One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThematic investing builds a portfolio around a structural trend, such as efficient energy or genomics innovation, using a defined index or fund methodology. It can reduce AI concentration risk only when the new holdings have genuinely different economic drivers from your existing artificial-intelligence, semiconductor, cloud and mega-cap technology exposure.
A thematic label is not diversification by itself. A narrowly focused ETF can hold many companies that depend on the same customers, interest-rate assumptions or technology cycle, and may therefore increase concentration. The practical test is to inspect the holdings, overlap, sector and country weights, costs and rebalancing rules before buying.

What thematic investing means
Thematic investing selects companies because they are exposed to a long-term economic, technological, demographic or environmental trend. A fund or index provider turns that idea into a rules-based basket rather than buying an entire market or a conventional sector.

How a thematic fund is built
- Define the theme. The provider specifies the trend and what counts as meaningful exposure. The definition may use a minimum percentage of revenue, business-activity screens, patents, geographic criteria or qualitative judgments.
- Identify eligible companies. Companies are admitted when their products, services or investments match the inclusion rules. A company can qualify because the theme is its main business or because one division supplies the relevant technology.
- Assign weights. The index may weight companies by market value, theme-related revenue, an equal-weight formula or a capped method. A cap can limit one stock but does not necessarily prevent the whole basket from being concentrated in one industry.
- Review and rebalance. At scheduled reviews, the provider adds new entrants, removes companies whose business mix changed and adjusts weights. The schedule and rules are part of the investment you are buying.
Examples listed by MSCI include the digital economy, efficient energy, genomics innovation and smart cities. These labels describe different baskets only when their methodologies select companies with different sources of revenue and risk.

Thematic versus broad-market and sector funds
A broad-market fund seeks representation across many industries and companies. A sector fund narrows the universe to an industry such as information technology or health care. A thematic fund can cut across sectors, but the cross-sector appearance may be misleading: software, chip designers, data-center operators and equipment makers can all be tied to the same AI spending cycle.
The CFA Institute’s 2026 brief treats thematic investing as a risk exercise. That means the methodology, correlations and unintended exposures matter as much as the theme’s story.
Why a thematic ETF may not diversify you
Investor.gov defines diversification as “the practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk.” It also warns that a mutual fund or ETF “won’t necessarily provide diversification, especially if it is narrowly focused (such as on one industry sector).” The SEC’s investor bulletin similarly says that concentration in an industry, sector or geographic area can produce greater volatility than a fund that does not concentrate.

Concentration can hide behind a different name
Suppose your broad-market funds already own large positions in the biggest technology companies. An AI-themed fund may own those same issuers, plus semiconductor and cloud companies that rise and fall with the same capital-spending plans. Buying the second fund adds a new wrapper, not necessarily a new source of return.
Even a theme that sounds unrelated can overlap through suppliers, customers or shared valuation assumptions. An “automation” basket may contain the same chip and cloud companies as an AI basket. An “efficient energy” basket may include expensive growth stocks that respond to interest rates in the same way as technology stocks. Diversification requires different drivers, not merely different names.
What to measure before calling a fund diversified
| Measure | What to examine | Why it matters for AI concentration |
|---|---|---|
| Top-10 weight | Percentage of assets in the ten largest holdings and the largest single position | A small number of stocks can dominate returns even when the fund owns dozens of names. |
| Overlap | Identical holdings and combined weights with every current fund and account | Shows whether the proposed purchase simply increases exposure to existing AI or mega-cap technology companies. |
| Sector weights | Technology, semiconductors, communication services, health care, industrials and other classifications | Reveals whether the theme is effectively one sector despite a broad-sounding title. |
| Country weights | Allocation by domicile or primary listing | Concentration in one market adds currency, regulation and political risk. |
| Economic drivers | Customer demand, capital spending, interest-rate sensitivity and commodity exposure | Two funds can have different sectors but still depend on the same AI investment cycle or valuation regime. |
How to reduce AI concentration risk step by step
- Map your existing exposure. List every holding across taxable, retirement and other accounts. Record direct AI, semiconductor, cloud and software positions, then look through broad-market funds for their largest technology holdings. Use current fund fact sheets rather than relying on memory.
- Separate theme exposure from company exposure. Note which holdings earn revenue from model training, chips, data centers, enterprise software, advertising, robotics or other activities. Two funds with different labels may depend on the same customers or suppliers.
- Read the candidate fund’s methodology and prospectus. Record revenue thresholds, activity screens, exclusions, single-stock limits, eligible countries and the index review and rebalance dates. A qualitative screen can produce a different portfolio from a strict revenue test.
- Build an overlap report. Compare the candidate’s constituents and weights with your existing funds. Include indirect overlap: a company that appears small in several funds can become a material combined position.
- Compare sector and country exposures. Check whether the proposed theme adds health care, energy, industrial or consumer revenue, or merely repackages technology. Compare the geographic mix with your current portfolio.
- Test the economic relationship. Ask what would hurt both the current AI holdings and the new theme. If the answer is a slowdown in AI capital expenditure, higher long-term interest rates or a fall in mega-cap technology valuations, the purchase may not reduce the risk you intend to address.
- Review implementation costs. Check the expense ratio, portfolio turnover, bid-ask spread, trading liquidity, tracking error and tax consequences. A fund that is theoretically diversifying can still impose avoidable costs or taxable gains.
- Set a position limit before purchase. Choose a maximum that fits your risk tolerance, time horizon and existing holdings. No universal percentage is appropriate for every investor, and the cited educational sources do not prescribe one.
- Write a rebalancing rule. Decide when you will review the position and what action follows from a breach of your limit. Infrequent, rules-based rebalancing helps prevent a recently successful theme from becoming a new concentration.
- Recheck the holdings. Thematic composition changes at index reviews, corporate mergers and methodology updates. Re-run the overlap and driver analysis periodically rather than assuming the original portfolio remains intact.
Which themes can provide a different economic exposure?
A theme can diversify AI exposure only if its companies make money for reasons that differ materially from your current technology holdings. The following categories are starting points for analysis, not automatic recommendations.

