What kind of field is Jackdaw?

A gas-condensate reservoir

Jackdaw is classified as a gas-condensate field. Its reservoir is expected to produce primarily natural gas, together with condensate: a light hydrocarbon liquid that separates from the gas as pressure and temperature change during production and processing. That classification matters because the project needs both a gas-export route and facilities able to handle the associated liquids. It is different from an oil field and from an onshore gas storage site.

Discovery and appraisal

The field was discovered in 2005. Appraisal drilling and related work took place between 2007 and 2012, according to the official environmental-statement summary. Appraisal is the stage used to establish the reservoir’s extent, quality and likely production characteristics after an initial discovery. The development concept and production projections therefore rest on several years of subsurface evaluation rather than on a single exploration well.

Where is Jackdaw in the North Sea?

UKCS blocks and the Central North Sea

The field occupies three adjacent UKCS areas: Blocks 30/02a, 30/03a and 30/02d. UKCS block numbers are part of the licensing and mapping system used to identify offshore acreage; they are not postal addresses. On a North Sea map, the blocks place Jackdaw in the Central North Sea, among established oil-and-gas infrastructure and fields.

Coordinates and water depth

Adura’s published notice gives the proposed wellhead-platform position as 56°54′01.37″N, 02°22′45.45″E. The site is in approximately 78 metres of water. That is shallow enough for a fixed wellhead structure, while still requiring offshore foundations, subsea flowlines, marine logistics and remote operations.

Relationship to Aberdeen and Shearwater

From Aberdeen, the field is roughly 250 km to the east. The proposed installation is about 30 km south-east of the Shearwater platform, an existing North Sea production hub. Jackdaw also sits adjacent to the UK/Norway median line, the maritime boundary used to divide the two countries’ continental-shelf areas. Being near that line does not mean the field is in Norwegian waters: the cited blocks and project record place the development on the UKCS side.

How the proposed Jackdaw development would work

A normally unattended wellhead platform

The planned concept is a not-permanently-attended wellhead platform, often abbreviated to NPAI or normally unattended installation in offshore projects. It would contain the wellheads and equipment needed to control production, but it would not be occupied continuously by a full-time crew. Personnel would visit for inspection, maintenance, intervention and other scheduled work, with remote monitoring and control supporting routine operation.

The concept calls for four production wells. Wells are drilled into the reservoir from the platform; completion equipment then controls the flow of gas and condensate into the production system. The four-well design is a project plan, not a statement that four wells are already producing.

A subsea connection to Shearwater

An approximately 31 km subsea pipeline is intended to connect Jackdaw’s wellhead platform to the existing Shearwater hub. The line would carry production across the seabed rather than requiring Jackdaw to have its own full processing complex. Subsea tiebacks of this kind can use capacity and utilities already present at a nearby hub, although they still require engineering, installation, inspection and integrity management along the route.

Processing at Shearwater and export to shore

Under the proposed arrangement, Shearwater would receive and process Jackdaw’s fluids. After processing, the gas would be sent onshore through the Fulmar Gas Line to the St Fergus Gas Plant in Scotland. In practical terms, the chain is:

  1. Four wells produce gas and condensate at the Jackdaw wellhead platform.
  2. The production stream travels through the planned subsea pipeline to Shearwater.
  3. Shearwater performs the hub processing and prepares the gas for export.
  4. The processed gas flows through the Fulmar Gas Line.
  5. St Fergus Gas Plant receives the gas onshore for treatment and entry into the UK gas system.

This arrangement explains why Jackdaw’s location is described in relation to Shearwater and St Fergus, rather than as a standalone processing site.

How large could Jackdaw be?

Shell UK’s published production projection

Shell UK stated in 2022 that Jackdaw could account for around 6.5% of UKCS gas production at peak and provide an energy equivalent to heating more than 1.4 million UK homes. Those are projected contributions attributed to Shell UK, not measurements of current output. “At peak” refers to the expected high point of production during the project’s operating life; it should not be read as a permanent share of UK gas supply.

The homes-equivalent figure is also an energy comparison, not a promise that the field would directly supply those households or that every unit of gas would be delivered to domestic customers. Actual production would depend on reservoir performance, well and facility availability, commissioning, operating conditions and regulatory approval.

