AI glasses do not necessarily process everything on the glasses. Depending on the feature and product, voice and camera input may be handled by the glasses, a paired phone, or a cloud service—or split across all three. In Meta’s documented visual-question flow, a spoken prompt is converted to text, paired with a camera image, and sent to an AI model; ordinary gallery photos follow a separate storage path. The distinction matters: a photo can stay on the glasses when saved to the gallery yet be sent to the cloud when used for visual AI.
How a voice-and-camera request becomes an AI answer
A visual question is a sequence of separate steps, not simply a camera “asking AI” on its own. Meta’s description of its multimodal system provides a documented example. It applies to the described Meta AI glasses flow; it should not be treated as a universal design for every manufacturer, model, software version, region, or setting.

- The wearer invokes the assistant. In Meta’s example, the wearer says “Hey Meta” and asks a question. The documented flow starts with an invoked request; it does not establish that all surrounding conversation is continuously uploaded.
- Speech is transcribed. Speech-recognition software converts the spoken words into text that can be sent to the model.
- The camera supplies visual context. For a question about what the wearer is looking at, the glasses capture a photo. The request text and captured image become linked inputs to the AI model.
- The model generates a response. The answer may be returned as text in the companion app and played through the glasses’ speakers. Ray-Ban’s FAQ describes an audio answer for visual AI questions and says the wearer can review the request, image, and response in Meta AI.
For example, asking what a plant is or what a sign says can involve both the words spoken and the image captured. The answer depends on both inputs. A speech transcript alone would not contain the scene, while a photo alone would not necessarily communicate what the wearer wants to know.

That distinction also sets a limit on what can be concluded from the example: it describes an AI interaction initiated by the wearer, not a general policy for every microphone or camera state. A product’s documentation for a particular feature is the right place to check whether it uses invocation, background sensing, or some other trigger.

Gallery capture and AI analysis are different data paths
“Where do my glasses store photos?” has no single answer unless the question specifies what the wearer did with the image. Meta’s July 2026 explanation distinguishes ordinary gallery media from a photo submitted for visual AI analysis. Ray-Ban’s product FAQ describes the cloud-processing path for an AI question.
| Action or data | Documented handling | What that does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary gallery photo or video | Meta says gallery photos and videos are stored privately on the glasses until the wearer imports them to a phone or chooses to share them. | This describes gallery storage before import or sharing; it does not mean every image captured by the camera stays on the glasses. |
| Photo used to ask a visual AI question | Ray-Ban’s FAQ says the photo is sent to Meta’s cloud for processing when the wearer asks Meta AI about what they are looking at. | This is a feature-specific cloud path, separate from simply saving a gallery capture. |
| AI-processed photo | The same FAQ says AI-processed photos are stored and used to improve Meta products and train Meta AI with trained reviewers. | This is the vendor’s stated practice. The applicable current privacy settings and policy govern the wearer’s product and region. |
Importing a gallery file to a phone, sharing a file, and submitting an image for AI analysis are distinct actions. A statement about one should not be read as a statement about the others. In particular, “gallery photos stay on the glasses until import or sharing” is not evidence that a visual question is answered locally.
The AI-data statement is also specific: it concerns photos processed with AI as described in the Ray-Ban FAQ. It should not be broadened into an unsupported claim that all photos, all audio, or every interaction across all products is retained or used in the same way. Check the product’s current privacy documentation and settings for the feature actually in use.

What “on-device,” “phone,” and “cloud” processing mean
These terms describe where a particular computing step takes place. A product can use more than one location in the same interaction: a microphone and camera are physically on the glasses, speech recognition may convert audio to text, a paired phone may provide connectivity or an interface, and a cloud model may interpret the image and prompt. The official Meta description establishes that a captured image and text prompt are passed to the AI model, but it does not establish that every part of the request runs in one place or provide a full component-by-component map.
- On the glasses: Processing occurs on the wearable itself. A gallery file stored on the glasses is an example of local storage, but local storage alone does not prove that AI analysis also happened locally.
- On a paired phone: The phone can be part of a device system, but the cited Meta visual-question descriptions do not specify which model computations, if any, run on the phone. Do not assume the phone is the AI processor just because it is paired.
- In the cloud: Data is sent off the wearable for processing by remote computing systems. Ray-Ban explicitly describes sending the visual-question photo to Meta’s cloud.
A cloud privacy safeguard does not change the location of the computation. Meta Engineering’s September 23, 2026 description of Private Processing says AI workloads run in confidential virtual machines and that the design extends a trust boundary into Meta’s data centers. Meta says this makes off-device data inaccessible to Meta during processing. That is Meta’s description of a confidential-computing approach, not evidence that the workload ran on the glasses or an independent audit conclusion.
When evaluating a claim that a feature is “private” or “on-device,” ask two separate questions: where is the computation performed, and what protections or handling rules apply there? Confidential computing addresses a stated protection for cloud processing; it does not turn a remote workload into local inference.

