WinDirStat is an open-source Windows disk-usage analyzer and cleanup utility. Its interface presents folder and file usage visually, including an interactive treemap, and helps users locate unusually large files. The project’s current builds also describe large-file discovery, duplicate detection, and file-system monitoring. The 1.1.2 installer is the classic 1.x setup program; it is separate from source archives and from the newer distribution formats used by current releases.

Why the age of 1.1.2 matters
A 2007 installer was built for an older Windows software and security environment. Even if the original file is unmodified, modern Windows may treat it as an old or weakly recognized executable, and a contemporary installation may be better served by a maintained package. The age of the release does not by itself prove that the file is malicious, nor does it guarantee that it will install correctly on your edition of Windows.
Is windirstat1_1_2_setup.exe safe?
Safety depends on provenance and integrity. A copy obtained from the official WinDirStat archive or a project-controlled release channel is a materially different risk from a file copied to an unknown download portal. Safer download choices
- Use the official WinDirStat archive or a project-controlled release link.
- Use the Microsoft Store listing, a package manager listed by the project, or an official release asset when you want a current build.
- Avoid portals that rename installers, wrap them in download managers, add unrelated offers, or provide no clear project provenance.
- Do not disable Windows Security merely to run a file from an unknown source.
How to check the copy before running it
- Confirm the source. In your browser’s download history, identify the page that supplied the file. If you cannot connect it to the official WinDirStat project, delete the copy and obtain a new one from an official channel.
- Check the filename and size. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and confirm that the name is exactly
windirstat1_1_2_setup.exe. The archived 1.1.2 installer is listed as 630.6 KB. A different size is not automatically proof of tampering—compression, repackaging, or a different release can change it—but it requires an explanation before execution. - Review the Properties details. Look at the Digital Signatures tab if it is present and inspect the publisher information under the file’s details. Why the installer may fail on Windows
Incomplete or damaged download
A browser interruption, storage error, or partial transfer can leave an EXE that is too short or internally corrupt. The installer may fail immediately, display a generic setup error, or close without creating a program folder.
Unofficial or modified copy
A mirror may have altered the executable, wrapped it in another installer, or supplied an outdated build. Security software can block such files, and running them creates an avoidable security risk even if installation appears to succeed.
Windows security blocking an old executable
Windows can warn about an installer that lacks a recognized publisher, has an unusual reputation, or was downloaded from the internet. SmartScreen and antivirus quarantine are protective responses; they are not evidence that every WinDirStat release is malicious.

Permissions and protected destinations
Installing under a protected location such as a system program directory requires elevation. A standard account may be able to approve User Account Control (UAC) with an administrator’s credentials, while a managed work computer may impose additional policy restrictions.

Modern-Windows compatibility
Version 1.1.2 dates from 2007. Current Windows releases, security policies, processor architectures, and installer expectations are different. The old setup program can therefore fail even when the original archive is authentic.
Locked files or a partial previous installation
If WinDirStat is already running, or if an earlier installation stopped halfway through, setup may report that it cannot open a file for writing. A file in use, a read-only destination, or a protected folder can produce the same symptom.
Manual fix sequence
Work through these steps in order. Stop if the file cannot be tied to an official source or if its integrity check fails.
1. Remove the suspect download
Delete the current EXE from the Downloads folder and empty the Recycle Bin if you no longer need it. If Windows Security quarantined it, do not restore it merely to retry. A clean re-download removes uncertainty caused by a partial transfer.

2. Download from an official channel
Obtain 1.1.2 only from the official WinDirStat archive or use a project-controlled release link. The project also lists newer packages through the Microsoft Store, package managers, and its current releases page. Avoid third-party “download” buttons that obscure the real source.
3. Verify the file locally
Open Properties and check the exact filename, file details, and any available signature. Calculate the SHA-256 hash with PowerShell if a checksum is published for the selected release. If the value differs, discard the file and download again from an official source; do not run a mismatched copy.
4. Use a local, writable folder
Move the verified installer to a local folder such as your user Downloads folder rather than running it from a network share, removable drive, or cloud-synchronized location that may lock or alter files. Ensure that the destination you selected during setup is writable and has enough free space.

5. Start setup with the appropriate account
Sign in with a standard account that can approve UAC when an administrator is available. If the destination is protected and UAC requests administrator credentials, have an administrator complete the installation. On a managed computer, your organization’s policy may require an administrator or IT approval.

6. Close running WinDirStat processes
Exit WinDirStat before starting setup. If a window is not visible, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, locate a WinDirStat process, and choose End task only after confirming that it is the program you intend to close. Retry setup after the process has ended.
7. Repair a partial installation
If setup previously created a partial installation, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows), locate WinDirStat, and uninstall it if an entry exists. Restart Windows, select a writable installation folder, and run the verified installer again.
8. Respond correctly to security warnings
If Windows Security or another security product blocks the file, keep it blocked until provenance and integrity are established. Do not create a permanent exclusion for an installer from an unknown mirror. If the official checksum matches but a security product still blocks the file, consult the product’s alert details or your administrator rather than weakening protection blindly.

If the authentic 1.1.2 setup program remains incompatible, do not spend repeated attempts forcing it to run. The official download page lists current x64, x86, and ARM64 MSI installers, portable ZIP and 7z archives, checksum files, Microsoft Store distribution, and package-manager commands. Select the package that matches your Windows architecture and installation preference.

For MSI, Store, package-manager, and portable downloads, use the project’s current release information and its published checksums for the exact asset. Architecture matters: x86, x64, and ARM64 packages are not interchangeable choices for every Windows installation.
Fixing an “error opening file for writing” message
- Close every WinDirStat window and confirm that no WinDirStat process remains in Task Manager.
- Uninstall any incomplete WinDirStat entry from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows to release file handles left by the failed setup.
- Move the verified installer to a local folder and choose a destination where your account has write permission.
- Run the installer again with the required UAC approval.

- Do not use a checksum from another release, architecture, or download.
- Do not repeatedly retry a damaged installer after its hash fails to match.
- Do not install a package for the wrong processor architecture when a matching current build is available.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop and replace the installer when its origin cannot be established, its checksum does not match, Windows Security identifies a threat, or the legacy setup fails after you have removed partial files and verified permissions. A current official package is usually a better path than weakening Windows protections or forcing a 2007 installer through modern security controls.
