The semiconductor cycle is the repeating swing from rising chip demand and tight supply to capacity expansion, excess inventory, falling prices and reduced capital spending, followed by a recovery. Investors track it by combining monthly sales and shipment data with inventory, utilization, wafer shipments, capital expenditure (CapEx), equipment billings and company disclosures. No single AI metric or stock tells you the cycle’s phase; the useful signal is the sequence and breadth of changes across the supply chain.
What the semiconductor cycle is
Chip manufacturing is capital intensive and slow to adjust. A new fab, additional lithography tools or a packaging line can take months or years to plan and install, while end-market demand can change in a few quarters. That mismatch creates a recurring pattern: demand rises, inventories fall and manufacturers add capacity; new capacity arrives after a delay; supply then catches up with or exceeds demand; prices, utilization and margins weaken; companies cut production and CapEx; inventories clear; and a new upswing begins.

Axcelis Technologies described the mechanism in its 2025 Form 10-K: “The semiconductor capital equipment industry has historically been cyclical as global chip production capacities successively exceed, then lag behind, global chip demand.” The equipment industry feels the cycle early because chipmakers usually order tools before wafer output increases. Chip designers, foundries, integrated manufacturers, materials suppliers and equipment makers therefore experience the same cycle at different times and with different intensity.
Why chip cycles become so pronounced
Long capacity lead times
Fabs require major fixed investment, specialized equipment and qualified processes. When orders are strong, management teams may commit to capacity based on expected future demand. If several companies make that decision simultaneously, the resulting output can arrive after customers have already reduced orders.

Inventory amplification
Customers and distributors often increase orders when they fear shortages. Those precautionary orders can make demand appear stronger than final consumption. When products become plentiful, the same channel can destock quickly, causing suppliers’ revenue to fall faster than end-user demand.
Product and end-market differences
“The semiconductor industry” is not one market. Memory, leading-edge logic, analog, power, sensors, automotive, industrial, personal-computer and data-center products have different demand drivers and inventory patterns. A surge in AI accelerators and high-bandwidth memory can occur while mature-node industrial chips remain weak. A cycle call must therefore specify the products, customers and regions involved.
The four practical phases of a semiconductor cycle
| Phase | Demand and sales | Inventory and utilization | CapEx and equipment | Typical earnings pattern |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early recovery | Sales stop falling; units stabilize before revenue clearly accelerates. | Inventory growth slows or reverses; fab utilization finds a floor. | Equipment billings stabilize after a decline; only essential projects proceed. | Estimates stop being cut, but margins may still be below normal. |
| Expansion | Revenue and units accelerate; average selling prices (ASPs) improve. | Utilization rises and channel inventories become healthier. | Capacity plans broaden; CapEx and tool orders increase. | Operating leverage lifts gross and operating margins. |
| Late cycle | Headline sales can remain strong, often concentrated in a few products. | Capacity and inventories grow faster than final demand. | CapEx remains high even as lead times shorten or cancellations appear. | Pricing, margins or guidance begin to roll over. |
| Downturn | Revenue and units decline as customers defer orders. | Inventory is liquidated; utilization falls. | Companies cut CapEx, delay fabs and reduce equipment purchases. | Margins contract and earnings revisions turn negative. |
These phases are analytical labels, not official industry dates. Different segments can occupy different phases at the same time. For example, memory may be expanding while analog or industrial demand is still in a downturn.

