It can produce audio plug-in prototypes, but a working demo is not proof that a project is reliable. For audio, generated code still needs to be built and tested in its intended host under realistic playback, buffer, routing, and project-state conditions.
What “vibe coding” means
The term describes an iterative workflow: explain what you want, let an AI system generate code, try the result, and prompt changes. People use the phrase in two ways. Sometimes it means trusting generated code with little inspection; more broadly, it can mean using conversational AI as a coding assistant while a person reviews and tests the result. The less review involved, the less assurance you have that the software behaves correctly.

Google Cloud’s explainer distinguishes loose experimentation from responsible AI-assisted development, where a human checks, understands, and takes responsibility for the code. In a Google interview published October 6, 2025, Google Labs product director Kelly Schaefer likewise distinguishes generating a simple app from taking it to a stage where many people can use it.

Can vibe coding make audio projects?
Yes—small plug-ins and prototypes are a documented use case. Sound On Sound’s January 2026 tutorial, “Vibe Coding: How Anyone Can Create Plug-ins”, demonstrates natural-language code generation using REAPER’s JSFX format.

Cockos documents JSFX as a text-file format for audio and MIDI plug-ins that can be edited or written from scratch. It supports distinct code sections for initialization, slider changes, audio blocks, sample processing, serialization, and graphics. REAPER also provides an integrated environment for composing, debugging, and testing JSFX.
That establishes a practical way to experiment; it does not show that AI can independently deliver a dependable commercial plug-in or a complete production system. The cited sources do not report a measured success rate or reliability benchmark for AI-generated audio projects.

Why audio reliability takes more than a successful build
An audio plug-in runs inside a host and must meet the host and format’s expectations while processing audio predictably. In its VST 3 processing documentation, Steinberg explains that processing happens in blocks whose sizes can vary up to a configured maximum. Input and output buffers may alias, and processing can occur on a real-time audio thread. Steinberg’s threading guidance warns against allocating memory during audio processing.

A design that blocks or allocates in the real-time path can interfere with timely audio processing. Buffer aliasing means code must also handle cases where input and output refer to the same memory, when the format permits it. These requirements are reasons to test, not evidence that a particular AI-generated project will fail.

UI behavior deserves attention too. Cockos notes in its JSFX documentation that graphics code runs in a separate thread from audio processing. Accessing shared variables or memory concurrently can therefore produce unpredictable behavior unless it is handled appropriately.
How to validate a generated plug-in
The following are engineering checks inferred from the host and format requirements above; they are not reported test results for any particular AI tool or plug-in.

- Build and load it in the intended environment. Use the target DAW and plug-in format, then confirm the host recognizes and instantiates the plug-in.
- Try supported audio configurations. Test multiple buffer sizes, sample rates, and channel configurations that the host supports—not just the defaults used during development.
- Exercise the audio path. Check input and output handling, including in-place buffers where the format permits aliasing. Listen and measure for clicks, dropouts, incorrect channel routing, unexpected gain, and unstable output.
- Change the UI during playback. Open or adjust controls while audio is running to expose problems involving interaction between graphics and audio processing.
- Check project behavior. Where relevant, verify parameter changes, automation, and save-and-restore state after closing and reopening the project.
Compilation is only an early check. A plug-in can build and load yet behave incorrectly during playback or when a project is reopened.
A practical first route: REAPER and JSFX
For a small first effect, REAPER plus JSFX is a well-documented starting point: the format is editable as text, and REAPER includes tools to compose, debug, and test it. REAPER supports other plug-in formats as well, but format support does not mean a generated plug-in will work correctly across every host or operating system. - Keep the first project narrow. Choose one utility effect and specify its inputs, outputs, controls, and expected behavior in plain language.
- Ask for an explanation, not just code. Have the coding tool describe the design and identify likely failure cases so you have concrete points to review.
- Add one behavior at a time. Test each change in the host before expanding the effect; this makes regressions easier to isolate.
- Raise the review standard when the stakes rise. For anything beyond a personal experiment, review the code yourself or ask an experienced audio developer to review it, and keep repeatable checks for future changes.
This is a cautious development approach based on documented host and runtime constraints, not a guarantee that a particular prompt or AI system will produce correct code.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The available examples establish that AI-assisted plug-in prototyping is possible and that JSFX offers a concrete place to try it. They do not establish a general reliability rate, a controlled benchmark, or that an AI can autonomously deliver production-ready audio software. Treat each generated result according to what you have actually built, reviewed, and tested.
