Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), an entity regulated by the Reserve Bank of India, it lets a compatible mobile app connect directly to your bank account so you can send money to another person or pay a merchant in real time.
The payment network is UPI; BHIM, PhonePe, Google Pay and other compatible apps are interfaces that use it. You normally choose a recipient or scan a QR code, confirm the amount and payee, then authorize the bank transaction with a private UPI PIN.

What is UPI?
Unified Payments Interface is an instant payment system developed by NPCI and built over the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) infrastructure. It links participating bank accounts to compatible payment applications, allowing account-to-account transfers without requiring the recipient’s full bank details on every transaction.

One-click scans. No signup required.
UPI supports both person-to-person (P2P) payments and person-to-merchant (P2M) payments. Depending on the bank and app, it can also handle collection requests, scheduled mandates, account transfers and QR-based merchant payments. The everyday experience is simple: select a payee or scan a merchant’s QR code, enter an amount and authorize the payment from your bank account.

UPI is a payment rail, not a bank account and not a single app. NPCI operates the system, banks hold and move the funds, and apps provide the user interface. Your bank, the app and the payment-service participants must all support the particular feature you are trying to use.
How does a UPI payment work?
A typical transaction passes through several linked steps. The screens differ between apps and banks, but the underlying sequence is broadly the same.
- Register in a compatible app. Install a UPI-enabled application, verify the mobile number associated with your bank account and link one or more supported accounts. NPCI’s product material describes linking multiple bank accounts within one mobile application.
- Choose the payment route. You can select a saved contact, enter a UPI ID, UPI Number, account number and IFSC, or scan a merchant QR code. The options shown depend on the app and the recipient’s setup.
- Enter and inspect the amount. Type the amount, then check the payee name or merchant details displayed by the app. Do this before authorization: NPCI’s FAQ says a payment cannot be stopped once it has been initiated.
- Authorize with your UPI PIN. Enter the private 4–6 digit UPI PIN that you set when registering or activating the account. This authorizes the bank transaction.
- Read the result. The app displays a success, decline or pending status. Keep the transaction reference if you need help from the bank or app.
The visible confirmation is not a substitute for checking your bank statement when a status is unclear. A successful debit, a pending transaction and a declined transaction can require different support steps.

What is an UPI-PIN?
A UPI-PIN is the 4–6 digit code used to authorize a UPI transaction. You set it during registration or account activation, usually after verifying your debit-card or bank credentials through the app’s setup flow. It is different from an MPIN issued for mobile banking or other bank services.
- Enter the UPI-PIN only inside the trusted payment screen of your bank or payment app.
- Never tell it to another person, including anyone claiming to be from bank or app support.
- A legitimate request to receive money should not require you to disclose your PIN to another person.
- If you believe the PIN has been exposed, use your bank or app’s official controls to change or reset it and review recent transactions.
What happens if I enter wrong UPI-PIN during a transaction?
An incorrect PIN does not authorize that transaction. The app will normally show a failed or declined result and may ask you to try again or use its PIN-reset process. The exact number of attempts, lockout behavior and reset requirements are set by the participating bank and app, so do not keep guessing if the code is rejected. Check the app’s on-screen guidance or contact the bank through an official channel.

Do not confuse a wrong-PIN failure with a payment that was successfully debited but is still marked pending. For the latter, check the transaction status and bank account before attempting another payment, since a second attempt could create a duplicate debit.
What can you use UPI for?
Person-to-person transfers
You can send money to another individual using a supported UPI ID, UPI Number or, where offered, the recipient’s account number and IFSC. Confirm the name shown by the app before entering your PIN, particularly when a contact has more than one payment address.
Merchant payments
At a shop or online checkout, scan the merchant’s QR code or select a UPI option. The app should show the merchant or payee details and amount before authorization. QR payments are commonly used for small in-person purchases, while online merchants may generate a payment request in the checkout flow.
Collection requests and mandates
Some UPI services allow a recipient to send a collect request for you to approve, or allow a scheduled mandate for recurring payments. Treat a collect request as a payment authorization: inspect who is asking, the amount and any schedule before entering your PIN.
Account transfers and other flows
NPCI’s UPI materials also describe account transfers and additional QR-based flows. Availability, limits and the exact confirmation screens vary by bank, app, account type and transaction category.

UPI, BHIM and other payment apps: what is the difference?
UPI is the underlying network and set of operating rules. BHIM is an NPCI UPI application. PhonePe, Google Pay and other participating applications provide their own interfaces while connecting to UPI through banks and payment-service participants.

