A Google Cloud TPU is a Google-designed machine-learning accelerator that you rent as cloud computing capacity. Its custom chips are built to speed up matrix-heavy workloads such as neural-network training and inference; they are not retail chips you install in your own computer.
What “TPU” means in Google Cloud
TPU stands for Tensor Processing Unit. Google describes TPUs as custom-developed application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for accelerating machine-learning workloads. In Google Cloud, the term usually means access to that hardware as a provisioned compute resource, commonly through a TPU virtual machine (VM).

A TPU VM is a Linux virtual machine with access to an underlying TPU device. For larger jobs, multiple TPU VMs can work together across a TPU slice. Cloud TPU is therefore both a specialized accelerator and a cloud service for provisioning and running workloads on it.
How a Cloud TPU works
Matrix-focused chip design
Neural networks perform many matrix operations. A TPU chip contains one or more TensorCores, each with matrix-multiply units (MXUs), a vector unit, and a scalar unit. The MXUs do much of the matrix computation using systolic arrays: multiply-accumulate units pass intermediate results to neighboring units, reducing the need to repeatedly fetch those intermediate values from memory.

The exact architecture depends on the generation. Google’s architecture documentation describes 256 × 256 arrays for TPU v6e and TPU7x, and 128 × 128 arrays for earlier TPU versions. These are generation-specific specifications, not a universal description of every TPU.
Scaling beyond one chip
Google connects TPU chips into slices and larger TPU Pods over specialized interconnects. A slice’s topology is the physical arrangement of its chips and links; available configurations vary by generation. Distributed workloads can use multiple TPU VMs across a slice, but moving to a different configuration size may call for substantial tuning. The same program is not guaranteed to perform equally well simply because it runs on a larger configuration.

Frameworks and compilation
JAX and PyTorch support TPU workloads, with compilation through XLA. Whether a model runs efficiently depends not only on the framework but also on the model structure, tensor dimensions, input pipeline, compiler behavior, and TPU topology.
When a TPU is a good fit—and when it is not
Google identifies matrix-dominated machine-learning work as a natural fit, particularly large models with large effective batch sizes, long training runs, and some very large embedding workloads. Specialized hardware alone, however, does not establish that a TPU will be faster or cheaper than another option for a particular job.

Google cautions that Cloud TPU is not suited to workloads with frequent branching, many element-wise algebra operations, high-precision arithmetic, or custom operations inside the main training loop. Those characteristics can make it harder to use the TPU’s matrix-processing strengths effectively.
For a practical decision, check the whole workload rather than the accelerator name:

- Can the model and its operations run efficiently with the framework and compiler path you plan to use?
- Do its tensor dimensions and effective batch size suit the TPU configuration being considered?
- Does the input pipeline keep the accelerator supplied with data?
- Can the job use the chosen slice topology without disproportionate tuning?
- How do end-to-end performance and total cost compare with alternatives at the actual deployment size?
There is no universal TPU-versus-GPU winner established by the product documentation. A workload-specific measurement is the relevant comparison; compatibility, numeric precision, scale-out needs, availability, and cost all affect the result.
How you access Cloud TPU
Google documents TPU access through Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), and Vertex AI. Compute Engine can provision individual TPU VMs or managed instance groups. Independent hosts can suit separate workloads; a multi-host TPU slice is for a workload distributed across cooperating hosts.

Provisioning depends on the TPU generation. You need to choose a supported accelerator type and size, a location where it is available, and a compatible software runtime. Google says the legacy Cloud TPU API is no longer under active development and recommends current Compute Engine or GKE approaches for relevant generations. Older TPU v2 and v3 documentation has additional lifecycle cautions. Check the current, generation-specific setup guide before following commands or selecting a management interface; support is not identical across every generation.

Cloud TPU capacity can be offered through on-demand, Spot, Flex-start, and reservation options. The choice depends on how much interruption the job can tolerate, how long capacity is needed, and how certain the capacity must be. Spot capacity can be preempted; Flex-start is intended for capacity obtained as needed for a limited duration; reservations are for planned capacity needs. Supported TPU versions differ by option, and the project needs the relevant TPU quota.
Availability is also location-specific. Check supported zones for the chosen accelerator type and current capacity before planning a deployment. Neither a listed zone nor a quota alone guarantees that the desired capacity will be obtainable when needed.
Prices vary by product, deployment model, and region. Google’s pricing page lists per-chip-hour rates, while console billing and usage may appear in VM-hours; a single VM can contain multiple chips. Use the live Cloud TPU pricing page or Google Cloud pricing calculator for the intended configuration rather than treating one rate as universal.
Quick Recap
What to check before choosing one
- Match the workload. Identify its dominant operations, precision needs, model and batch dimensions, and any custom operations or frequent branching.
- Verify software and generation support. Confirm the current framework, runtime, management path, and lifecycle guidance for the specific TPU version.
- Check topology and location. Choose a configuration that fits whether the job runs on one host or spans a slice, then verify supported zones and live capacity.
- Confirm quota and capacity mode. Make sure the project has the required quota and select on-demand, Spot, Flex-start, or a reservation based on interruption tolerance and planning needs.
- Estimate and measure the real deployment. Calculate cost using the actual chip count, VM configuration, region, and expected runtime, then compare end-to-end results with alternatives on the same workload.
