Short answer: Smart-glasses battery life, phone support and recording lights depend on the model. The clearest current official figures are for the original Ray-Ban Meta and Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, so this guide uses those products as its reference rather than implying that every smart-glasses brand works the same way.
The original model is rated for shorter use than Gen 2, both require the Meta AI phone app and a compatible handset, and an outward-facing white capture light is intended to signal when a photo or video is being recorded. Manufacturer estimates are expressed as “up to” figures and vary with workload, settings and other conditions.

How long does Ray-Ban Meta battery last?
Original Ray-Ban Meta
Ray-Ban’s current US FAQ rates a fully charged original pair for up to 4 hours of moderate use. Under the more demanding profile of continuous audio streaming with voice assistance, the same FAQ gives up to 3 hours. Those are separate workload estimates, not a promise that every owner will see either duration.
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2
The FAQ lists up to 8 hours for moderate use and up to 5 hours when audio streaming and voice assistance run continuously. Meta’s September 17, 2025 Gen 2 announcement also describes up to eight hours with typical use. “Typical” and “moderate” are not controlled test labels, so the announcement and FAQ should not be treated as a like-for-like benchmark.
Why recording can reduce the practical runtime
Video capture uses the camera, image processing, storage and wireless transfer features at the same time. The official pages reviewed do not quantify how many minutes of uninterrupted video either generation can record on one charge. If you need a hard figure for a recording-heavy day, the manufacturer material does not establish one; plan around your own pattern of short clips, standby time and access to the case instead of converting the moderate-use rating into a video promise.

Charging the glasses and case
Use the supplied charging case
The glasses charge inside their case rather than through a separate charging connector on the frame. Place both arms into the shaped contacts, close the case and connect the case to power as directed for your model. The case is central to day-to-day use because it both stores and recharges the glasses between sessions.

How long charging takes
The current FAQ says approximately 22 minutes reaches 50% and approximately 75 minutes reaches a full charge. Meta’s Gen 2 launch announcement gives a separate Gen 2 claim of 50% in 20 minutes. Keep the source and generation attached to each number: the two statements should not be blended into one universal charging specification.
Long-term storage
Ray-Ban’s safety and warranty guide warns that failing to fully recharge the battery every six months from the last use can cause permanent damage and leave the product inoperable. This is a storage-maintenance instruction, not a recommendation to wait six months between normal charges.
What phones work with Ray-Ban Meta glasses?
Setup requires the Meta AI app and a compatible smartphone. The minimum operating-system requirements listed by the Ray-Ban US FAQ are:
- Android 10 or later, with location services enabled.
- iOS 14.4 or later.
- Wireless internet access.
- A valid Meta account.
- The Meta AI app installed on the phone.
Meeting the operating-system minimum does not prove that every handset is supported. The FAQ points to a separate supported-phone list; check your exact model, carrier configuration and market before buying. Phone and app support can change with firmware and regional releases, so recheck the current list at the time you set up the glasses.

How pairing and Wi-Fi actually work
Bluetooth pairing is handled through the Meta AI app. Wi-Fi has two different roles that are easy to confuse:
- For ordinary operation, the app connects through your phone to your normal Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection.
- When you import photos or videos and install firmware updates, the glasses can create a temporary Wi-Fi network for the transfer.
That means a pairing problem is not always a simple “Wi-Fi is off” problem. Bluetooth, the phone’s internet connection, app permissions and the glasses’ temporary transfer network can each be involved.
Step-by-step setup checklist
- Confirm the phone. Check the operating-system minimum and verify your exact handset in Meta’s supported-phone list for your country.
- Install Meta AI. Download the current Meta AI app, sign in with a valid Meta account and allow the permissions it requests for Bluetooth, location and local-network or Wi-Fi functions.
- Charge both devices. Put the glasses in their case and give the case enough charge for setup and a firmware update.
- Enable Bluetooth and location. Android pairing requires location services according to the FAQ; keep Bluetooth enabled on either platform.
- Start pairing in the app. Follow the app’s add-device flow rather than pairing only from the phone’s system Bluetooth menu.
- Complete updates. Keep the glasses in range of the phone and connected to power while firmware installs. Interrupting an update can leave setup incomplete.
- Test a short capture and import. Confirm that the camera, capture light, speakers and file transfer work before relying on the glasses away from home.
Pairing and transfer problems: what to check
The app cannot find the glasses
- Confirm the glasses are powered on and seated correctly in the case before restarting pairing.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on, then reopen Meta AI.
- On Android, verify that location services are enabled and that the app has the required permission.
- Remove an old glasses entry from the phone’s Bluetooth settings only if the app’s own recovery flow does not resolve the connection; then start pairing again inside Meta AI.
Photos or videos will not import
Keep the phone connected to the internet and leave the glasses close to it. Importing uses the glasses’ temporary Wi-Fi network, so moving out of range, switching networks or denying local-network permissions can interrupt the transfer. Do not assume that Bluetooth alone carries every capture file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Firmware updates fail
Charge the case, keep the phone and glasses together, use a stable internet connection and retry from the app. If the app reports that the phone is unsupported, check the exact model list rather than relying only on the Android or iOS version.

