tsdiscon.exe is the Windows executable for the tsdiscon command, a built-in Remote Desktop Session Host utility that disconnects a user session without signing the user out. Applications normally remain running so the user can reconnect later. A copy in the Windows system directories with a valid Microsoft signature is normally legitimate; an unsigned or oddly located copy needs investigation.
Errors usually come from an incorrect session target, insufficient permission, a remote-host or network problem, or an RDP policy/listener issue. Work through the checks below before replacing or deleting any file.

What tsdiscon.exe does
Microsoft defines tsdiscon as a command that “disconnects a session from a Remote Desktop Session Host server.” The command-line program is exposed as tsdiscon.exe. When you run it without a session ID or session name, Windows disconnects the session in which the command is running. You can also identify another session explicitly, either on the local host or on a named Remote Desktop Session Host.

Disconnecting is not the same as logging off. A disconnected session remains established on the server, while its interactive display and input connection are closed. Programs that were running continue to run and, when the user reconnects, should be present with no loss of data. This is useful when an RDP client closes unexpectedly, when an administrator needs to release a connection without terminating work, or when a user wants to reconnect from another device.

The command is documented for Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2025, Windows 10, Windows 11, and Azure Local 2311.2 and later. Availability and administrative behavior can still be affected by edition, domain policy and the permissions assigned to your account.
Syntax and target selection
Use the documented syntax exactly:
tsdiscon [<sessionID> | <sessionname>] [/server:<servername>] [/v]
| Form | What it targets | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
tsdiscon |
The current session | You are logged on to the session that should be disconnected. |
tsdiscon 10 |
Session ID 10 on the local host | You have confirmed that 10 is the intended session ID. |
tsdiscon TERM04 |
The session named TERM04 | Your session-management view shows that exact session name. |
tsdiscon 10 /server:SERVER01 |
Session ID 10 on SERVER01 | You are administering a remote session host and have network access to it. |
tsdiscon 10 /v |
Session ID 10 with verbose output requested | You need additional command feedback while diagnosing a failure. |
Session IDs are numbers assigned by the host; they are not universal user identifiers and can change after a user signs out. Confirm the current mapping immediately before disconnecting. If you omit both the ID and name, the command acts on the current session, not on a session you may have been viewing earlier.
Disconnect, sign out and reset are different actions
Choose the least destructive action that solves the problem. The following distinctions prevent accidental data loss.
| Action | Connection state | Applications and unsaved work | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
Disconnect with tsdiscon |
Interactive RDP connection ends; session remains on the host. | Applications continue running and should be available after reconnecting. | Recover a dropped client connection or move a working session to another device. |
| Log off or sign out | Session ends normally. | Applications close; unsaved data can be lost unless the applications save it first. | Finish work and release the session deliberately. |
| Reset a session | Session is forcibly terminated. | Microsoft warns that resetting a disconnected session can cause data loss. | Last-resort recovery when a session is irrecoverably stuck and data-loss risk is accepted. |
The console session cannot be disconnected with tsdiscon. A console session is the host’s local interactive session rather than a normal Remote Desktop session, so a command aimed at it can fail even when the syntax is correct.
Is tsdiscon.exe safe?
When it is normal
A genuine copy supplied with Windows is a normal administrative utility. Running it can disconnect a user, but the command itself is not a file cleaner, system optimizer or malware scanner. Its effect is limited to the session target and the permissions available to the account running it.
Why the filename is not enough
Malware can use a familiar filename. Do not decide that a file is authentic merely because Windows reports the name tsdiscon.exe. Check where the file is located, when it appeared and whether its digital signature validates. An unexpected copy outside the Windows system directories, an unsigned executable, or a file created without a known Windows update deserves investigation.

Verify the path and signature
- In File Explorer, right-click the executable, select Properties, and inspect the Location and Digital Signatures tabs. Treat a location outside the normal Windows system directories as a warning rather than proof of malware.
- For a command-line check, use Microsoft’s SignTool verification form:
signtool verify /pa <file>. Signature verification checks that the file has not been altered since signing and that it comes from a trusted source. Run the command against the full path of the file you are investigating. - Microsoft’s Sigcheck utility can display version information, timestamps and certificate-chain details. Compare those details with the Windows installation and update history on the affected computer.
- If security software flags the file, or the signature is missing or invalid, do not replace it by downloading an executable from an unofficial EXE or DLL site. Isolate the file and follow your organization’s malware-investigation process.
Do not delete a suspicious copy while it may be needed as evidence. Preserve its path and metadata, disconnect the computer from sensitive networks if your incident procedure requires it, and involve an administrator or security team.

