On Ethereum, a wallet may replace a pending transaction using the same account nonce and a higher fee. On Bitcoin, a wallet may use Replace-by-Fee (RBF) to submit a conflicting transaction that meets network-node policy. In either case, the original can confirm first. Once a transaction is confirmed, these replacement methods cannot cancel it or retrieve funds sent to the wrong address.
First check whether the transaction is still pending
Open the transaction details in the wallet you used and check its status and network. If the status is unclear, look up the transaction hash in an explorer for that same network. A transaction that is already mined or confirmed is no longer eligible for the pending-transaction replacement methods described here. MyEtherWallet’s guidance distinguishes pending transactions from mined ones and warns that replacement is not guaranteed: MyEtherWallet’s transaction replacement guidance (updated September 10, 2026).

Do not treat “cancel” as a reversal of a completed transfer. It is an attempt to get a different transaction accepted before the original is included in a block. If the original has already confirmed, these methods will not take the funds back or change the destination.

A pending transaction has been signed and broadcast, but it has not yet been included in a confirmed block. It may be sitting in one or more nodes’ mempools because its fee is unattractive under current conditions, because an earlier transaction from the same account is blocking it, or because the wallet has not successfully propagated it. The wallet’s activity screen is useful, but an explorer for the correct chain is the better way to verify whether a transaction hash exists and whether it is confirmed.

Do not submit a replacement merely because the wallet display is slow to refresh. First compare the hash, chain, block status and confirmation count. A replacement can create another fee charge and does not guarantee a faster result.
How Ethereum and Bitcoin replacement differ
The procedure depends on the chain. Ethereum-style wallets identify an account’s transactions by nonce, while Bitcoin RBF works by proposing a transaction that conflicts with an unconfirmed transaction’s inputs. A wallet’s buttons and transaction eligibility also vary, so first confirm which network and wallet sent the transaction.
| Network | How a replacement is identified | What the wallet may let you do | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ethereum and compatible account-based networks | Reuse the pending transaction’s account nonce. | Resubmit the intended transaction with a higher fee, or attempt cancellation with a zero-value transaction to your own address. | Resolve the oldest pending nonce first; a replacement can lose the race to the original. |
| Bitcoin | Submit a conflicting transaction that spends one or more of the same inputs. | Use a wallet’s RBF Speed Up or Cancel option if available for the transaction. | The replacement must satisfy node mempool policy; paying a higher fee alone may not be enough. |
These are different mechanisms, not interchangeable instructions. Ethereum guidance below applies to nonce-based Ethereum transactions; Bitcoin guidance applies to Bitcoin RBF. Wallets may support additional networks, but a button or procedure documented for one chain should not be assumed to work on another.

How to speed up or cancel a pending Ethereum transaction
Ethereum.org describes a transaction as stuck when its gas fee is below current network requirements. Its FAQ says to speed up by resubmitting the same transaction with a higher gas fee, or to attempt a cancellation by sending 0 ETH to your own address with the same nonce. These actions aim to replace the pending transaction; they do not guarantee that the replacement will be mined first. See ethereum.org’s FAQ, last updated June 6, 2026.
A speed-up keeps the original recipient, amount and contract call, but raises the fee fields so validators have more incentive to include it. A cancellation changes the payload to a zero-value transfer back to an address controlled by the sender. The same nonce is the key: only one transaction with that nonce can ultimately be accepted as the account’s next state transition.

