What Is the Opus Audio Codec? A Guide for Streamers

Opus is a lossy IETF codec for interactive speech and music. Learn what its bitrate and sample-rate specifications mean—and why WebRTC support does not guarantee live-stream ingest support.

Opus is a lossy audio codec standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for interactive speech and audio, including music. It can be a strong choice for real-time audio, but that does not mean every live-streaming platform accepts Opus for broadcast ingest. Check the receiving platform’s current encoder requirements before choosing a codec.

What Opus is—and what it is not

RFC 6716 defines Opus as an interactive speech and audio codec for uses such as voice over IP, videoconferencing, in-game chat, and live distributed music. Published as an IETF Standards Track document in September 2012, it combines linear prediction (LP) and modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) coding to serve both speech and music applications. RFC 6716 describes it as “the Opus interactive speech and audio codec.”

For streamers, Opus is an encoding and decoding choice in a software-and-transport chain. It is not a microphone type, and the codec specification alone does not define a complete streaming workflow or determine what a platform accepts.

What Opus can do: bitrate, delay, and channels

RFC 6716 specifies a bitrate range of 6–510 kbit/s and algorithmic delay of 5–65.2 ms. These are codec capabilities, not universal recommended settings or guarantees that a higher bitrate will always sound better. The result also depends on the material, mono or stereo configuration, bandwidth mode, frame size, encoder settings, and transport constraints.

For 20 ms frames, the RFC gives example bitrate “sweet spots” by use case:

Use case Example bitrate
Narrowband speech 8–12 kbit/s
Wideband speech 16–20 kbit/s
Fullband speech 28–40 kbit/s
Fullband mono music 48–64 kbit/s
Fullband stereo music 64–128 kbit/s

These figures are examples in RFC 6716, not presets for every encoder or live platform. Match the setting to your audio and check the requirements of the software and destination you use.

Opus supports mono and stereo frames. Encoder parameters can change dynamically without stopping the stream, and signaling is carried in-band so a decoder can interpret the stream. Those capabilities do not override limits imposed by an application, transport, or receiving service.

Opus sample rate and bandwidth: why “48 kHz” can mislead

The RFC defines five audio bandwidths and their corresponding effective sample rates. Fullband has a 48 kHz effective sample rate, but Opus does not code audio above 20 kHz. The sample-rate figure is not the audio bandwidth.

  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

Is Opus good for streaming?

Opus is relevant to real-time audio: WebRTC standards refer to it, and RFC 7875 specifies mandatory Opus implementation for WebRTC endpoints. That makes it an important codec in browser-based and other real-time communication. It does not establish that a particular video-streaming service accepts Opus as live broadcast ingest.

Before selecting Opus for a live stream, confirm the destination’s current official encoder documentation and the settings supported by your streaming software. Do not infer platform ingest support from WebRTC compatibility. If you are comparing codecs for a particular workflow, consider platform and transport compatibility, bitrate at the same channel count and for comparable content, end-to-end latency, and the recording or archival format you need.

Opus licensing

The Opus project describes the specification as freely available and says its reference encoder and decoder can be integrated into applications, including commercial products, under its stated terms. The project also describes royalty-free patent licenses for compatible use and notes a patent-litigation condition. Read the current Opus license terms before relying on them for a commercial implementation; this summary is not legal advice.
