It creates an impression of space; it does not add actual speakers around the room. The result depends on the processing, playback device, setup and listener.
How is virtual surround different from conventional surround sound?
In a conventional discrete surround system, multiple audio channels play through separate speakers placed at different positions around the listener. Those physical locations help create the impression that sounds are coming from different directions. Dolby’s overview of surround sound describes cues including timing, level balance, timbre, perceived position and room acoustics.

Virtual surround uses audio processing to imitate some of those directional cues with fewer playback devices. A soundbar might use its built-in speakers, while headphone virtualization processes sound for left and right drivers. The apparent locations are perceptual effects, not physical sources.
How does virtual surround sound work?
With headphones
Ordinary stereo headphones send sound to a driver next to each ear, so the sound image can seem close to the head. Virtualization processes the audio to add spatial cues. Microsoft describes headphone processing based on head-related transfer function (HRTF) characteristics, including differences in response at the near and far ears and interaural delay—the difference in the time a sound reaches each ear. The brain uses such cues to interpret direction and a sense of acoustic space. Microsoft’s Windows documentation explains that virtualized headphone surround can help listeners distinguish front from back as well as left from right.

- Hear Enemies From All Sides. DTS Headphone:X 2.0 surround sound(1) lets you hear enemies sneaking behind you, special ability cues, and immersive environments. It’s positional clarity that can make the difference between victory and defeat. Experience three-dimensional audio that goes beyond 7.1 channels to make you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. (1) DTS Headphone:X 2.0 requires Logitech G HUB Software.
- Be Heard Loud and Clear. The big 6 mm boom mic makes sure you’re heard by gaming partners and mutes when flipped up.
- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
Virtual surround is a processing feature, not a requirement for a particular kind of headset: compatible software or hardware can process audio for stereo headphones. Check the device and platform specifications to confirm that a particular feature works with your setup.
With soundbars and other speakers
Soundbar techniques vary by product. Dolby’s technical paper on Dolby Atmos soundbar applications describes HRTFs and cross-talk cancellation as ways to approximate at the listener’s ears cues associated with surround speakers. It also describes filters that simulate spectral cues for overhead sounds; in some implementations, height elements are processed and mixed through listener-level speakers.

Room layout matters when a system depends on reflected sound. Side-firing effects rely on reflections from walls, while up-firing effects need a clear path to the ceiling. Dolby advises against placing a soundbar where a cabinet or soffit obstructs its up-firing drivers. These techniques can suggest rear or overhead sound, but they do not guarantee that every listener will perceive precise positions.
What does “virtual surround” mean on a soundbar?
It means the soundbar processes audio to suggest a wider or more directional sound field than its physical speaker layout alone would create. The label does not establish which processing method a product uses, which signals it accepts or how convincing the effect will be in a particular room.

DTS describes DTS Virtual:X as a feature for soundbars, TV speakers and AV receivers that can provide a virtual surround experience with as few as two speakers. That is a vendor description of a named technology, not a guarantee that every compatible device produces the same result. Support and settings are product-specific; check the device’s current specifications and setup instructions.

| Consideration | Virtual surround | Discrete surround |
|---|---|---|
| Physical setup | Uses processing with fewer devices, such as a soundbar or headphones. | Uses separate speakers positioned around the listening area. |
| How direction is suggested | Simulates spatial cues; the apparent source locations are not additional speakers. | Physical speaker positions contribute directly to the directional effect. |
| Room and placement | Reflections and overhead effects may depend on room geometry and unobstructed speaker paths. | Speaker placement around the listening position is part of the setup. |
| Listener experience | Perception can vary with the processing system, setup and listener. | The physical layout is different, but the experience still depends on the room and listener. |
Virtualization can suit a space where placing rear or ceiling speakers is impractical. Discrete surround uses speakers at actual positions around the listening area. Neither the “virtual surround” label nor a format name alone tells you whether a specific device accepts a given signal or supports a feature on your platform.
What to check before using a virtual surround feature
- Device compatibility: Confirm the feature works with your soundbar, TV, receiver, headphones and playback platform. DTS notes that its Headphone:X integrations are configured with partners; Microsoft’s cited documentation covers headphone virtualization in Windows.
- Room placement: For a soundbar, avoid blocking up-firing drivers and consider whether walls can provide useful reflections for side-firing effects.
- Realistic expectations: Treat rear and overhead positioning as intended impressions, not guaranteed results. Dolby notes flexibility in soundbar implementations, and the perceived effect can differ among listeners.
- Feature details: Check the manufacturer’s instructions for supported formats, settings and connection requirements instead of assuming that all products using similar terminology work alike.
Virtual surround is best understood as a way to create spatial audio impressions from a limited speaker arrangement or headphones. Its specific method and effect vary by implementation; Dolby, DTS and Microsoft describe their respective technologies, but those descriptions are not independent comparative listening tests.
