What does “iPhone 17 Pro Max” mean?
“iPhone 17 Pro Max” is the name of a specific Apple smartphone model, not a separate technical category. “17” identifies its generation, while “Pro Max” is Apple’s name for the larger-screen model in the Pro lineup. Apple announced it on September 9, 2025; preorders began September 12, and availability began September 19, 2025. What are its main features?
Design and display
Apple specifies an aluminum unibody in Silver, Cosmic Orange, or Deep Blue, with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back. The all-screen OLED display measures 6.9 inches diagonally and has a 2868 × 1320 resolution at 460 pixels per inch, with ProMotion refresh rates up to 120 Hz. Because of rounded corners, Apple says the screen measures 6.86 inches diagonally as a standard rectangle; the actual viewable area is smaller.
Chip and cameras
The phone uses Apple’s A19 Pro chip, with a 6-core CPU, 6-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine. Its rear camera system consists of three 48MP Fusion cameras: Main, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto. Apple specifies 4× telephoto at 100 mm and 8× optical-quality zoom at 200 mm, with a 16× optical-quality zoom range. The front camera is an 18MP Center Stage camera.

Apple’s launch materials also describe Dual Capture, 4K HDR front-camera video, and professional video features including ProRes RAW, Log 2, and genlock. Some functions depend on Apple or third-party software support. These are manufacturer-announced capabilities, not independent test results.
Storage and battery
Apple lists 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage options. Its specifications state up to 39 hours of video playback or up to 35 hours of streamed video playback. Apple also states that the phone can reach up to 50% charge in 20 minutes using a 40W-or-higher adapter and USB-C cable, or in 30 minutes using a 30W-or-higher adapter and MagSafe Charger. These are Apple’s stated conditions; the charging equipment is sold separately.

What varies by market or date?
- Weight: Apple’s U.S. English support specification lists 233 g. Regional Apple specifications have listed 231 g, so check the specification for the market and model you are buying.
- SIM: In its September 2025 announcement, Apple identified eSIM-only versions for Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the U.S., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Apple said eSIM was supported by more than 500 carriers worldwide. Confirm local model and carrier compatibility before purchase.
- Price: Apple announced a U.S. launch starting price of $1,199 in 2025. That is historical launch pricing, not a confirmed current price.
Apple also said eSIM-only versions have a larger battery and two additional hours of video playback. This is a dated manufacturer claim; it should not be assumed to describe every regional model or a measured result.

Is the iPhone 17 Pro Max waterproof?
No phone should be described as waterproof based on its rating. Apple specifies an IP68 rating under IEC 60529, with a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under its stated conditions. Treat this as a water- and dust-resistance rating, not a guarantee against liquid damage.

How to identify the right model
When comparing listings or checking compatibility, use the exact model name and verify the details that matter for your purchase:
- Confirm that the listing says iPhone 17 Pro Max, not iPhone 17 Pro or another generation.
- Check storage capacity, color, and the device’s dimensions and weight for your market.
- Confirm whether the local version uses eSIM only and whether your carrier supports it.
- Check that cases and other accessories specifically support iPhone 17 Pro Max.
For reference, Apple’s U.S. English support page lists dimensions of 163.4 mm high, 78.0 mm wide, and 8.75 mm deep. These market-specific specifications can help distinguish it from other models.
