What Is the Safest Browser for Windows 10?

Edge and Firefox remain Windows 10 options under vendor support guidance, but no browser can replace missing Windows security updates. Learn how to choose and reduce risk.

No browser can be named the universally safest for Windows 10 based on the available evidence. Microsoft Edge is a defensible default: Microsoft says it will keep receiving updates on Windows 10 version 22H2 until at least October 2028, and it includes optional Enhanced Security modes. Mozilla also says Firefox will continue receiving updates and security patches on Windows 10. Whichever browser you choose, keep it updated and turn on its security protections. The bigger concern is that standard support for Windows 10 Home and Pro ended on October 14, 2025; a browser cannot replace missing operating-system security updates.

What is the safest browser for Windows 10?

Choose a browser that still receives updates for your Windows version, keep it current, and enable its available protections. Edge and Firefox are both viable choices according to their vendors’ published Windows 10 guidance. The sources available do not provide a controlled, current head-to-head security test, so they do not establish that one blocks more threats or is categorically safer.

Your best choice also depends on website compatibility, accessibility needs, privacy preferences, and whether you want to use a browser account. Those practical differences matter, but they do not change the need to address Windows 10’s support status.

Is Microsoft Edge still supported on Windows 10?

Yes, for Windows 10 version 22H2, Microsoft says Edge and the WebView2 Runtime will continue to receive updates until at least October 2028. Microsoft’s statement does not require enrollment in the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Edge updates. Microsoft’s Edge supported operating systems documentation gives the current support details.

Enable Edge Enhanced Security

Edge’s optional Enhanced Security feature offers Balanced and Strict modes. Microsoft says it reduces exposure to some memory-related vulnerabilities by disabling just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compilation and enabling additional operating-system protections. It is a hardening option, not a guarantee that a site or browser is free of risk.

  • Balanced is a reasonable starting point for ordinary browsing.
  • Strict applies stronger restrictions, but some sites may not work as expected. If a site you rely on has problems, try Balanced or adjust the protection for that site.

See Microsoft’s explanation of Enhanced Security Mode for its modes and configuration details.

Does Firefox still get security updates on Windows 10?

Mozilla says Firefox will continue receiving updates, security patches, and performance improvements on Windows 10. Its guidance specifically identifies Firefox ESR 140 and ESR 153 as supporting Windows 10. Mozilla has not established an indefinite commitment in that guidance, so check its live support information for the latest release and any future cutoff. What about Google Chrome on Windows 10?

Google’s Chrome Enterprise system requirements page lists Windows 10 and says no Chrome deprecation release is scheduled, while also showing Microsoft’s October 2025 deprecation date. That entry does not promise Chrome updates through a specific future date. Install available Chrome updates and check Google’s current Chrome system requirements rather than treating the listing as a dated long-term commitment.

Is Windows 10 safe to use after support ended?

Windows 10 Home and Pro standard support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says these PCs continue to work, but they no longer receive regular security updates from Microsoft. That increases exposure to malware and viruses as newly discovered operating-system vulnerabilities go unpatched. A supported browser can protect against some browser-level threats, but it cannot supply missing Windows fixes.

This date applies to Home and Pro standard support, not every Windows 10 edition. LTSC and IoT editions can have different support lifecycles, so check the lifecycle for your exact edition before applying the Home and Pro date to your PC. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support guidance.

What to do if you still use Windows 10

  1. Check your edition and version. Open Settings > System > About to find your Windows specifications. Confirm whether you use Home, Pro, or another edition, and whether you are on version 22H2.
  2. Install browser updates. Use the browser’s built-in update page or settings. Restart it if prompted so the update takes effect. For Edge and Firefox, follow the vendor support guidance above; for Chrome, check Google’s live requirements.
  3. Review browser protections. In Edge, open Settings > Privacy, search, and services and look for the security options, including Enhanced Security. Consider Balanced for everyday use; test Strict if you accept that some sites may have compatibility issues.
  4. Check whether Windows 11 is available for your PC. Use Windows Update or Microsoft’s upgrade guidance to determine eligibility. If your PC qualifies, moving to a supported Windows release addresses the operating-system support issue more directly than changing browsers.
  5. If you cannot upgrade, check ESU eligibility. Microsoft says consumer ESU can provide protection for eligible Windows 10 devices until October 12, 2027. Eligibility and enrollment requirements depend on the device and edition; follow Microsoft’s ESU enrollment guidance.

If your PC cannot run Windows 11 and you are not eligible for ESU, replacing it with a Windows 11-compatible computer is one option. A new computer is not automatically secure: it still needs current updates, protective software, and careful browsing habits. Microsoft outlines upgrade and replacement paths in its Windows end-of-support guidance.

Everyday protections that still matter

  • Install operating-system and browser updates as soon as they are available to you.
  • Use reputable security software and keep it current.
  • Be cautious with unexpected downloads, attachments, and links, even when they appear in a familiar browser.
  • Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication for important accounts where available.
