What Is the Nasdaq Composite, and Which Stocks Affect It Most?

The Nasdaq Composite covers thousands of Nasdaq-listed stocks, but market-cap weighting gives its largest companies outsized influence. Here’s how to identify the likely drivers without confusing ETF holdings with official index weights.

The Nasdaq Composite is a broad stock-market index covering domestic and international common-type stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Nasdaq reported 3,393 components on October 12, 2026. Because the index is weighted by total listed market capitalization, its largest companies generally have the greatest influence on its daily movement. A recent snapshot of the ONEQ ETF’s holdings points to Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon as likely major drivers, but it does not establish those stocks’ exact current weights or ranking in the Composite.

What the Nasdaq Composite measures

The Nasdaq Composite tracks eligible common-type stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Nasdaq’s official index overview describes it as measuring “all Nasdaq domestic and international based common type stocks listed on The Nasdaq Stock Market.” The key distinction is that the index is organized around where a security is listed, not simply around a particular company size or industry.

Nasdaq reported 3,393 components as of October 12, 2026. That count gives a sense of the index’s breadth, but it does not mean every company has equal influence. The Composite is market-capitalization weighted, so its result reflects the combined effect of constituents according to their size rather than a simple average of the share-price changes of thousands of stocks.

The index can therefore move substantially even when many smaller constituents barely change: a pronounced move in a very large company can outweigh moves in a great many smaller ones. Conversely, a rally among smaller companies may have limited effect on the headline index if the biggest constituents are flat or falling.

How the Composite weights stocks

Nasdaq’s methodology weights a constituent by its total listed market capitalization: the company’s total shares outstanding multiplied by its share price. In practical terms, a company with a larger total market value receives a larger weight in the index. The Composite does not use a float adjustment, and Nasdaq’s June 2026 comparison says it does not impose concentration caps on a company’s influence.

That means the index is not designed to give each company, sector or industry an equal say. The influence of a constituent follows its market value. If a large constituent’s share price rises or falls, the change in its value can move the index more than the same percentage change in a much smaller constituent.

A simplified example of influence

Suppose, purely for illustration, that one stock represented 10% of an index and rose 1%, while every other constituent stayed unchanged. Its approximate contribution to the index’s move would be 0.1 percentage point: 10% of the index multiplied by a 1% stock move. This is a simplified way to understand weighting, not a calculation of any current Nasdaq Composite constituent or a prediction of an index return.

The example shows why a stock’s percentage move alone is not enough to determine its effect. To estimate a constituent’s influence, you need both its move and its index weight. The same stock move matters more when the company has a larger weight; the same company weight matters more on a day when its shares move sharply.

Which stocks are likely to affect it most?

A ONEQ holdings snapshot updated October 9, 2026 lists Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon among the ETF’s largest holdings. These are useful names to watch as likely major influences on the Composite, but the snapshot is a proxy, not Nasdaq’s official constituent-weight file. ONEQ’s reported holdings and weights need not exactly match the full index basket, so the list should not be treated as a confirmed current top five or as a precise ranking.

The distinction matters because an ETF is an investment fund with its own reported holdings, while the Composite is an index with thousands of components. Nasdaq’s overview reported 3,393 components on October 12, 2026; a much smaller fund holdings list cannot, by itself, confirm the index’s exact current membership weights. Do not infer current Composite percentages from the fund’s holdings data.

Historical data illustrates how much the leading companies’ weights can matter, while also showing why dates must accompany any specific percentages. In an October 2023 research paper, Nasdaq reported Apple at 12.90% and Microsoft at 12.14%, and said the top ten constituents together represented over 52% of the Composite’s weight at that time. Those are historical figures, not current weights. They should not be used to describe the index on October 12, 2026, or any later date.

For a precise current ranking and percentages, use a dated Nasdaq constituent-weight file rather than a list of familiar companies or an ETF snapshot. Nasdaq’s public Composite weighting page showed data dated October 12, 2026, but full access required login or registration. Nasdaq describes Global Index Watch as the interface for index weights and components; it also notes that daily pro forma data is indicative, can change and is supplied on an as-is basis. Without an accessible, dated official file, the exact current ordering and weights are not established here.

