To spawn a death effect on the enemy that was just defeated, create a Particle Emitter in that enemy instance’s death event and use the enemy’s X and Y coordinates. Mark that instance as having started its death sequence before creating the emitter; this prevents repeated bursts while the enemy continues to meet the death condition. Then tune the particles to your game and decide how the emitter will be cleaned up.
Choose a starting point for the effect
You can either inspect an existing effect and adapt it, or build a focused emitter in your project. GDevelop’s official Space Shooter visual-effects tutorial demonstrates creating explosion objects from an enemy-death event at the enemy’s X and Y coordinates. GDevelop also describes its particle system as a 2D emitter, with configurable properties such as color, size, speed, and lifetime.

| Build an emitter in your project | Direct control over the death burst using the particle system’s available properties. | You will need to iterate on its appearance and set up the event and cleanup behavior. |
GDevelop Academy also lists a Particle Emitters tutorial covering emitter options and examples. For the quickest practical route, inspect the demo or tutorial example, then adapt the effect to your own enemy art and scene.

Start with a modest burst so you can see where it appears and how it reads. The particle system exposes controls such as color, size, speed, and lifetime; tune them against the actual game background and camera scale.

If you copy an explosion object from the Space Shooter tutorial or another example, include its related image assets in your project. The tutorial’s workflow calls for copying the objects and their assets.
Trigger one burst for the enemy that died
Use your project’s existing health or death condition. Object conditions determine which instances later actions affect, and event actions run in order, so keep the death logic attached to the enemy instance whose health triggered it. A useful per-instance state variable might be named DeathStarted.

The official Space Shooter example uses Enemies.X() and Enemies.Y() as the explosion creation coordinates. Use the equivalent expressions for your enemy object. Those coordinates refer to the object’s position, so check whether its origin matches the visual center you want; adjust the origin or creation coordinates if the art’s center differs.
With multiple enemies, keep the death flag on each enemy instance rather than relying on one global flag. A GDevelop community answer recommends per-instance death state and per-object iteration to avoid one enemy’s death logic repeatedly affecting multiple instances. Treat that as practical guidance and verify the behavior in your project. If only one of several enemies gets an effect, inspect event order and object picking with the GDevelop events documentation.

Shape the burst to fit your game
There is no universal set of “pro” particle values: the cited GDevelop material identifies controls, not a best numeric preset. Change one property at a time and judge the result in the scene where players will see it.
- Color: choose a hue that stands out against the background and fits the damage style of your game.
- Size: check readability at the game’s actual camera scale rather than only in the editor.
- Speed and direction: use the emitter’s movement settings to distinguish a sharp outward burst from a softer poof or directional breakup.
- Lifetime: give particles enough time to read, while avoiding long-lived effects that can obscure repeated combat.
Decide when the enemy and emitter disappear
Choose whether the enemy vanishes immediately, remains briefly as a corpse, or is removed after the death sequence. If the enemy is deleted while particles are still playing, make sure the effect can continue independently rather than being cut off with its source object.
Emitter cleanup also needs an explicit plan. A community discussion suggests either limiting the emitter to a finite particle supply and using a delete-when-empty behavior, or removing it with a timer. Check the options and labels in your installed GDevelop version, then test that cleanup does not truncate a trail or leave an emitter behind.

Preview and troubleshoot the result
Test the effect in the actual scene, not only in isolation. Check the following cases:
- One enemy dies: the burst appears at that enemy, not at a fixed scene coordinate.
- Enemies die close together: each affected enemy gets its own burst.
- An enemy dies at different positions: the emitter follows the correct instance coordinates.
- The last particles finish: the emitter is removed according to the cleanup behavior you chose.
If the burst repeats, make sure the per-instance death state is set before the emitter-creation action and that the death event no longer matches once the state is set. If the effect appears on the wrong enemy or only one enemy receives it, check which instances the event conditions have selected and whether your logic handles each instance. These steps establish a workflow, not a measured performance result; particle cost and suitable counts depend on the project.