How can you tell when the glasses are recording?
The outward-facing capture LED
Ray-Ban documentation distinguishes an inward-facing notification LED from a front-facing capture LED. The capture LED is intended to let people nearby know when a photo or video is being taken. The Ray-Ban FAQ describes one white blink for a photo and a solid white light while video is recording. Meta’s July 2026 AI-glasses FAQ describes the external white light as blinking briefly for a photo and continuing to blink for the duration of video capture. Because the wording differs between the pages, the dependable general rule is that an outward-facing white light signals capture; the precise pattern depends on the page and product behavior being described.
There is no user switch to turn it off
Meta states that “The capture LED has no off switch.” That is the manufacturer’s design statement, not an independent privacy certification. The light is intended as a visible signal, but visibility can vary with distance, angle and ambient light; it should not be described as impossible to miss.
Blocking or tampering with the indicator
Meta says that, beginning with the second generation, the camera is disabled if the system detects that the LED has been blocked. Its July 2026 FAQ also says Meta is updating the glasses to detect physical tampering or destruction. These are Meta’s stated safeguards. The cited material does not provide an independent audit or statistics showing how often detection succeeds.
Where captures are stored and when they are shared
According to Meta’s July 2026 FAQ, gallery photos and videos remain privately stored on the glasses until the wearer chooses to import them. After import, the files are saved in the phone’s gallery. Storage on the glasses and sharing from the phone are separate steps: importing does not by itself publish a clip, but anyone with access to the phone gallery or a subsequently shared file may be able to view it.

Before recording around other people, follow local consent, workplace and venue rules. The capture light is a device signal, not a substitute for permission where consent is required.
Original Ray-Ban Meta versus Gen 2: what actually differs
| Comparison point | Original Ray-Ban Meta | Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Moderate-use battery estimate | Up to 4 hours | Up to 8 hours |
| Continuous audio plus voice assistance | Up to 3 hours | Up to 5 hours |
| Case endurance claim | Not stated in the cited Gen 2 announcement | Additional 48 hours on the go, according to Meta’s September 17, 2025 announcement |
| 50% charging claim | About 22 minutes in the FAQ | About 22 minutes in the FAQ; 20 minutes in Meta’s Gen 2 announcement |
| Video detail in the cited material | Not specified | 3K Ultra HD, up to 60 fps, according to the September 17, 2025 announcement |
| Continuous video battery test | Not stated | Not stated |
This is a specification comparison, not a buying verdict. Current price, stock, fit, prescription-lens availability and regional features are not established by these battery and compatibility FAQs.
Water and everyday-care limits
The FAQ lists IPX4 water resistance. That rating does not make the glasses suitable for submersion or extended exposure to liquids. Keep them out of pools, showers and sustained heavy rain, and dry the case and charging contacts before charging if they become wet.
Before you rely on smart glasses for a day out
- Verify your exact phone model, operating system and market in the supported-phone list.
- Charge the glasses and case; do not infer recording runtime from the moderate-use estimate.
- Install Meta AI, complete pairing and apply firmware updates before leaving.
- Test a photo, a short video and an import to the phone gallery.
- Check that the front capture light is visible and unobstructed.
- Carry the case for recharging during long audio or camera sessions.
- Ask permission before recording people and follow venue rules.
- For storage longer than six months, fully recharge the battery at least once during that period.
The practical answer to the three core questions is therefore model-specific battery estimates, app-based phone compatibility that must be checked by exact handset, and an outward-facing capture light that Meta says cannot be switched off. Treat all runtime and safeguard figures as manufacturer statements, and verify current regional support before setup.
