsoft says devices can support the standard in firmware or through a Virtual HID Framework driver. The feature is intended for compatible keyboards, mice, game controllers, headsets and other lighting devices. Microsoft Learn explains the device standard and categories.

It provides settings for brightness, colors and lighting effects, along with controls for which devices and apps can manage the lighting. Microsoft introduced the feature in the Windows 11 update dated November 14, 2023; that release note describes control for devices implementing HID LampArray. Read the KB5032190 release note.

Where to find the controls
- Open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
- Turn Dynamic Lighting on for the compatible devices you want Windows to manage. When it is off, devices use their default lighting behavior.
- Use the global controls for connected devices generally, or select a device card to configure that device separately. Its device-specific settings override the global settings for that device.
- Adjust brightness and choose available effects and colors. Windows update notes have also documented matching the Windows accent color or selecting a custom color; the exact available options can depend on the device.

How apps can take control
Dynamic Lighting has controls for both foreground apps and background lighting controllers. If the option allowing compatible foreground apps to control lighting is enabled, an active supported app can override background lighting control. When that app is minimized or closed, background control can resume.
Under Background light control, Windows lets you prioritize installed apps that registered as ambient controllers. The priority matters when more than one controller could manage the same device: a higher-priority controller may take precedence over Windows’ settings or another app.

Will your RGB device work?
Not necessarily. “RGB” describes lighting capability, not Windows Dynamic Lighting compatibility. Microsoft’s compatibility basis is HID LampArray, and its partner information names manufacturers including Logitech G, Acer, ASUS ROG, HP, Razer, SteelSeries and Twinkly. Those company or ecosystem references do not mean every product from each brand is supported.

- Install current firmware for a compatible device, as Microsoft advises.
- Confirm the device appears in Dynamic Lighting settings; product marketing that only says “RGB” is not enough to establish compatibility.

Why settings may seem ineffective
A compatible app or another background RGB controller may have higher priority and be controlling the device instead. Review the foreground-app option and Background light control in Dynamic Lighting settings, then adjust which ambient controller has priority.
Windows associates background-controller settings with both a device and its connection port. If you unplug a USB device and connect it to a different port, Windows may show it as a different device, so its controller settings may not carry over as expected.

What to expect across brands
A shared Windows setting does not guarantee perfectly identical output from every device. Microsoft notes that color and brightness can vary slightly between manufacturers. Differences in how the hardware renders a selected effect or color may therefore remain even when the same Windows control is applied.
