What is Warhammer 40,000?
Warhammer 40,000 is a shared setting and a tabletop strategy game created and published by Games Workshop. Official descriptions place it in “the grim darkness of the far future,” where humanity fights spectacular battles across the galaxy to defend its place among the stars. The game represents those conflicts with assembled and painted miniatures, terrain, dice, measuring tools and mission objectives.
As fiction, 40K is a vast science-fantasy setting rather than one continuous novel series. Its stories can focus on a regiment of ordinary soldiers, genetically engineered Space Marines, alien civilizations, rebels, daemons or civilians caught in a war zone. The scale ranges from a squad clearing a ruined building to battles that decide the fate of entire worlds.

The setting is intentionally bleak. Survival often requires authoritarian institutions, extreme violence and morally compromised choices. The Imperium of Man is humanity’s defensive civilization, not an uncomplicated “good” side. Alien factions and Chaos have their own motives, cultures and internal conflicts, so a story’s viewpoint determines what seems heroic, tragic or absurd.
How the tabletop hobby works
Games Workshop presents three connected activities as the core of the hobby:
- Building: assembling plastic miniature kits, removing mould lines and preparing models for the table.
- Painting: applying primer, base colours, shades, highlights and details; a fully finished army is optional.
- Playing: moving models on terrain, rolling dice, resolving attacks and completing mission objectives.
A typical game uses two armies and a battlefield marked with scenery. Each player selects a force under the current rules, deploys units, takes turns performing actions and scores points for objectives. The free Core Rules explain the turn sequence, movement, shooting, charging, combat, morale-related procedures and mission structure. Faction rules add the distinctive abilities and unit data for each army.

You can enjoy one pillar without the others. Someone who likes lore can read novels and setting guides without buying miniatures. A painter can work on individual models without learning competitive rules. A player may use unpainted miniatures while learning. Starter products and introductory games are designed to make these paths overlap gradually.
The setting in one mental model
Think of 40K as a galaxy of competing viewpoints, not a linear campaign with a single protagonist. The Imperium is beset by predatory aliens, insidious heretics and warp-spawned daemons. The “warp” is a dangerous dimension used for faster-than-light travel and psychic power; it is also the source of Chaos, whose entities and followers seek corruption, power or destruction.
History stretches across thousands of years, including the civil war known as the Horus Heresy and the later Great Rift, a galaxy-spanning tear that divided Imperial space and intensified existing crises. These events matter, but you do not need to memorize a chronology before reading a faction-focused story. Most novels supply the local context needed for their own plot.
The Imperium of Man
The Imperium is a huge, bureaucratic human state trying to preserve scattered worlds. It relies on dogma, military force and institutions that are often brutal or inefficient. Its soldiers may fight because of duty, faith, fear or simple survival. Stories set inside the Imperium can therefore read as military action, tragedy, political horror or dark satire.

Space Marines
Space Marines are genetically enhanced warrior-monks created for humanity’s wars. They are durable, heavily armed and usually organized into specialized Chapters. Their iconic armour makes them the most recognizable entry point to 40K, and their armies generally use fewer, tougher models than mass-infantry forces. Official introductory guidance characterizes them as adaptable and forgiving for newcomers.
The Astra Militarum
The Astra Militarum represents ordinary human soldiers, supported by tanks, artillery and aircraft. A single guardsman is far less powerful than a Space Marine, but regiments fight in enormous numbers and rely on combined arms. This viewpoint emphasizes the scale of the setting: frightened people with rifles may be asked to hold a line against monsters, machines or supernatural armies.
Chaos Space Marines and other Chaos forces
Chaos Space Marines are corrupted superhuman warriors descended from the betrayal that triggered the Horus Heresy roughly ten thousand years before the Great Rift. Chaos stories explore rebellion, obsession, possession and the cost of power. Other Chaos forces include daemons and mortal cultists, allowing fiction and armies to range from elite traitors to unstable supernatural hordes.
Orks
Orks are a major alien power whose culture is built around conflict, momentum and collective enthusiasm. Their stories can be violent and surprisingly comic, with ramshackle technology that works because Orks believe it should. On the tabletop, Ork forces commonly appeal to players who want aggressive movement, large units, monsters and vehicles.
Aeldari and other alien factions
The Aeldari are an ancient, highly advanced species whose surviving populations face extinction and political fragmentation. Their fiction offers a perspective very different from Imperial human survival. The wider setting also includes many other factions, each with its own history, visual identity and approach to war. Games Workshop’s 2026 Core Rules describe more than two dozen factions.
Why there is no single “main story”
40K continuity is broad and deliberately decentralized. One series may follow a Space Marine Captain; another may remain with a tank crew, an inquisitor, an alien commander or a civilian hive city. Events can be revisited from opposing viewpoints, and a faction’s codex or primer may emphasize a different part of its history than a novel does.
That structure removes the pressure to begin at an imagined “chapter one.” Pick a subject that gives you a reason to care: a regiment defending a doomed world, a Chapter investigating a cult, a Chaos warband pursuing revenge, an Ork invasion or an Aeldari attempt to avert catastrophe. A character-led entry is usually easier than starting with a galaxy-wide timeline.

