Live video transcoding converts an incoming live video feed into one or more encoded outputs that can be delivered and played by viewers. In adaptive-bitrate streaming, those outputs are prepared at different bitrates and often resolutions, allowing a compatible player to switch between them as network and playback conditions change. Transcoding is only one stage: packaging prepares media segments and playlists or manifests, and a CDN delivers them.
How live video transcoding works
A typical live streaming workflow moves through five stages. Some systems combine stages or use different components, but the roles remain distinct.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Ingest the live feed. A camera, production system, or other live source sends a feed to an encoder or live-processing service. For resilience, an architecture may ingest parallel feeds; AWS’s reference design uses two inputs for its MediaLive workflow, but that is an example rather than a universal requirement. AWS: Guidance for Live Streaming on AWS.
- Encode or transcode. The system compresses video into formats and output renditions suitable for playback. For adaptive-bitrate delivery, it commonly creates multiple versions with different bitrates and resolutions. The exact processing varies: “transcoding” often means converting an already encoded incoming feed into new outputs, but it does not mean every workflow must decode and re-encode every stream.
- Package the outputs. Encoded media is organized into segments and described by playlists or manifests so streaming clients can request it in the required format. AWS describes MediaPackage as a packaging stage; its CloudFront documentation also explains the role of segments and manifests. AWS: Video on demand and live streaming video with CloudFront.
- Deliver the packaged stream. A content delivery network (CDN) distributes the segments to viewers. A CDN’s delivery role is separate from transcoding: distributing a stream does not itself establish that the video was transcoded.
- Select a rendition and play. The player downloads available media and chooses a suitable version. It can change choices as measured download speed, playback capabilities, or other conditions change. The IETF describes adaptive-bitrate selection as a client response to observed application-layer download speed and changing playback conditions. IETF RFC 9317: Operational Considerations for Streaming Media.
What adaptive-bitrate streaming means
Adaptive-bitrate (ABR) streaming makes multiple prepared renditions available to a playback client. The client selects among them: it may move to a lower-bitrate version when the connection cannot sustain a higher one, or use a higher available version when conditions permit. The result can better accommodate differences in bandwidth, device capability, and playback conditions than relying on only one rendition.
ABR does not improve the original source or guarantee uninterrupted playback. A weak or unstable source feed remains a limitation, and network congestion or player buffering can still interrupt viewing. The client can choose only from the renditions the service has prepared.

Transcoding, encoding, packaging, and delivery are different
| Term | What it means in a live workflow |
|---|---|
| Encoding | Compressing video into a coded form suitable for storage or playback. A live encoder may create the initial compressed feed. |
| Transcoding | Producing different encoded outputs from an incoming feed—for example, a set of renditions for adaptive-bitrate playback. The precise processing depends on the implementation. |
| Packaging | Arranging encoded media into segments and creating playlists or manifests for a delivery format. It is related to, but not synonymous with, transcoding. AWS CloudFront live streaming documentation. |
| CDN delivery | Distributing the packaged media to viewers. Delivery is a separate function from encoding and packaging. |
Where HLS, DASH, and CMAF fit
HLS and MPEG-DASH are streaming delivery formats or protocols used to make segmented media available to compatible clients; they are not names for the transcoding process. CMAF is a segmented-media format that can support adaptive presentations delivered through HLS and MPEG-DASH. Apple: About the Common Media Application Format with HTTP Live Streaming (HLS).
Apple describes HLS as sending audio and video over HTTP from an ordinary web server for playback on supported Apple devices and desktop computers. Actual playback depends on the target device, player, codecs, and delivery setup, so check the requirements for the platforms you intend to serve. Apple Developer Documentation: HTTP Live Streaming.

Example architecture: AWS live streaming
AWS’s documented design illustrates how separate services can handle the pipeline: MediaLive ingests two feeds and creates adaptive-bitrate HLS outputs; MediaPackage packages output for HLS, DASH, and CMAF; CloudFront distributes the result. This is an example architecture, not a required blueprint or a claim that every system uses the same service split. AWS: Guidance for Live Streaming on AWS.

Quality, bitrate, and bandwidth
Higher-quality renditions generally need more bitrate and delivery capacity. There is no universal rendition ladder: Apple describes its published encoding bitrates as initial targets for typical content and advises evaluating them against the actual content and workflow. A configuration appropriate for one source, audience, or network may not suit another. Apple: HLS authoring specification for Apple devices.

Codec and device compatibility
A rendition is useful only if the target player can decode it. Codec, profile, container, and device support affect compatibility. Apple’s HLS authoring specification sets out requirements for Apple-targeted workflows; for other platforms, verify their current guidance rather than assuming the same requirements apply. Apple: HLS authoring specification for Apple devices.
Latency and buffering
End-to-end latency depends on the full system, including encoding and decoding, segment and playlist behavior, network conditions, and player buffering. Shortening HLS segments is not a universal fix: AWS cautions that doing so can affect quality and increase buffering in some workflows. Treat low latency as a system-level trade-off, not simply a transcoder setting. AWS re:Post: How can I reduce the latency of HLS delivery in MediaLive?

Resilience
Redundant inputs or parallel processing can reduce exposure to a single point of interruption. AWS’s two-feed reference design illustrates one approach; it does not guarantee resilience in another deployment. The full path—including source, processing, packaging, and delivery—must be considered when designing for continuity. AWS: Guidance for Live Streaming on AWS.

A live event needs an encoder, which may be off-the-shelf hardware, while cloud services can also perform live encoding or transcoding. Hardware entails equipment and operational requirements; cloud processing shifts work to a service but has processing and delivery costs.