The investor dashboard: indicators to track
1. Monthly industry demand
Start with World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) data distributed through the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). The series covers revenue, units and ASPs by product, end use and region, with historical data extending back to 1976. SIA says the monthly report is released within five weeks of month-end, and its published sales figures use a three-month moving average.
Record both the latest month and the trend:
- Year over year: shows the direction against the same seasonal period.
- Sequential change: reveals whether momentum is improving from the immediately preceding period.
- Units versus ASPs: separates genuine volume growth from price inflation or deflation.
- Regional and product mix: identifies whether growth is broad or concentrated.
WSTS reported global semiconductor sales of $795.6 billion in 2025, up 26.2% from 2024. Fourth-quarter 2025 revenue was $238.9 billion, up 38.4% year over year. Those are historical results from the 2026 release of 2025 data, not a guarantee that every segment or company was growing at the same rate.
2. Supply-chain confirmation
SEMI’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Monitor brings together quarterly sales, semiconductor inventory, fab utilization, wafer shipments, CapEx, equipment billings, fab capacity and leading-company revenue. These indicators help test whether a sales increase is translating into healthier operations.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Useful combinations include:
- Sales rising while inventory days fall: generally supportive of an early or continuing recovery.
- Sales rising while inventory and capacity rise faster: a warning that the expansion may be maturing.
- Utilization improving before CapEx accelerates: consistent with a disciplined early recovery.
- CapEx surging while utilization is flat: possible overbuilding or a capacity commitment aimed at a narrow future market.
3. Equipment billings as a lead signal
SEMI reports global semiconductor equipment billings as a three-month average, published about three weeks after month-end. Because chipmakers order tools before new wafer capacity produces revenue, billings can turn before industry sales. A stabilization after a long decline can support an early-recovery view; a sharp acceleration across several months can confirm expansion.

Equipment data are not infallible. A few leading-edge projects can lift billings while mature-node utilization remains weak. Check the equipment trend against wafer shipments, utilization and the product mix of the projects being funded.

- Distributor inventory days and changes in customer-owned inventory.
- Backlog, cancellation rates, book-to-bill and order intake.
- ASP movement by product or business line.
- Fab utilization, wafer starts and outsourced manufacturing costs.
- Gross-margin direction and the explanation for each change.
- CapEx actuals, planned spending and the timing of new capacity.
- Customer concentration and geographic exposure.
For a concrete example, Microchip Technology reported distributor inventory of 25 days at June 30, 2026, compared with 26 days at March 31, 2026, in its 2026 Form 10-Q. That is one company’s channel measure, not proof that the entire analog and microcontroller market had normalized. Use it as a data point alongside other suppliers and end markets.
5. Segment breadth
Separate memory, logic, analog, power, sensors, industrial, automotive, personal-computer and AI/data-center exposure. A recovery led by AI servers may lift advanced logic, high-bandwidth memory and selected networking products while leaving automotive or factory automation inventories elevated. Breadth matters because a narrow boom is more vulnerable to a customer, product or capital-spending shock.