There is no supported reason to delete the genuine Windows utility. Removing or renaming a system executable can break administration scripts, confuse support procedures and be undone by servicing or an update. If the file is in a normal Windows directory and its signature validates, leave it in place. If you found a second copy in a temporary, download or user-writable directory, investigate that copy separately rather than deleting the legitimate system file.
When a suspicious file is confirmed as unwanted, use your organization’s approved security-remediation process. Do not obtain a replacement from a third-party download site; a replacement file can be modified, mismatched to the installed Windows build or bundled with unwanted software.
Fix tsdiscon.exe errors in a safe order
Start with the least disruptive checks. Capture the exact error text, the computer name, the target session and whether the target is local or remote. That information distinguishes a command problem from an RDP connection problem.
1. Confirm the command and display its help
- Open Command Prompt or PowerShell.
- Run
tsdiscon /?and compare your command with the displayed syntax. - Check every character in the session ID, session name and
/server:<servername>value. Do not add quotation marks or punctuation unless the actual session name requires them. - Try the current-session form,
tsdiscon, only when you intentionally want to disconnect the session running the shell.
A missing target, a mistyped session name, or a server switch pointing to the wrong host can produce a usage or session error. Verbose mode, such as tsdiscon 10 /v, may provide additional feedback.

Never infer a session ID from an old screenshot or ticket. IDs can be reused after sessions end. If the target is the console session, the command is not supported for that target; use the appropriate local administration method instead.
3. Check authorization
Disconnecting another user’s session requires Full Control or the Disconnect special permission on that session. A command can therefore work for your own session and fail for a colleague’s session under the same executable.
- Confirm which account is running the shell.
- Ask the Remote Desktop Session Host administrator to verify the account’s session permissions.
- Use an elevated administrative shell only when your organization’s access policy permits it. Elevation alone does not grant rights that have not been assigned by policy.
- Retry after the permission is corrected, using the same confirmed session ID or name.
Do not work around an authorization error by repeatedly resetting sessions. That can terminate applications and create avoidable data loss.
4. Check whether the target is local or remote
For a local session, omit the server switch. For a remote host, specify the host explicitly, for example tsdiscon 10 /server:SERVER01. Verify the server name, DNS resolution and network route before treating a failure as an executable problem.
A remote command depends on both authorization and reachability. If the host is offline, the session host service is unavailable, or a firewall blocks the management path, the command cannot complete even though tsdiscon.exe is intact.

Record the event time, session ID, user, host and the exact status or reason shown. Correlate that information with the command output rather than treating one event as a universal diagnosis. Logs can show that the disconnect was caused by policy, authentication, a listener or a session-state transition instead of by the utility itself.
6. Check RDP configuration and connectivity
If the command is accepted but the user cannot reconnect, troubleshoot the Remote Desktop service and client path separately. Microsoft identifies several areas that commonly affect disconnections and reconnections:
- RDP-TCP listener configuration and whether the listener is available.
- Group Policy limits on active, idle or disconnected sessions.
- Authentication and encryption settings that do not match the client or organizational policy.
- Port conflicts or a firewall path that prevents Remote Desktop traffic.
- A session that remains active after the client disconnects and therefore cannot accept a new connection as expected.
TCP port 3389 is the standard Remote Desktop port. Confirm the port actually configured for the host and whether it is reachable from the client network; an organization may deliberately use a different port. A blocked or conflicting port explains a client connection failure, not necessarily a failure of tsdiscon.exe.
7. Separate the command from the RDP client
Test the two paths independently. If tsdiscon reports success but the Remote Desktop client still cannot reconnect, retain the successful command output and investigate the client, authentication, policy, listener, network or server state. If the command itself fails before reaching the session, focus on syntax, target selection and authorization first.

Common situations and the right response
“The command is not recognized”
First run tsdiscon /?. If Windows cannot find the command, check that you are on a supported Windows installation and that the shell can locate the system executable. Do not download a replacement from an unofficial site. Verify the system file’s path and signature, then have an administrator repair Windows components through approved servicing if the genuine file is missing.
“Access is denied” or another user cannot be disconnected
Confirm that you have Full Control or Disconnect permission for that session. Check that you are targeting the correct host and that your administrative account is the one actually running the shell. If policy intentionally prevents the action, the host administrator must change the permission; repeatedly retrying the command will not bypass it.
The session ID or name is invalid
Refresh the session list and copy the current ID or exact name. The session may have ended, moved to another host or changed state. For a remote target, add the correct /server:<servername> switch and verify the server name.
The user reconnects and finds the application gone
Check whether someone used log off or reset instead of disconnect. tsdiscon is intended to preserve running applications; resetting a disconnected session can cause data loss. Review the host’s event log and session history to identify the action that actually occurred.
The command works, but reconnection fails
Move to the RDP troubleshooting branch: inspect TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager events, RDP-TCP and Group Policy settings, authentication and encryption requirements, listener health and connectivity to the configured Remote Desktop port. The executable may have completed its task correctly.
Quick Recap
Operational checklist
- Record the exact command and error text.
- Run
tsdiscon /?to confirm syntax. - Refresh the session list and verify the ID, name, user and host.
- Confirm Full Control or Disconnect permission for another user’s session.
- Remember that the console session cannot be disconnected.
- Prefer disconnect over reset when applications or unsaved work matter.
- Review TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager logs at the failure time.
- Check RDP-TCP, Group Policy, authentication, encryption and port reachability.
- Validate any unexpected executable with its path and Microsoft signature tools.
- Never download a replacement executable from an unofficial EXE or DLL site.