Where should a beginner start?
Start with an overview
Read an official setting explainer or the lore sections of the current Core Rules. This gives you the vocabulary—Imperium, Chaos, warp, Space Marines and the major alien powers—without requiring a purchase of miniatures. Treat edition-specific rules as changeable, while broad setting history is comparatively stable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a faction viewpoint
Use your interests to narrow the field:
| If you want… | Try this viewpoint | What it emphasizes |
|---|---|---|
| Recognizable heroes and a compact army | Space Marines | Elite warriors, adaptable units and a lower model count |
| Ordinary people and massed warfare | Astra Militarum | Infantry, tanks, artillery and human vulnerability |
| A villainous mirror of humanity | Chaos Space Marines | Corruption, rebellion, daemons and betrayal |
| Fast, loud, comic brutality | Orks | Large mobs, aggressive attacks and improvised technology |
| An ancient alien civilization | Aeldari | Long memory, specialized forces and existential survival |
This is a reading and hobby decision, not a permanent commitment. You can read about one faction and later collect another.
Follow one character or series
Black Library publishes Warhammer 40,000 novels and anthologies. A character-led novel is a practical first book because it explains institutions and threats through events rather than an encyclopedia entry. There is no universally correct reading order; series differ in era, tone and faction focus. When a book references an unfamiliar historical event, continue unless that detail is central to the plot, then consult an official primer.
Use a lore reference
Warhammer 40,000: The Ultimate Guide is an official lore-and-miniatures reference written by Black Library authors Guy Haley and Gav Thorpe. It is suited to readers who want a broad orientation before choosing a faction or novel, rather than a single protagonist’s story.
Do you need to play the tabletop game to understand the story?
No. The novels, setting guides and faction material stand on their own. Knowing the game can make terms such as unit, battlefield role or objective familiar, but it is not a prerequisite for following a plot. Conversely, playing a small game can make the setting’s logistics—deployment, terrain, ranged fire and close combat—more intuitive for a reader who prefers systems to exposition.
The same distinction applies to painting. Miniatures are physical representations of the setting, not admission tickets. You can read for months before purchasing anything, or begin by painting one model and learn the background afterward.
Which faction is best for a beginner?
There is no objectively best faction. The right first army combines a story you want to spend time with, a model range you enjoy looking at and a play style you can practice repeatedly.

Space Marines: the forgiving default
Space Marines are a common first choice because their models are durable in the fiction and on the tabletop, their range offers many unit types and a smaller force is often needed than for mass-infantry armies. Their armour also provides broad painting options: you can use an established Chapter scheme or create your own.
Astra Militarum: massed humans and vehicles
Choose Astra Militarum if the appeal is ordinary soldiers holding the line with tanks and artillery. You will generally assemble and paint more infantry, and managing many models can take longer, but the army expresses the setting’s human scale better than an elite force.

