What Is Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) on a Router?

WPS makes it easier to connect supported devices to Wi-Fi, but button pairing and PIN entry are not equally risky. Learn what WPS does and when to turn it off.

Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a router feature that helps a supported device join your Wi-Fi network without you manually choosing the network and entering its password on that device. The two common methods are pressing a button and entering a PIN. They have different security implications: the PIN method has a documented brute-force weakness, so avoid it and consider turning WPS off when you are not using it.

What Wi-Fi Protected Setup does

WPS is an onboarding feature, not the security mode that encrypts and protects Wi-Fi traffic. It can make it easier to connect devices such as printers and TVs, provided both the router and client support WPS. NETGEAR explains the feature and how to check router support in its WPS overview.

WPS does not replace a strong Wi-Fi security setting. Microsoft recommends WPA3 when both the router and Windows PC support it; WPS availability and supported security modes depend on the devices. See Microsoft’s wireless network setup guidance.

How the two WPS methods differ

Push-button pairing

With push-button configuration (PBC), you start WPS on the router and on the client device. The devices pair during a limited window set by the router. The exact sequence and timing vary by model; consult the router and client instructions. TP-Link’s guide describes the available methods and model-dependent behavior: WPS guidance.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

PIN entry

With PIN pairing, you enter an eight-digit PIN to connect a device. CERT/CC warns that the WPS PIN design reveals whether the first half is correct, while the last digit is a checksum. Its vulnerability note says this reduces the theoretical search to 104 + 103, or 11,000 attempts. That is a description of the reduced PIN search—not a measured time to break a network, and not a claim about every current router. CERT/CC’s note was first published on December 27, 2011, and last updated on May 10, 2012. Read CERT/CC VU#723755.

Is WPS safe to use?

The strongest documented warning applies specifically to PIN authentication. CERT/CC states: “The WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) PIN is susceptible to a brute force attack.” It warns that an attacker within range may recover the Wi-Fi password, change access-point configuration, or cause denial of service. The note’s vendor list is historical, not a current inventory of affected products.

  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Push-button pairing is not the same method as PIN authentication. TP-Link’s June 23, 2026 guidance describes button pairing as lower-risk than PIN pairing and advises disabling WPS when it is not in use. This is vendor guidance, not a universal standards-body requirement. A cautious approach is to avoid PIN pairing and turn WPS off when you do not need it.

How to decide whether to leave WPS enabled

  • If you do not use it: Disable the router’s WPS feature, especially any PIN or router-PIN option.
  • If you need it for a device: Prefer button pairing if the router and client offer it, follow their instructions, and turn WPS off afterward if the router allows it.
  • If you are comparing routers: Prioritize supported Wi-Fi security modes and clear model-specific controls over the mere presence of a WPS button. Check the manual for how pairing windows, lockout, and disabling work.

Router menus and labels vary by manufacturer, model, and firmware. Look for “WPS,” “Wi-Fi Protected Setup,” “Router PIN,” or “External Registrar”; CERT/CC recommends disabling external-registrar functionality. Consult your router’s instructions before changing a setting, since the precise control and its effect are model-specific. TP-Link’s vendor advice is available in its WPS guide.