Nasdaq Composite vs. Nasdaq-100

The Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq-100 are separate indexes. The Composite is the broader measure of eligible Nasdaq-listed common-type stocks. The Nasdaq-100 contains 100 large non-financial companies and applies its own eligibility, seasoning and reconstitution rules. Nasdaq’s June 11, 2026 comparison describes these differences, including the indexes’ distinct weighting approaches.

How a listing enters Nasdaq’s June 2026 explanation says a new listing enters on its second trading day, provided it meets basic listing requirements. Follows separate eligibility and seasoning rules; a new listing does not enter solely because it has begun trading.
Weighting Total listed market capitalization, with no float adjustment or concentration cap, according to Nasdaq’s methodology and June 2026 comparison. Uses a modified weighting approach with concentration controls, according to Nasdaq’s June 2026 comparison.
Potential drivers Large companies can dominate, but financials, smaller constituents and newly listed companies are also within the broader coverage when eligible. Large non-financial constituents drive results; it excludes financial companies.

The broader coverage can lead to different performance. The indexes may move in the same direction because they share exposure to large Nasdaq-listed companies, but they can diverge when financials, smaller companies or recently listed mega-cap companies perform differently from established large non-financial companies. Their different weighting rules can also affect how strongly a particular constituent influences each index.

Do not assume that an investment product described as “Nasdaq-linked” tracks the Composite. Nasdaq notes that many Nasdaq-linked products track the Nasdaq-100, while the commonly displayed “NASDAQ” index measure refers to the Composite. Check the benchmark named in the product’s documents; the index label and the actual benchmark are not interchangeable.

How to check what is moving the index

  1. Confirm which index you mean. Look for “Nasdaq Composite” or its common display label, “NASDAQ.” If you are examining a fund or other investment product, read its documents to identify its benchmark instead of assuming it follows the Composite.
  2. Use the index’s own component data for exact weights. Nasdaq’s Global Index Watch is the described interface for weights and constituents. Use a dated file if you need the official ranking or percentages; the public weighting page indicated that full access required login or registration.
  3. Check the date on every weight. Constituent weights change as prices and total market values change. Nasdaq’s displayed weighting data was dated October 12, 2026, while its historical Apple and Microsoft figures are from October 2023. Do not carry an old percentage forward as a current value.
  4. Separate official index data from an ETF snapshot. ONEQ’s October 9, 2026 holdings can point to large companies to watch, but it does not certify their exact Composite weights. Identify the source and date whenever you cite holdings or percentages.
  5. Read the contribution, not just the headline move. A constituent’s likely influence depends on its index weight and its price change. A large percentage move in a smaller constituent may matter less to the index than a modest move in a much larger one.

Why the index count is not a measure of diversification by itself

Thousands of components make the Composite broad in membership, but component count alone does not reveal how evenly influence is distributed. With market-cap weighting and no concentration cap, the largest companies can account for a substantial share of the index’s movement. Nasdaq’s October 2023 figures—top ten constituents above 52% of weight—illustrate that concentration at that specific time. They do not establish the current share held by the top ten.

For readers comparing performance, it is useful to distinguish breadth from balance. Breadth asks how many eligible stocks are included. Balance asks how much influence different constituents have. The Composite can be broad by the first measure while still being led by a relatively small group of large companies by the second.

That distinction also explains why counting advancers and decliners does not necessarily predict the Composite’s direction. Many smaller stocks could rise while a heavily weighted constituent falls enough to offset them, or a few large constituents could lift the index even if a greater number of small stocks decline. The weighting method, rather than the raw number of stocks moving up or down, determines their relative contribution.

What to take from a Nasdaq Composite headline

A headline about the Composite describes a market-value-weighted index of Nasdaq-listed common-type stocks, not the performance of every stock equally and not necessarily the performance of the Nasdaq-100. For the index’s current leading influences, Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon are reasonable names to monitor based on ONEQ’s October 9, 2026 holdings snapshot, with the important qualification that the snapshot does not establish their exact official Composite weights or rank.

For exact attribution, match the correct index, source and date: use official Nasdaq constituent-weight data when available, and treat fund holdings as an indicator rather than a substitute. The most consequential stock on a given day is determined not merely by how recognizable it is or how much its price changes, but by that move in relation to its weight in the index.