Use the wallet’s built-in action when it is available
- Open the sending wallet’s activity or transaction details and confirm that the transaction is pending on the correct network.
- Choose the wallet’s Speed Up option to resubmit the intended transaction with a higher fee, or Cancel if you want to attempt to replace it with a cancellation transaction. Read the wallet’s fee preview before approving.
- Wait for the replacement transaction to be processed, then check its status. Do not assume that clicking Cancel immediately removes the original from the network.
After submission, record the replacement hash if the wallet displays one. Track both hashes until one is mined. If the original is mined first, the same-nonce replacement will generally be rejected as a nonce conflict; if the replacement is mined, the original cannot later execute as a second transaction with that nonce.
Wallet-specific controls have their own limits. For example, Crypto.com Onchain documents its replace-by-fee feature for eligible ETH/ERC-20 sends initiated in its app, but not certain smart-contract flows such as swaps and DeFi Earn deposits or withdrawals. It also advises processing the lowest pending account nonce first. Those are limits of that product’s documented feature, not universal rules for every wallet. Details: Crypto.com Onchain’s replace-by-fee instructions.
If you must set a custom nonce and fee
Manual replacement is an advanced option. MetaMask’s help instructions say to submit a replacement with the same nonce and set fees high enough for it to be prioritized. Its current product guidance recommends a priority fee at least 10% higher than the original and a max fee at least 30% higher. These are MetaMask’s recommendations for its wallet, not fixed Ethereum protocol requirements; network conditions and the wallet’s live fee estimates still matter. Follow the wallet’s current instructions rather than applying those percentages as a guarantee. See MetaMask’s speed-up and cancellation instructions.
Before signing manually, copy the original nonce exactly and verify the destination, value, data field and chain ID. An incorrect nonce can replace the wrong queued transaction; an incorrect chain can send a valid transaction somewhere you did not intend. If the wallet does not expose nonce controls or explain custom fees, using its supported button or waiting for support is safer than guessing.
If several transactions are pending from the same account, begin with the oldest one—the lowest pending nonce. MetaMask warns that a higher nonce cannot be canceled before a lower pending nonce in the queue is handled. Trying to replace a later transaction first may leave it waiting behind the earlier one. Crypto.com Onchain likewise instructs users to process the lowest pending account nonce first. Resolve the queue in order, checking each replacement before moving to the next nonce.

How Bitcoin RBF works
Bitcoin RBF attempts to replace an unconfirmed transaction with a conflicting one, typically by spending one or more of the same inputs. Some wallets offer a Speed Up option to increase the fee for the intended payment, or a Cancel option that creates a replacement sending the funds to an address controlled by the user’s wallet. These are wallet operations on an unconfirmed transaction, not a way to recall a confirmed payment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Whether RBF is possible depends on how the original transaction was created and on the wallet’s implementation. Look for an RBF, Speed Up or Cancel control on the unconfirmed outgoing transaction. If the wallet offers no replacement path, do not assume that importing the transaction into another application will make it replaceable; the replacement still has to be accepted by nodes and propagated to miners.
A replacement must satisfy the node’s current mempool replacement policy. Bitcoin Core documents conditions that include paying at least the sum of the original transactions’ absolute fees, covering incremental relay costs, staying within a bound on distinct conflicting transaction clusters, and strictly improving the mempool feerate diagram. That policy has multiple requirements; simply setting a fee higher than the original does not establish that the replacement will be accepted. Consult the current Bitcoin Core mempool replacement policy and the wallet’s fee preview.
In practical terms, a replacement may need a substantially higher total fee, not merely a higher displayed fee rate, especially when it conflicts with more than one transaction. Node policies can differ, mempools can change, and miners choose which valid transaction to include. A wallet’s successful broadcast only shows that the request was sent; it does not show that the replacement has won.
Wallet interfaces can make RBF easier, but a successful submission is not a promise that miners will select the replacement. Bitcoin.com Wallet warns that the original transaction may confirm before the replacement is processed. Its app-specific steps are documented in Bitcoin.com Wallet’s guide to pending Bitcoin transactions, published November 25, 2024.

