The metaverse is a broad idea for digitally created worlds and experiences—not one place, app, or shared virtual universe you can enter today. Virtual worlds, immersive hardware, and the standards intended to help connect them already exist, but no cited standard establishes a seamless metaverse in which people can freely carry their identity and belongings everywhere.
What does “metaverse” mean?
The word is used as an umbrella term for persistent digital environments and experiences that may feel immersive, connect people socially, or relate to the physical world. IEEE Standards Association describes possible forms as a digital universe, an extension of the physical world, or a digital counterpart. It also says a metaverse “shall be persistent” and “should be massive, comprehensive, immersive, and self-consistent.” That is IEEE’s framing, not a universally binding definition. The term can therefore refer to different things in different contexts: a social virtual world, a game-like environment, an immersive work or viewing experience, or a digital representation connected to a real place or system. These examples may share technologies without being parts of one connected destination.

No single settled definition is established by the sources cited here. IEEE’s broad formulations encompass digital universes, extensions, and counterparts; a European Commission FAQ surfaced in the source set with a narrower description centered on an interoperable network of virtual worlds. Those are different framings, not evidence of a shared definition accepted by everyone.

It is useful to separate the vision from what exists: platforms can offer virtual environments and immersive features now, while the idea of a unified, interoperable network remains a goal rather than a description of how all platforms currently work.
How are VR, AR, MR, and digital twins related?
They are connected concepts, but they are not interchangeable terms for the metaverse.
- Virtual reality (VR) places a person inside a computer-generated environment, commonly using a headset and tracked controls or hands.
- Augmented reality (AR) overlays or adds digital content to a view of the physical world.
- Mixed reality (MR) blends digital content with the real environment so both can be present in the experience. Meta describes Horizon OS capabilities such as camera passthrough and spatial features; available functions vary by device. Meta Horizon OS
- A digital twin or counterpart is a digital representation associated with a physical object, place, or system. IEEE includes digital counterparts among the ways to frame digitally built environments.
These technologies may support metaverse-style experiences, but using VR, AR, or MR does not by itself make an experience part of a shared world.
Do I need a VR headset to use the metaverse?
No. A VR headset can provide an immersive experience, and some platform features depend on immersive hardware, but a headset is not a universal requirement. Web and screen-based experiences are also relevant ways to build and access virtual environments.

The W3C WebXR Device API describes how websites can access VR and AR devices, including sensors and head-mounted displays. The version published on 9 June 2026 is a Candidate Recommendation Draft, intended to become a Recommendation, and remains work in progress—not a final Recommendation. W3C WebXR Device API
For Meta Quest application development, Meta says OpenXR is the only supported API for new applications on its platform. OpenXR provides a common interface between an application and supported headsets; it does not make worlds, accounts, or digital goods portable between platforms. Meta OpenXR documentation
Before choosing an experience, check its supported device, browser, and input method. Meta’s Horizon OS documentation notes that capabilities—including controller and hand tracking, passthrough, and spatial audio—vary by device. WebXR feature detection is likewise relevant to web experiences. Meta WebXR overview

ITU-T work item H.770.1, approved on 14 December 2025, identifies four areas for metaverse interoperability: avatars, assets, content, and identity. It sets out service scenarios and high-level requirements, showing that these are areas standards work is addressing—not that users can already transfer everything freely across platforms. WebXR and OpenXR address different technical layers: WebXR lets web content access immersive-device capabilities, while OpenXR provides an application-to-headset API. Neither standard alone connects virtual-world economies, accounts, or libraries of digital items.

The cited standards and technical documentation do not provide a named, dated population or usage study, so they cannot support a reliable global user count or growth rate. Be cautious with a figure unless its publisher defines what it counts—such as headset owners, monthly users of a particular service, or people who have tried any virtual environment—and gives a date and method.

Quick Recap
- Access: Does it work in a browser or on a screen, or does it require a VR or mixed-reality headset?
- Compatibility: Which devices, browsers, controllers, and tracking features are supported? Check the platform’s current documentation because capabilities can vary by device.
- Portability: Can you use the same identity, avatar, assets, or content elsewhere? Verify each category separately instead of assuming that “interoperable” means everything transfers.
- Purpose: Is the experience for social presence, games, immersive viewing, work, or something else? The sources cited here do not rank platforms by quality or adoption.