| Candidate theme | Potentially different driver | Overlap or concentration questions |
|---|---|---|
| Health-care innovation or genomics | Clinical demand, reimbursement, research outcomes and demographic needs | Does the basket include the same software, data-center or mega-cap technology companies used in AI funds? How dependent are returns on a small number of unprofitable biotechnology issuers? |
| Efficient energy | Electricity demand, project finance, equipment orders, policy incentives and commodity inputs | Are holdings dominated by high-growth technology valuations, or do they include utilities, manufacturers and infrastructure operators with different cash-flow patterns? |
| Industrial automation | Factory investment, labor costs, capital-goods cycles and order backlogs | How much of the basket is actually robotics hardware and industrial equipment versus AI software and semiconductors? |
| Consumer or demographic trends | Household spending, population changes, brands and distribution networks | Are the largest positions internet platforms or payment companies that already sit in your technology funds? |
| Smart cities | Municipal infrastructure, transport, construction and public-sector procurement | Does the methodology include a high proportion of cloud, telecom and chip suppliers, recreating technology concentration? |
The table describes the questions to investigate, not a claim that any category will be uncorrelated with AI. Correlations can rise during market stress, and a company’s revenue mix can change after the fund’s methodology was written.

Due diligence for an AI or technology ETF
Theme definition and portfolio construction
- What percentage of revenue or business activity qualifies a company?
- Are qualitative judgments used, and who makes them?
- Are companies included for supplying AI infrastructure, using AI internally or merely mentioning the technology?
- What are the single-stock, sector and country limits?
- How are firms with changing business mixes treated at the next review?
Portfolio concentration and correlation
- What are the current top-10 and largest single-stock weights?
- How much overlaps with your broad-market, semiconductor, cloud, software and technology funds?
- Do the holdings depend on the same AI capital-spending cycle, rates or mega-cap valuation assumptions?
- Are revenues diversified by customer, geography and end market, or are they tied to a few large buyers?
Cost and trading quality
- Check the stated expense ratio and how often the portfolio turns over.
- Look at typical bid-ask spreads, assets and trading volume; a narrow or illiquid fund can cost more to enter or exit than its expense ratio suggests.
- Compare the fund’s performance with its index after fees and investigate persistent tracking error.
- Consider whether sales, distributions and rebalancing create taxable consequences in your account.
Governance and disclosures
- Read the index review calendar and the rules for additions, deletions and extraordinary events.
- Confirm that holdings, weights and methodology documents are disclosed often enough for you to monitor overlap.
- Read the prospectus risk section for market, issuer, technology, regulatory, liquidity and concentration risks.
AI-specific risks that can defeat the diversification plan
An SEC-filed prospectus for an AI ETF identifies several risks that apply broadly to AI and technology companies:
- Rapid obsolescence: products can become outdated as models, chips or software architectures improve.
- High research and capital spending: firms may need sustained investment before demand or profits are proven.
- Intense competition: price pressure and fast imitation can reduce margins even when adoption grows.
- Dependence on intellectual property: patents, licenses, data rights and trade secrets can be challenged or expire.
- Legal and regulatory change: privacy, copyright, safety, export controls and competition rules can alter markets quickly.
- Product failure or safety concerns: a harmful output, outage or defective system can damage an issuer’s reputation and finances.
These risks can affect many holdings at once. Owning more AI companies therefore does not necessarily spread the risk; it may spread one risk across a larger number of correlated issuers.

Use a core-and-satellite structure
A broadly diversified core can provide exposure across industries, company sizes and regions. Thematic positions then function as satellites: limited allocations chosen for a specific view and monitored against a written risk limit. This structure makes it easier to distinguish a deliberate theme from an accidental portfolio-wide bet on AI.
Review the satellites on a schedule instead of chasing the latest winning theme. If a position grows beyond its limit, follow the pre-written rebalancing rule. If the methodology changes and the holdings no longer provide the intended economic exposure, reassess the position rather than relying on its original label.
Evidence about investor interest in AI-based investing
The CFA Institute’s 2022 Investor Trust Study found that 81% of institutional investors were more interested in a fund relying primarily on AI and big-data tools than in one relying primarily on human judgment. CFA Institute also reported that nearly half of quantitative investors had integrated AI into their investment processes, with 10% using it extensively. Those figures describe investor interest and adoption; they do not establish that AI-themed funds are safer, better diversified or more profitable.

When a thematic purchase may not fit
A thematic ETF may be unsuitable if you cannot identify its holdings, tolerate large drawdowns, monitor methodology changes or accept the costs of frequent turnover. It may also fail to solve your problem when your existing portfolio is already concentrated in the same companies, sectors, countries or economic drivers.
Your risk tolerance, investment horizon, tax status and complete holdings determine whether a particular fund belongs in your portfolio. The cited regulator and professional-body materials provide education, not individualized investment advice. A written inventory, overlap check and position limit are more reliable safeguards than the theme’s marketing name.