A practical decision path
- Verify the status. Check the wallet activity and, if needed, the transaction hash in an explorer for the same chain. If it is confirmed, stop: the pending replacement methods do not apply.
- Identify the network and sending wallet. Ethereum nonce replacement and Bitcoin RBF are distinct. Confirm that the wallet supports the relevant action for this transaction type.
- For Ethereum, check the nonce queue. If more than one transaction is pending, deal with the oldest pending nonce first. Use the wallet’s built-in Speed Up or Cancel action when available; edit a nonce manually only if you understand the wallet’s instructions.
- For Bitcoin, check RBF availability. Use a wallet-provided replacement option only if it is available for the unconfirmed transaction. Review the additional fee and understand that node policy and the race with the original still apply.
- Verify the outcome. Track the replacement itself and wait for its confirmation. A submitted cancellation request is not proof that the original has been canceled.
What to do if the wallet still says pending
Refresh the activity view and compare it with an independent explorer. If neither the original nor replacement appears, the wallet may be showing a locally queued item rather than a propagated transaction. Avoid repeatedly pressing Send, Speed Up or Cancel while the status is uncertain. Multiple attempts can create several signed transactions, competing fees and a more difficult nonce or input history.
If a replacement is broadcast but remains unconfirmed, wait for the network to process it and monitor the fee estimate. For Ethereum, make sure no lower nonce is still blocking it. For Bitcoin, verify that the replacement was accepted under the wallet’s RBF flow rather than merely signed locally. Wallet support can explain product-specific status messages, but no support agent can guarantee that miners or validators will choose a particular transaction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fees, timing, and common mistakes
- Assuming a replacement is an undo: It is an attempt to substitute one unconfirmed transaction for another. If the original confirms first, the attempt may fail or leave you with extra confusion and fees.
- Assuming “higher fee” is a universal rule: Ethereum wallets use fee fields and wallet-specific recommendations; Bitcoin Core replacement policy has several conditions beyond the absolute fee. Review the wallet’s current estimate and instructions.
- Ignoring earlier Ethereum nonces: A later transaction in the account queue may remain blocked until an earlier pending nonce is handled.
- Assuming every transaction type is eligible: Wallet features can exclude certain smart-contract actions or transactions sent through other apps. Check the wallet’s own support page for the relevant transaction type.
- Approving without checking the fee: Replacement generally involves a higher or additional fee. Inspect the amount shown in the wallet before confirming the replacement.
- Expecting instant finality: Broadcasting a replacement does not mine it immediately. Continue checking the replacement hash and wait for the required confirmation status shown by the wallet or explorer.
- Editing the wrong nonce: Manual Ethereum replacement can affect a different queued transaction if the nonce is copied incorrectly. Start with the oldest pending nonce and verify every field.
- Sharing a recovery phrase with someone offering help: Do not disclose your wallet recovery phrase. ethereum.org warns that legitimate services do not ask for a seed phrase in its support FAQ.
When cancellation is not possible
If the transaction is confirmed, the blockchain has accepted that state transition. A same-nonce Ethereum transaction or Bitcoin RBF replacement cannot rewrite it. The same is true when a payment was confirmed to the wrong address, an unintended contract was called, or a token was sent to an unsupported destination. Recovery then depends on the recipient, exchange or application, not on a pending-transaction button.
Even before confirmation, cancellation can be unavailable because the wallet does not support replacement, the transaction type is excluded, the original was not marked or propagated for RBF, or the replacement fails node policy. In those cases, monitor the original and seek help from the wallet’s official support channel without giving anyone control of the seed phrase.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cancel an Ethereum transaction after it is confirmed?
No. The same-nonce replacement method applies only while the transaction is pending. Once mined, it cannot be canceled this way or used to recover funds sent to the wrong address.
Best Value
Does Ethereum Speed Up send the payment again?
It resubmits the same intended transaction with the same nonce and a higher fee. Only one transaction with that nonce can ultimately be accepted, but the original may still confirm first.
What if I have several Ethereum transactions pending?
Handle the oldest pending transaction first. A higher nonce cannot be canceled or replaced ahead of a lower pending nonce in the account queue.
Is MetaMask’s 10% or 30% fee increase required by Ethereum?
No. Those percentages are MetaMask’s current product recommendations: at least 10% higher priority fee and 30% higher max fee. They are not universal protocol constants, and current network conditions still matter.
Can every Bitcoin transaction be sped up with RBF?
No. The wallet must support replacement for that unconfirmed transaction, and the replacement must meet node mempool policy. A higher fee alone does not guarantee acceptance.
Can the original Bitcoin transaction confirm after I press Cancel?
Yes. Bitcoin.com Wallet warns that the original may confirm before the replacement is processed. Track both transactions until one is confirmed.
Will I pay another fee when replacing a transaction?
Usually. Speed-up and cancellation replacements use a higher or additional fee. Review the wallet’s fee preview before signing.
Should I give my seed phrase to someone who says they can unstick my transaction?
No. Legitimate wallet or blockchain support does not need your recovery phrase. Use the wallet’s official support channel and never disclose the phrase.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A pending Ethereum transaction may be replaced with the same nonce, and a pending Bitcoin transaction may be replaced through RBF if the wallet and node policy allow it. Check the chain, status, nonce or RBF eligibility, and fee before signing. Treat Speed Up and Cancel as competitive replacement attempts—not guaranteed reversals—and wait for the replacement itself to confirm. Confirmed transactions cannot be canceled through these methods.
