To stop a storefront hero image cropping out a product or text, first identify whether the problem comes from the platform’s safe area, the hero section’s shape or focal point, or a desktop image being reused on mobile. Keep essential content inside the visible area, adjust the section crop or focal point, and use a separate mobile crop when one composition cannot work at both sizes.
Find where the crop is coming from
Start with the published page at the screen size where the problem appears. Note whether the product or text is cut off at the sides, covered by an interface element, or clipped because the hero container is too short.

- Identify the platform, theme, and specific hero or banner section.
- Check whether the source image itself cuts off the subject, or whether the clipping appears only after the storefront displays it.
- Compare desktop and mobile. If only one size has the problem, look first for responsive crop, section, or safe-area settings.
An Amazon Store header, an Amazon ad creative, and a Shopify theme hero do not necessarily use the same dimensions or crop rules. Use the instructions for the exact placement rather than applying one platform’s banner settings to another.

Keep essential content within the platform’s safe area
Amazon Store headers
Amazon Ads’ Stores creative guidelines describe a central safe zone and say that up to 30% of the hero image may be cropped, including 15% from each side. Keep the complete product, logo, and any text embedded in the image within that central area; do not rely on the outer edges of a desktop composition being visible on a phone.
A legacy Amazon Stores Help page specifies a minimum hero image size of 3000×600 and says that, on screens narrower than 1500px, up to 16% from each side may be cropped. It also warns that the brand logo can cover more of the image on the left on small screens. These descriptions differ from the current Amazon Ads guidance; do not combine them into a single crop formula. Check the requirements shown in the live Store editor for the specific placement.

Other storefronts
Use the theme’s preview and any safe-area guidance provided for that section. Move important content away from edges that could be clipped by a cover crop or covered by overlays. There is no universal hero-image pixel size that guarantees the same result across platforms and themes.
Check the hero section’s shape and focal point
On Shopify, compare the source image’s aspect ratio with the displayed hero section. The Shopify Help Center explains that the correct aspect ratio affects how images display and documents crop, resize, and focal-point controls in the theme workflow: Uploading images.

If a fixed-height container uses object-fit: cover, the browser crops part of the image to fill the container. Use the theme editor’s crop or focal-point controls to keep the subject in view. If the section is simply too shallow or wide for the image, change its shape or choose a crop designed for that shape. Shopify’s guidance on preventing image layout shift covers dimensions, aspect ratios, and image fitting.
Use a separate mobile composition when needed
A wide desktop composition may not fit a narrow or taller mobile hero: the product, headline, and call to action may need different placement rather than just a tighter crop. Shopify recommends responsive art direction for cases like this, using a landscape desktop image and a portrait or differently composed mobile image. Its guide to the <picture> element for separate mobile and desktop images explains that implementation pattern.

Use supported theme settings for separate desktop and mobile images if they are available. Custom code may be appropriate if the theme cannot produce the required composition; avoid duplicating desktop and mobile image markup without considering its effects. Changing a crop should not make the page jump as the image loads. Set image dimensions or an aspect ratio so the page can reserve the intended space; Shopify documents both approaches and describes how to inspect layout shifts with browser developer tools in its image layout shift guidance.

- Preview the page at the desktop and mobile widths where customers will see it.
- Check that the full product is visible and text is neither clipped nor obscured.
- Confirm that the hero height still suits the page and that the image load does not cause visible movement.
Amazon ad custom images have their own templates and device-specific crop and scaling behavior; an Amazon Store hero safe area should not be assumed to apply to every ad format. See Amazon Ads’ eCommerce display creative specifications for that separate context.