Early recovery checklist
- Monthly sales stop declining and sequential changes become less negative or turn positive.
- Inventory growth slows, and distributors report fewer excess stocks.
- Utilization bottoms before broad CapEx increases.
- Equipment billings stabilize after a downturn.
- Management commentary shifts from reductions to stable or cautiously improving orders.
Expansion checklist
- Revenue and unit shipments accelerate across more than one product family.
- ASPs, gross margins and operating margins improve together.
- Utilization rises and customers begin placing capacity orders.
- Equipment billings and CapEx increase for several periods, not just one project.
Late-cycle checklist
- Capacity additions and CapEx grow faster than end-market units.
- Inventory days rise despite strong reported revenue.
- ASP or margin growth slows, especially in previously hot products.
- Growth is concentrated in one customer, geography or AI-related segment.
- Management continues spending while acknowledging longer lead times, cancellations or weaker mature markets.
Downturn checklist
- Sales and units decline on both year-over-year and sequential measures.
- Customers and distributors liquidate inventory.
- Utilization falls and production schedules are cut.
- Companies defer fabs, reduce CapEx and lower equipment orders.
- Earnings estimates and margins move down across several suppliers.
A repeatable tracking workflow
- Set a dated baseline. Record the latest WSTS/SIA revenue, units, ASP, product and regional changes. Note whether each figure is monthly, quarterly, a three-month average or a forecast.
- Update the supply-chain sheet quarterly. Add inventory, utilization, wafer shipments, CapEx, fab capacity and equipment billings from SEMI and company reports.
- Sample the value chain. Read filings from at least one fabless designer, foundry or integrated manufacturer, equipment supplier and materials supplier. Compare their orders, backlog, inventory and margin commentary.
- Mark the sequence. Label each indicator improving, flat or deteriorating. A recovery is more credible when sales improve first, inventory and utilization follow, and CapEx responds later.
- Test breadth. Split the dashboard into memory, logic, analog, sensors, industrial, automotive and AI/data-center columns. Do not let one fast-growing column determine the whole-industry label.
- Separate history from expectations. WSTS historical sales, WSTS forecasts and company guidance are different data types. Keep them in separate rows and record the publication date.
- Reassess valuation by phase. Cyclical earnings often look cheapest near a peak, when profits are temporarily inflated, and most expensive near a trough, when profits are depressed. Compare normalized earnings power and balance-sheet resilience, not only the current price-to-earnings ratio.
Comparing semiconductor companies through the cycle
| Company type | What usually leads or lags | Key measures | Main cycle risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fabless designer | Product orders can turn quickly; it may carry little manufacturing capacity. | End-market units, ASP, customer inventory, design wins and gross margin. | Customer concentration or a product transition can overwhelm industry growth. |
| Foundry | Utilization and wafer pricing reveal demand after customers commit production. | Utilization, wafer starts, node mix, wafer pricing and CapEx. | Large fixed costs make underutilization painful. |
| Integrated manufacturer | Owns both production and product exposure; results can be mixed by segment. | Inventory, utilization, internal and external wafer supply, ASP and CapEx. | Weak demand can leave excess owned capacity and finished goods. |
| Equipment maker | Orders and billings often lead wafer output; delivery timing can be lumpy. | Bookings, book-to-bill, backlog, billings, service revenue and customer CapEx. | Project delays can cause a sharp quarterly revenue swing. |
| Materials supplier | Tracks wafer starts and process intensity, sometimes with less direct product risk. | Wafer shipments, consumables volume, pricing and customer utilization. | Technology changes or customer qualification losses can reduce share. |
For each company, compare node maturity, product mix, geographic exposure, customer concentration, inventory days, utilization, ASP direction, gross-margin trend, backlog and CapEx intensity. Two companies can face the same market recovery but report it in different quarters because their positions in the chain differ.
What the latest broad data imply
The 2025 industry results show a powerful expansion led by computer applications, AI and data-center infrastructure. WSTS also reported that industrial demand returned to growth, a sign that some inventory and CapEx pressure was easing. The breadth test remains essential: compare that strength with analog, sensors, industrial and automotive demand, then confirm the sales picture with inventory, utilization and equipment billings.
The correct conclusion is not “the entire industry is in recovery” based on one company or one AI metric. The defensible conclusion depends on the period, geography, product segment and data vintage. A broad recovery should eventually appear in several independent measures; a narrow boom should be described as narrow.

- Using one month as a turning point: monthly data are noisy and seasonal. Use sequential and year-over-year changes together, preferably with three-month averages.
- Confusing revenue with units: higher ASPs can lift sales while unit demand is flat. Track both.
- Treating forecasts as results: label WSTS forecasts and company guidance separately from reported sales.
- Ignoring the channel: distributor inventory can delay or magnify the factory signal.
- Calling CapEx bullish by itself: spending can represent necessary catch-up investment or overcapacity. Pair it with utilization and demand.
- Generalizing from AI: identify which products and customers benefit, then inspect mature-node and non-data-center demand.
- Buying the lowest multiple: cyclical profits can be temporarily high at a peak. Stress-test margins and utilization through a full cycle.
Data sources and update cadence
WSTS/SIA monthly market data provide revenue, units, ASPs, product, end-use and regional history and forecasts; SIA says the monthly release arrives within five weeks of month-end. SEMI’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Monitor is a quarterly source for sales, inventory, utilization, wafer shipments, CapEx, equipment billings, fab capacity and company revenue. SEMI’s equipment-billings series is published about three weeks after month-end and uses a three-month average. Check the current terms and coverage of any commercial subscription before relying on it.
For an individual investor, a simple spreadsheet with publication dates, three-month averages, sequential changes, year-over-year changes and segment labels is enough to make the cycle visible. The value comes from updating it consistently and resisting a phase change until several indicators agree.