Raw images, saved media, and derived data are not interchangeable
Privacy descriptions can refer to different kinds of data. A raw camera image, a saved gallery photo, a speech transcript, a request sent to an AI model, and a measurement derived from a sensor are not the same thing. Retention rules for one category do not automatically describe another.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Google’s Android XR help page illustrates the distinction in a different product context: it covers headset perception tracking, not all AI glasses. Google says images of eyes, hands, and faces used for tracking are processed in real time and deleted, never stored on the device or sent to Google. It separately says eye and face measurements are stored on the device until deleted by factory reset. Thus, a statement that tracking images are deleted does not mean all information derived from those images is immediately deleted.
This example should not be used to infer how a camera-equipped pair of glasses handles photos or AI questions. It concerns specified tracking features in Android XR headsets. The useful lesson is to identify exactly which sensor, feature, data form, and device a privacy statement covers.

What capture indicators and user controls tell you
Meta says its glasses blink a white capture LED when content is captured for the gallery, and says the light has no off switch. Meta also says that on second-generation glasses, blocking the LED disables the camera until the light is unblocked. This is the company’s stated safeguard for gallery capture. It is not a universal description of other glasses, all sensors, or every pathway by which data may be transmitted.
Meta’s system card says users can turn voice controls off to decide whether to use Meta AI, manage privacy settings, and delete gallery media; Meta says deleting gallery media also deletes it from Meta’s cloud. The available controls and their effects may vary by software version and feature, so a setting’s label should be read in the context of the product’s current documentation. A control for voice activation, for instance, should not be assumed to disable every camera feature or delete an image already submitted for AI processing unless the documentation says so.

Also distinguish a capture indicator from a network indicator: the cited LED description signals gallery capture, not necessarily the status of every microphone, AI request, or cloud transfer.

A practical checklist for comparing AI-glasses privacy claims
There is no comprehensive market-wide comparison supported by the documented examples here. For two specific products, compare the same questions against each product’s official documentation rather than generalizing from one brand’s architecture.
- Trigger: Is voice input described as an invoked request, or does the documentation describe continuous sensing or another trigger?
- Processing location: Does the feature run on the glasses, a paired phone, a cloud service, or a combination? Which source supports that answer?
- Image path: Are saved gallery files handled differently from images submitted to an AI feature?
- Retention and use: What does the provider say about storage, product improvement, model training, and human review for the particular data involved?
- Indicators and controls: What signals capture or AI use, and which specific actions do the available settings enable, disable, or delete?
- Data type: Does a privacy claim cover raw sensor images, saved media, transcripts, derived measurements, or cloud computation?
- Scope: Does the statement apply to the exact model, software version, region, and feature? Is it documentation for a shipping product or a prototype?
These questions prevent a common comparison error: treating “camera data” as one category. A company may describe gallery storage, visual AI transfer, and sensor-derived tracking measurements in separate documents because they have different purposes and handling.
Prototype announcements are not shipping-product privacy policies
Google’s May 23, 2025 Android XR glasses post showed a prototype paired with Gemini. Google described a camera, microphones, speakers, and an optional in-lens display, and said it had begun gathering feedback from trusted testers. That dated demonstration establishes what Google showed at the time; it does not establish current retail availability or a complete data-handling policy for a shipping product.

A prototype’s hardware description cannot by itself answer questions about retention, cloud processing, reviewer access, or user controls.
What is established—and what is not
The documented Meta flow shows how a wearer’s spoken prompt can be transcribed, paired with a camera image, and sent to an AI model, with a response delivered through the app or glasses. The product FAQ distinguishes that cloud-based visual AI interaction from ordinary gallery storage and states that AI-processed photos are used to improve products and train Meta AI with trained reviewers. Meta separately describes Private Processing as confidential cloud computation. Google’s Android XR documentation provides a narrowly scoped example of real-time tracking images and on-device derived measurements, while its 2025 glasses announcement describes a prototype.
These sources do not establish a universal AI-glasses architecture, a market-wide recording policy, or an independent statistic about how often glasses transmit data or how accurately they process it. Mark Zuckerberg’s July 2025 statement in “Personal Superintelligence”—that context-aware glasses may become primary computing devices—is a company leader’s prediction, not a measured finding. For a particular pair of glasses, the decisive details remain its model, feature, software version, region, settings, and current privacy documentation.