Chaos Space Marines suit readers who prefer renegades, ancient grudges and supernatural corruption. Their visual language includes corrupted armour, daemonic details and warbands with distinct identities. The faction gives you a direct route into the Imperium’s history while questioning its assumptions.
Orks or Aeldari: strong identities beyond humanity
Orks offer exuberant melee, hordes and vehicles with an intentionally rough aesthetic. Aeldari offer an older civilization, specialized units and a more tragic, fate-conscious viewpoint. Both demonstrate why 40K is larger than an Imperial war story.
Use five tests before buying
- Read a short faction overview and ask whether you want more of that viewpoint.
- Look at the complete starter force, not only its flagship model; you will handle every miniature.
- Decide whether you prefer a compact elite army or many infantry models.
- Check whether you enjoy the faction’s likely battlefield approach: shooting, melee, speed, resilience or unusual abilities.
- Confirm that current rules and the available introductory products support the faction in your market.
What should you buy first?
The current Warhammer 40,000 Starter Set
Games Workshop’s current Starter Set is an all-in-one route for two people or for one newcomer who wants both sides available for learning. Its 2026 description lists:
| Included item | Quantity | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Space Marines | One complete Combat Patrol army | Elite human force for learning core mechanics |
| Orks | One complete Combat Patrol army | Alien force with a contrasting style |
| Miniatures | 46 total | Models for both opposing forces |
| Terrain | 15 pieces | Scenery for the battlefield |
| Boards | Two double-sided boards | Playing surfaces and layout options |
| Rules | Full Core Rulebook, Starter Set Handbook and reference sheets | Game procedures and beginner guidance |
| Accessories | Dice and rulers | Measuring and resolving actions |
Games Workshop lists these contents for 2026. Availability and contents can vary by market, so check the live official product listing before purchasing. The set is most useful if you want models, terrain, rules and two opposing forces in one package. It is unnecessary if your only goal is reading the fiction.
Paints and tools
The separate official Paints + Tools Set contains one brush, clippers, a mouldline remover and 13 Warhammer Colour paints, according to its 2026 description. It is a task-enabling kit for assembling and painting models you already own or obtain in an introductory box. It does not replace miniatures, rules or terrain.

If you are uncertain about the hobby, start with a small number of models rather than buying a full army immediately. Learn to assemble and paint them, then decide whether you want more units. Keep sprue cutters, hobby blades and paints away from children and follow the safety instructions supplied with the tools.
A practical first-game route
- Choose a small force. Use a Combat Patrol or another introductory format rather than building a large collection immediately.
- Read the mission first. Know how deployment works, what scores points and when the game ends.
- Learn only the core turn sequence. Practice movement, shooting, charges and close combat before adding every special rule.
- Use terrain. Scenery affects lines of sight, movement and survival; a bare table teaches the wrong habits.
- Play a short mission. The objective is to understand decisions, not to test a fully optimized army list.
- Review after the game. Note which units you enjoyed using and which rules caused confusion, then consult the relevant reference sheet.
A first game can be played with unpainted models. Painting improves presentation and ownership, but it should not delay learning the rules or enjoying the setting.
What changes between editions and dates?
Rules, points values, faction datasheets, starter-box contents and prices are edition-sensitive. A tactical recommendation that is accurate in one rules release may change after an update. The 2026 figures above—46 miniatures, 15 terrain pieces, 13 paints and more than two dozen factions in the Core Rules—are dated descriptions, not permanent specifications.
Recommended Free Tools
Separate stable background from volatile game information. The broad identities of the Imperium, Chaos, Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks and Aeldari are useful for choosing a story. Exact unit abilities, army construction limits and competitive balance require the current official rules and faction documents.
Common beginner mistakes
- Waiting for a complete timeline: start with a local story instead of trying to master ten thousand years first.
- Assuming the Imperium is heroic by default: its survival role does not erase its authoritarian and violent practices.
- Buying an army before choosing a viewpoint: read a faction primer and handle a sample model first.
- Confusing a novel with a rules manual: fiction explores character and atmosphere; the Core Rules explain how games function.
- Using old rules as current advice: verify edition, date and region for any tactical or product claim.
- Believing painting is mandatory before playing: learn with assembled or even temporary models if that keeps the barrier low.
A simple decision guide
If you want story only: read an official overview, select a faction viewpoint and begin a character-led Black Library novel or The Ultimate Guide.
If you want to paint: obtain a small model or introductory force and pair it with the Paints + Tools Set if you need basic equipment.
If you want to play quickly: the current Starter Set supplies Space Marines, Orks, terrain, boards, dice, rulers and beginner rules in one dated 2026 package.
