A prop-firm free trial is a practice version of a provider’s evaluation, not a promise of funding. Use it to learn the platform and test whether your approach can follow the provider’s rules—but compare the trial with the paid evaluation first, because trial targets and requirements may be easier or different.
What a prop-firm free trial can tell you
A trial can help you get familiar with a provider’s trading environment and tools, and see how your approach performs under the trial’s particular conditions. For example, FTMO says its free trial is intended to familiarize prospective clients with its environment and tools and help them assess their trading approach. That makes a trial useful for checking practical fit: Can you use the platform confidently? Can you follow the stated risk limits? Does your method work within the available time and other rules? A trial result applies to that exercise and its terms; it does not establish how you will perform in a paid evaluation or in live markets.

Read the trial and evaluation rules side by side. FTMO’s disclosed terms illustrate why: its 2-Step trial covers one phase rather than the full evaluation, reduces the profit target from 10% to 5%, and reduces the minimum trading days from four to two. For its 1-Step trial, FTMO says the profit target falls from 10% to 5%. Compare the measures that determine success or failure, not just the headline target:
- Profit target and how it is calculated.
- Daily and overall loss limits, including how the provider defines or measures them.
- Minimum trading days and any deadline or time limit.
- Number of phases and the requirements in each phase.
- Whether the trial and paid evaluation use the same platform, instruments, trading hours, and execution conditions.
Do not assume execution conditions match simply because the interface looks the same. Check the provider’s current terms for spreads, commissions, and any other relevant conditions where they are published. If rules can change during an evaluation, find out what applies to an existing participant.

Check restrictions, costs, and what happens after passing
Read the full trading and termination rules
Find the prohibited-practices and account-termination terms before paying. Check whether the specific product restricts news trading, overnight or weekend positions, automated strategies, copy trading, or multiple accounts. These conditions vary by provider and product; do not infer them from the trial alone.

Confirm the evaluation fee, when a fee may be refundable, and the cost of renewals, resets, subscriptions, or other required services. Where relevant, check registration and disciplinary status, bearing in mind that regulatory requirements depend on the service, products, and jurisdiction. Do not assume every prop firm is covered by the same regulatory regime.
Clarify what “account” means
Read the provider’s terms for the evaluation and any account or rewards offered after it. Labels such as “funded” do not, by themselves, explain whether trading uses live firm capital. FTMO states that its free trial, evaluation, and account use simulated trading and fictitious capital. That description applies to FTMO’s program; check the arrangement of any other provider directly. FTMO: What is “Trading according to a real market”?
How to use a trial as a meaningful test
- Write down the paid evaluation’s rules. Record targets, loss limits, minimum days, deadlines, phases, and restrictions from the current terms.
- Mark every difference. Compare those requirements with the trial. A relaxed target or shorter minimum may make the trial easier, so do not treat a pass as proof you can meet the paid standard.
- Practice the actual workflow. Learn order entry and the platform’s tools, then check that the instruments and trading hours available in the trial suit your intended approach.
- Keep a trade journal. Record each trade, the reason for entry, your risk decision, and whether you checked the rules. Use a provider’s journal if offered, or a notebook; FTMO identifies a Trading Journal among its trial tools. FTMO’s free-trial FAQ
- Judge process as well as outcome. Note whether you followed your plan and stayed within the trial’s limits. A profitable result achieved by breaking rules is not evidence that your approach fits the evaluation.
- Decide against the paid terms, not the trial’s headline. Pay only if you understand the evaluation’s requirements and costs and have a reason to believe the trial tested relevant skills under sufficiently similar conditions.
What a successful trial does—and does not—show
Passing shows that you completed that particular trial under its rules. It is not a qualification, a payout guarantee, or evidence that future results will match. FTMO says passing its free trial does not guarantee success in either of its paid challenges or automatically secure an account; participants still have to meet the selected product’s requirements. There is a broader limitation, too: simulated or hypothetical results have inherent limits and may differ from actual trading. The CFTC’s guidance on hypothetical performance explains why simulated results cannot establish that future live execution or profitability will be the same. In short, use a free trial to test your understanding of the provider’s tools and rules. Treat its results as evidence about that trial—not as a forecast of paid-evaluation success or live-market performance.
