Cables can contain one or more pairs, and some designs add foil or braid shielding. It is commonly used for Ethernet, but twisted pair is a cable construction—not another name for Ethernet.
How twisted-pair cable works
Each pair consists of two insulated conductors twisted around one another. The twist helps the electrical effects on the conductors cancel, reducing susceptibility to signal degradation and crosstalk. Cable specifications control the twist and other construction details.

A network cable may bundle several pairs. For example, Cisco describes unshielded twisted-pair networking cable with eight insulated copper wires arranged in four pairs. The number of pairs, conductor gauge, impedance, category, jacket, and permitted uses vary by cable design; the term “twisted pair” alone does not establish those details. Cisco’s overview of unshielded twisted-pair cable explains the construction and cancellation effect.

Twisted-pair cable can carry voice, data, and control signals. Ethernet is one common use, particularly for local-area network cabling. However, Ethernet is a family of networking technologies, not a cable type. IEEE 802.3-2022 covers Ethernet physical-layer interfaces using selected media that include twisted pair, coaxial cable, and fiber-optic cable. It also includes power over selected twisted-pair physical-layer types. The IEEE 802.3-2022 standard listing describes the standard’s scope.

For a familiar example, Cisco documents straight-through Cat5 or Cat6 UTP patch cables for connecting an end-user device to a switch. That example does not mean every twisted-pair cable is appropriate for every Ethernet link. Cisco’s Ethernet cabling guidance provides this connection example.
UTP and shielded twisted-pair cable
The pairs may be unshielded or combined with metallic shielding. Shielding is a separate construction choice from twisting, and the exact arrangement matters.

- This unit is dual-use IP Network extender, it can be used by twisted pair wires, it also can be used by Cat5e/6 network cable. Transmission distance: up to 500 meters (1650FT.) through a Cat5e/6 network cable, Up to 300meters(1000FT) through one twisted pair (2 wires).
- Support 720P, 960P,1080P HD Network IP cameras. (Please take note: Not support PoE,The unit at camera side does not power up the camera)
- Compact design, Durable Metal. Bilateral heat dissipation.
- Support plug and play, and no setting of network terminating equipment, including web camera, needs to be changed
- Cost effective, It is simple to construct at a low cost, for full use can be made of the original coaxial cable, power line or telephone line for cabling; moreover, network installation cost can be reduced since communication media, such as Ethernet, needn’t be re-laid
| Construction | What it means | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| UTP | Unshielded twisted pair: the twisted conductors have no metallic shield around the pairs. | Common in Ethernet LAN cabling. Suitability depends on the link and installation environment. |
| Shielded or screened pair | Uses foil, braid, or both around individual pairs, the group of pairs, or both. | May reduce noise in suitable installations, but requires compatible components and correct bonding or grounding. |
Casual use of labels such as “STP” is not always consistent. Check the cable’s actual specification and shield notation rather than relying on a shorthand label. Cisco describes shield arrangements and installation considerations in its UTP and shielded twisted-pair overview.
When shielding helps—and when it can cause trouble
Shielding can help reduce interference in electrically noisy environments, but it is not automatically an upgrade. It adds cost and installation complexity, and its effectiveness depends on proper bonding. Poor grounding or a discontinuity in the shield can undermine its benefit; Cisco warns that an improperly installed shield can behave like an antenna. Cisco’s industrial physical-infrastructure guide discusses bonding and shield effectiveness.

- Consider the electrical noise in the route and the requirements of the cabling design.
- Confirm that connectors and equipment support the chosen shielded construction.
- Follow applicable bonding, grounding, and installation requirements.
- Use UTP when the system design and environment allow it; shielding alone does not guarantee a better link.
What to check when choosing a cable
Choose for the particular link and installation, not just because a cable is described as “Ethernet” or “twisted pair.” Check:
- Category and application: The cable and installed channel must meet the specification required by the link.
- Length and compatibility: Confirm the permitted channel length, connector type, and compatibility with the Ethernet physical layer or other application.
- Shielding: Match UTP or a specific shielded construction to the environment, components, and bonding plan.
- Conductor and installation details: Check solid or stranded construction, routing conditions, and the jacket rating required for the installation, including indoor, outdoor, or plenum use where applicable.
For example, Belden lists its 50106F as a Category 6 F/UTP cable with twisted pairs, foil shielding, and Ethernet applications. That product illustrates one construction; it does not establish that this cable suits every installation. Belden’s 50106F catalog entry gives its listed construction and applications.