| UPI | The interoperable payment system that routes account-to-account transactions. | Bank participation, transaction rules, feature availability and operating policies. |
| BHIM | An NPCI-developed app for making UPI payments. | App interface, supported features and the banks available to a particular user. |
| Other UPI apps | Apps from participating providers that connect users and merchants to UPI. | Supported banks, accessibility, QR and mandate features, customer-support process and screen design. |
Because these apps use the same underlying system, the app name alone does not determine whether a payment can be sent to a particular bank account. The relevant questions are whether the bank and account are supported, which features are enabled and how the app handles support and disputes. Available evidence does not establish a universal winner across those factors.
Step-by-step: sending money safely
- Open the payment app and select Send, Pay or the equivalent action. Use the app you registered with your bank account.
- Choose the recipient method. Select a saved contact, enter the recipient’s UPI ID or UPI Number, or use the account-number-and-IFSC option if both sides support it.
- For a merchant, scan the official QR code. Avoid scanning a code supplied by an unexpected message or caller, and wait for the merchant name to appear in the app.
- Enter the amount and review the payee. Compare the displayed name, amount and any note or request description with what you intended to pay.
- Authorize once with your UPI-PIN. Never enter the PIN on a screen opened by a caller, remote-support session or untrusted link.
- Save the result. Note the reference number. If the status is pending, do not immediately repeat the payment; first check the transaction status and your bank balance.
What if a UPI payment is declined, pending or disputed?
Declined payment
NPCI’s FAQ says a declined transaction receives a real-time reversal, with the amount transferred back to the payer account immediately. The app may show the reversal or a failed status. Confirm the balance and transaction history before trying again.
Pending payment
A pending status means the final outcome has not been confirmed in the app at that moment. Use the app’s transaction-status function and your bank statement. Do not assume that every pending transaction resolves instantly; the handling and timing can depend on the bank and the individual case.
Debited but not received or an unfamiliar transaction
Keep the transaction reference, date, amount and payee details. Start with the app’s help or dispute path, then contact the bank through its official website, app or phone number. Never share your UPI-PIN or one-time credentials with a person offering to “reverse” a payment.

UPI safety rules that prevent the most common mistakes
- Check before you authorize. NPCI states that an initiated payment cannot be stopped, so verify the payee and amount before entering the PIN.
- Understand the action on screen. A request to receive money is not automatically a credit. Read whether the app is asking you to approve a payment, a collect request or another action.
- Keep the PIN private. Banks and legitimate support agents do not need you to disclose it.
- Use official support channels. Navigate from the bank or app itself rather than using a phone number or link sent by an unknown person.
- Check the account after an error. A failed-looking screen and a bank debit should be treated as a status issue, not as permission to pay again immediately.
- Secure the phone. Use the device lock, keep the operating system and payment app updated and avoid handing an unlocked phone to someone who is asking you to approve a transaction.
How large is the UPI system?
NPCI’s statistics page lists 24,508.96 million transactions worth ₹29,82,355.95 crore for August 2026. The page notes that same-account debit and credit transactions have been excluded from the reported figures since August 2018. These are monthly system totals, not a guarantee that every bank or user experienced the same availability.
A separate NPCI ecosystem table reports 20,008.31 million total transactions for August 2025, including 7,303.15 million P2P and 12,705.16 million P2M transactions. Because the tables refer to different months and reporting views, the figures should not be combined as if they were a single-period breakdown.
For August 2025, NPCI reports 9,152.54 million transactions attributed to PhonePe and 7,063.76 million attributed to Google Pay. NPCI says app volume is assigned using payer-side payment-service-provider logic and that certain transaction types are excluded from third-party app market-share reporting. Volume indicates reported transaction activity, not app quality, reliability or customer-service performance.

Paying at selected overseas merchants
NPCI describes QR-based UPI payments at selected overseas merchant locations. This is not universal international acceptance. You need an eligible UPI-powered app, a supported bank account and activation of the international service for that account. Before confirming, inspect the amount shown in both foreign and Indian currency and review the applicable conversion rate or fee information.

Does UPI require NFC?
No. Standard UPI payments can use a UPI ID, UPI Number, account details or a QR code and do not generally require an NFC-capable phone.
NFC is relevant to the optional Tap & Pay flow. NPCI describes using an NFC-capable phone or device to capture a payee UPI ID or virtual payment address from an NFC tag or smart QR. When UPI Lite is enabled, NPCI describes special handling for transactions up to ₹500, with a PIN-based flow for other transactions. Feature rules can change, so check the current bank and app instructions before relying on a particular threshold or Tap & Pay behavior.
Limits, fees and availability
There is no single universal schedule in the available official material that covers every UPI limit, fee, account type and use case. Limits can depend on the bank, app, account, merchant category, transaction type and current NPCI or bank policy. Some features may be unavailable even when ordinary send-money payments work.
Before a large or unusual payment, check the limit and fee information displayed by your bank or app. Do not assume that a limit for P2P transfers also applies to P2M payments, mandates, international transactions or UPI Lite. Bank-specific guidance is the authority for your account.
What you need to start using UPI
- A bank account at a participating institution.
- A mobile number that the bank and app can verify for that account, unless your bank explicitly supports an international-number onboarding route.
- A compatible UPI application.
- The credentials required by your bank to link the account and set a UPI-PIN.
- A phone with a secure screen lock and a working data connection for the app’s registration and payment flows.
You do not need to buy a special QR accessory or NFC device for ordinary UPI payments. NFC hardware matters only when you choose a supported Tap & Pay feature.
Common UPI problems and the right response
| Symptom | What it usually means | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong UPI-PIN message | The attempted transaction was not authorized. | Stop guessing, follow the app’s reset guidance and contact the bank through an official channel if needed. |
| Declined with money apparently deducted | The transaction may be in reversal processing or the app may not yet show the final state. | Check the bank balance and transaction status; NPCI describes real-time reversal for declined payments, but case handling can still require bank support. |
| Pending status | The final result has not been confirmed. | Use the status-check option and wait for bank guidance before retrying. |
| Recipient name does not match | The selected UPI address or QR may be wrong. | Cancel before entering the PIN and verify the recipient through a trusted channel. |
| International payment unavailable | The bank, app, account or merchant may not support the international feature. | Check eligibility and activation requirements; do not assume that domestic UPI support includes overseas acceptance. |
UPI in one sentence
UPI is the interoperable NPCI payment system that lets a supported app instruct your participating bank to send money or pay a merchant instantly, with the transaction authorized by your private UPI-PIN.