What the figure does and does not tell you

  • It indicates the scale claimed for Jackdaw within UKCS production, rather than the field’s physical size alone.
  • It is not a recent production statistic because the project has not been described as an established producing field in the cited materials.
  • It does not establish how long the peak level would last.
  • It should not be compared directly with another field unless the same production basis, date and measurement are used.

Who is developing Jackdaw?

The corporate structure changed

The updated environmental assessment says a Shell–Equinor transaction formed Adura. Following consent from the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) to assign the relevant interests on 1 October 2025, UK North Sea Limited became the Jackdaw developer for the environmental-statement process from 1 November 2025.

A later Adura notice identifies Adura Operations Limited in the project application. These references describe different parts of the project’s evolving corporate and application structure. They should not be collapsed into a single undated ownership label: the assignment date and the company named in a particular regulatory notice determine which entity is being referred to.

Why names in older documents may differ

Environmental documents from 2021–2022 refer to Shell and an earlier project schedule. Later material reflects the Adura transaction and the 2025 assignment. If you are reading a map, environmental statement or consultation response, check its publication date and the applicant name shown on that document before assuming that an older company reference describes the current developer.

What is the current regulatory status?

The UK government’s project record currently labels the Jackdaw Field Development matter “Under Review.” The record lists requests for further information and responses from the developer continuing into 2026. “Under Review” is a procedural status, not an approval and not a rejection. It means the relevant government process has not reached a final decision in the latest update described here.

The status also explains why a project can have a detailed field concept, platform coordinates and a proposed pipeline while still lacking certainty that construction and production will proceed exactly as described. Environmental assessment, regulatory questions, developer responses and any subsequent decision remain part of the project’s path.

Why the location matters to the project

Existing infrastructure reduces the need for a new export system

Jackdaw’s proximity to Shearwater is central to its design. A tieback to an operating hub can avoid building a separate long-distance export route and a new onshore receiving terminal. It also means the project depends on the technical and commercial compatibility of Jackdaw fluids with Shearwater processing and on the continued availability of the linked export infrastructure.

The field is offshore but relatively close to established North Sea routes

At about 78 metres deep and roughly 250 km from Aberdeen, Jackdaw is a conventional offshore development location rather than a deepwater project far from existing UK infrastructure. The distance still creates practical requirements: heavy-lift and installation vessels, helicopter or marine access, weather planning, subsea inspection and emergency-response arrangements all have to be designed for a remote offshore site.

Being near the median line requires precise mapping

The UK–Norway median line is a geographic and legal reference, not a description of the project’s export destination. Jackdaw’s listed UKCS blocks identify the licensing side of the development. Accurate block boundaries, well coordinates, pipeline routing and crossing permissions are important because a small mapping error can place infrastructure in the wrong jurisdiction or suggest a different field than the one under review.

How to identify Jackdaw in maps and documents

  1. Look for the Central North Sea rather than an onshore location.
  2. Check that the map labels UKCS Blocks 30/02a, 30/03a and 30/02d.
  3. Use the approximate reference point of 56°54′01.37″N, 02°22′45.45″E for the proposed wellhead platform.
  4. Confirm that Shearwater appears roughly 30 km to the north-west, described in project material as the nearby host hub.
  5. Distinguish Jackdaw’s platform from the 31 km subsea pipeline, the Shearwater processing facilities and the St Fergus onshore terminal.
  6. Check the document date and applicant name, because the corporate references changed after the 1 October 2025 NSTA assignment consent.

What Jackdaw is not

  • It is not a gas plant at St Fergus; St Fergus is the planned onshore receiving and processing destination for exported gas.
  • It is not the Shearwater field or platform; Shearwater is the proposed host hub for processing Jackdaw production.
  • It is not a currently observed 6.5% share of UKCS output; that number is a Shell UK projection for peak production.
  • It is not an approved producing development simply because an environmental statement and project application exist; the latest government record remains under review.

Bottom line for readers

Jackdaw is a proposed UK Central North Sea gas-condensate development in Blocks 30/02a, 30/03a and 30/02d. Its proposed platform would stand in about 78 metres of water, approximately 250 km east of Aberdeen and 30 km south-east of Shearwater, near the UK–Norway median line. Four wells would feed a roughly 31 km subsea pipeline to Shearwater, where the fluids would be processed before gas moved through the Fulmar Gas Line to St Fergus. The project’s scale figures are projections, its corporate records reflect a 2025 assignment and Adura structure, and its latest government status is still “Under Review.”
