For everyday sign-in to a personal Windows 11 PC, a Windows Hello PIN is a sensible choice if you can protect the device and keep account recovery methods current. It is tied to that device and is different from your Microsoft account password. Choosing a PIN does not erase the password: you may still need it for recovery or other account uses.
How a Windows Hello PIN differs from a password
A Windows Hello PIN is associated with one device, according to Microsoft’s Windows Hello guidance. Your Microsoft account password is a separate credential. The PIN is for signing in on that device; it is not simply the same password in a shorter form.

That distinction matters if you are weighing the consequences of a credential being exposed. A password reused across services can put those other accounts at risk if it is compromised. A device-associated PIN does not serve as that same reusable account password. Still, these differences in scope do not establish that one method is universally safer: the official guidance describes how the credentials work, not a controlled head-to-head security test.

Choose a PIN for routine use on a personal PC
A PIN is a practical default when you regularly use one Windows 11 device, can keep it physically protected, and know how you will recover access to your account. Windows Hello setup and management are in Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Windows Hello options include a PIN, face recognition, and fingerprint recognition; face and fingerprint require compatible hardware. See Microsoft’s Windows Hello instructions.

Keep the password available for account access and recovery
Do not treat the PIN as a replacement for knowing how to access or recover your account. Microsoft documents password reset steps for Microsoft and local accounts, and the available route differs by account type. If you choose a password to sign in, avoid reusing it on other services.
Consider your recovery situation before changing sign-in options
The right choice depends partly on whether you can recover access if you forget a credential. Confirm that you can access the relevant account recovery options before relying on a single sign-in method. The PIN reset path differs for Microsoft accounts and local accounts.

Can you make Windows use only Windows Hello?
On a device signed in with a Microsoft account, Windows offers an option to allow only Windows Hello sign-in for that account on that device. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and turn on For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device. Microsoft says the option is available only for Microsoft accounts; when enabled, the password sign-in option is removed from that device and you use Windows Hello face, fingerprint, or PIN. Details are in Microsoft’s passwordless sign-in guidance.

- At the sign-in screen, look for “I forgot my PIN.” Microsoft documents this option for Microsoft accounts, not local accounts.
- If that option is unavailable, sign in with your password. Then open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and reset the PIN.
- If you cannot sign in with the password, use the reset route for your account type. Microsoft documents separate procedures for Microsoft and local account passwords. Follow the relevant steps in Microsoft’s PIN change and reset guidance.
Other Windows sign-in options
Windows lists several sign-in methods, and which settings appear can depend on device configuration. See Microsoft’s sign-in options overview for the available choices.

A FIDO2-compatible physical security key is a separate option, not a requirement for using a PIN. Microsoft documents Microsoft-account sign-in with USB and NFC security keys. Check that a key is compatible with the account and service you intend to use before relying on it. See Microsoft’s security key instructions.
