Start with the published target for your resolution

The Coalition’s requirements, reported by PC Gamer in 2026, pair each resolution and preset with DLSS, FSR, TSR, or XeSS. Treat these as targets rather than promises: native rendering and upscaled rendering are different workloads, and actual results can vary by scene and system.

The requirements state that a hardware ray-tracing-capable graphics card is required; older cards without dedicated hardware ray tracing are not supported. The listed storage is an SSD requirement, not a specific demand for NVMe or a 1 TB drive.

Find a smoother setting without making the image needlessly soft

1. Choose the output resolution first. Use your display’s resolution and your actual GPU as the starting point. If your hardware is near the listed tier, begin with its suggested preset and an available upscaler rather than assuming the target applies to native rendering.
2. Record a baseline. Run the in-game benchmark and note average smoothness, dips, and image clarity. Tom’s Hardware found the benchmark useful as an approximation, though its sweeping view was somewhat more demanding than gameplay scenes.
3. Check a representative gameplay scene. Repeat the same route or encounter at the same output resolution. A benchmark result alone may not reflect areas with different CPU or streaming demands.
4. Change one option at a time. Compare preset, upscaler, or upscaling mode separately. Keep the resolution and scene fixed so you can tell whether a change improved frame rate, made dips less noticeable, or reduced clarity.
5. Keep the setting only if the trade-off works on your display. Check fine detail, moving edges, and image stability as well as frame rate. If the result looks too soft, try a less aggressive mode or a higher preset before lowering output resolution.

There is no one best preset or upscaler established for every PC. If performance is already smooth enough, preserving image quality may matter more than chasing a higher displayed frame rate.

Choose an upscaler supported by your hardware

The Coalition’s July 14, 2026 PC announcement lists NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 with Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and Super Resolution, AMD FSR, Unreal Engine TSR, and Intel XeSS for the Unreal Engine 5, DirectX 12 game. Upscaling renders internally below the display’s output resolution and reconstructs the image, which can improve performance; more aggressive modes can sacrifice detail or clarity. The announcement establishes support for these technologies, not a universal image-quality or speed winner. Availability and labels can change with patches and drivers.

Understand frame generation and responsiveness separately

Frame generation can raise the number of frames displayed, but that number alone does not prove that controls respond as quickly as they would at the same base rendering rate. NVIDIA Reflex is a latency-related feature named in the announcement, but no specific latency improvement is established here. Judge responsiveness in play as well as the frame counter.

Tom’s Guide reported one reviewer’s results on a Ryzen 7 9700X, GeForce RTX 5070, and 32 GB of RAM: roughly 50 FPS at 4K High without the cited DLSS boosts, then roughly 115 FPS after enabling DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Frame Generation and Dynamic Upscaling Quality while increasing ray-traced settings. The reviewer also reported dips in a semi-open area and occasional pop-in, and smoother play at 1440p with Performance upscaling. Do not enable Low Core Mode by default

Low Core Mode is not a general-purpose FPS switch. In Tom’s Hardware’s CPU testing, which used an RTX 5090 at 1080p to examine CPU scaling, enabling it reduced performance across its 25-CPU test pool and did not improve 1% lows. The exception was a deliberately constrained dual-core experiment: the mode helped resolve asset-streaming problems and long pause-menu hangs, and performance rose from 36 FPS to 47 FPS versus that same constrained setup. Know when hardware or troubleshooting is the next step

If your GPU is below the target

First test the appropriate preset and supported upscaling modes using the repeatable method above. Consider a graphics-card upgrade only if your card lacks required hardware ray tracing or cannot deliver acceptable results after those adjustments. The requirements provide tier-specific GPU examples, but they do not establish that any one upgrade is necessary for every player.

If you use an Intel Arc A580 or B580

An official beta-era FAQ advised Arc A580 and B580 users with unexpectedly poor performance to check ReBAR and Above 4G Decoding in BIOS. Because that advice concerns beta software, its applicability to the October 6, 2026 launch build is not established. The FAQ is available at the Gears of War support site; verify that the current article and launch-build guidance apply before changing BIOS settings.

If you are short on installation space

Free at least 115 GB on an SSD to meet the published storage requirement. The specification does not require a particular SSD interface or 1 TB capacity; additional drive capacity is relevant only if you need space for this and other games.

Check for launch-era changes

The technology announcement was published July 14, 2026, and PC Gamer reported the expanded requirements on October 1, ahead of the stated October 6 launch. Game patches, graphics drivers, settings labels, and Advanced Shader Delivery availability can change. The Coalition described Advanced Shader Delivery for compatible systems and supported PC storefronts including Microsoft Store and Xbox PC app, with broader support expanding over time; current storefront support should be checked rather than assumed. The announcement’s exact description of the game’s aims was: “Gears of War: E-Day is being built to deliver a cinematic, visceral, and technically ambitious return to the origins of the franchise,” said Mike Perzel, Rendering Lead at The Coalition.
