Mastering a Sprite in Fortnite permanently marks it as mastered on your account, unlocks Sprite Mastery Rewards, makes it eligible for display in a Sprite Pod back bling, and reduces its Sprite Dust resummon cost by 50%, according to Epic’s v42.10 notes. It does not preserve the Sprite’s level: that can reset after you lose it, while its mastered status remains.
What mastery changes permanently
Mastery is persistent account progress, not a guarantee that a Sprite stays powered up from match to match. Epic says a mastered Sprite remains mastered even if its level resets after you lose it. A crown in the Sprite tab indicates that the Sprite is mastered. Epic Games Support explains the level reset and persistent mastery status.

Mastery also unlocks the Sprite Mastery reward track and allows you to display mastered Sprites in a Sprite Pod back bling. Epic’s v42.10 notes add that resummoning a mastered Sprite costs 50% less Sprite Dust. The notes also say the reward track grants rewards and Gizmos. What mastery does not do
Mastery does not lock a Sprite at its current level or stop that level from resetting. Epic Support says a mastered Sprite can return to level 1 after being lost, but its mastered status remains. The crown in the Sprite tab confirms that persistent status; it does not mean the Sprite has kept its level.

How duplicate Sprites contribute to mastery
Epic’s v42.10 notes describe a progression route through duplicate Sprites: extracting a Sprite that is already in your collection gives Sprite XP to its collection copy. Once that copy is maxed, extracting it masters the Sprite.
