Ultimate Ironman (UIM) is the hardest official Old School RuneScape account mode. It keeps every Ironman restriction and permanently removes bank access, so your inventory and a small set of specialised containers become your long-term storage. If community-made rulesets count, Extreme Onechunk Ironman is usually the more restrictive challenge: you must exhaust a large completion checklist in one map chunk before unlocking another. Hardcore Ironman adds the most severe single failure condition—a death in a non-safe activity ends the account—but it still has a bank, so “hardest” depends on whether you value logistics, permanent risk or geographic restriction.
There are two defensible answers to “hardest”
Old School RuneScape (OSRS) does not publish a universal difficulty ranking for challenge accounts. The answer changes with the definition you use.

- Hardest official account mode: Ultimate Ironman (UIM), because it combines all Ironman restrictions with “no bank, ever.”
- Hardest widely known community ruleset: Extreme Onechunk Ironman, which layers Ironman restrictions onto a self-imposed requirement to complete an extensive checklist inside one map chunk before moving on.
- Most severe death consequence: Hardcore Ironman, where dying during a non-safe activity permanently removes Hardcore status and makes the account no longer playable under the official rule.
These are different kinds of difficulty. UIM is a permanent inventory-management problem, Hardcore is a high-stakes survival problem, and Extreme Onechunk is a geographic progression and completion problem. No authoritative source supplies completion times, failure rates or player-population data that could turn those dimensions into one objective ranking.

Jagex describes Ironman as earning progress without trading, outside experience or ordinary multiplayer assistance. Its official Ironman guide states that the mode is about “earning everything with blood, sweat and tears.” The baseline restrictions include:

Those rules mean an Ironman must obtain equipment, supplies, experience and quest prerequisites through the account’s own activities. They apply to ordinary Ironman, Hardcore Ironman and UIM; the variants differ in what happens when you die, how you store items and—under community rulesets—where you are allowed to progress.
Why Ultimate Ironman is the hardest official mode
No bank access at any point
The defining UIM rule is permanent: “No bank, ever.” A UIM account keeps every Ironman restriction and cannot use a bank for routine storage. You cannot bank a valuable drop, leave supplies for a future quest or keep a wardrobe of spare equipment in the usual way. Inventory slots become a progression resource that must be planned as carefully as levels and money.
Limited containers replace a bank—but do not recreate one
The current UIM guide identifies specialised storage that can hold particular categories of items. Examples include looting bags, rune pouches, seed boxes, fish barrels, herb sacks, clue boxes and storage in a player-owned house. Each container has its own purpose and limits; none provides a general-purpose bank interface.

As a result, a UIM player has to decide whether an item is worth occupying a permanent slot, whether a future activity can supply it again, and when to convert or discard materials. A quest that is routine for a standard Ironman can become a logistics exercise because the required tools, food, runes and quest items may compete for the same inventory space.
Death can be used as temporary storage
UIM progression includes a deliberate technique commonly called deathbanking. After a non-Wilderness death, tradeable items can remain in a death pile for 30 minutes. Players may use that window to perform activities that would otherwise require more slots, then return and recover the pile. The mechanic is temporary, time-limited and dependent on the circumstances of the death; it is not a replacement for a bank and should not be treated as permanent insurance.
What UIM difficulty feels like in practice
- Every pickup has an opportunity cost: a drop can be useful but still impossible to keep without destroying or consuming something else.
- Preparation is multi-stage: a plan must cover storage containers, teleports, tools, food, runes and the order in which items are obtained.
- Progress is less reversible: discarding a quest item or a rare resource can force another acquisition trip.
- Routine travel becomes planning: moving between activities while carrying the right supplies is part of the challenge, not background administration.
Because the restriction is built into the game mode rather than invented by an individual creator, UIM is the clearest answer when the question is specifically about the hardest official OSRS account.

Is UIM harder than Hardcore Ironman?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer because the modes punish different mistakes.
| Dimension | Ultimate Ironman | Hardcore Ironman |
|---|---|---|
| Official status | Official Jagex account mode | Official Jagex account mode |
| Ironman restrictions | All standard Ironman restrictions | All standard Ironman restrictions |
| Bank access | Never; inventory and limited containers are the permanent-storage system | Normal bank access remains available |
| Death consequence | UIM storage and item-recovery rules apply; the account is not defined by a one-life rule | A death in a non-safe activity ends Hardcore status and, under Jagex’s stated rule, the account is no longer playable |
| Main source of difficulty | Inventory space, storage sequencing and logistics | Avoiding one fatal mistake during non-safe content |
Hardcore Ironman has the harsher single-event penalty. A player can lose an account that took months or years to build through one death in a non-safe activity. UIM, however, imposes friction on almost every stage of progression, even when the character is not in immediate danger. A player who is comfortable with risk but dislikes inventory management may find UIM harder; a player who can organise supplies but cannot tolerate permanent death may find Hardcore harder.
The official Hardcore rule is precise: after a death in a non-safe in-game activity, the account “will no longer be playable.” The distinction matters because not every in-game situation is classified as non-safe. Players should check the current game’s safe-activity rules before treating any death as harmless.

What Extreme Onechunk Ironman means
Extreme Onechunk Ironman is not a Jagex account mode. It is a community-defined ruleset applied to an Ironman account. The account begins in one chosen map chunk—a contiguous region used by the challenge—and cannot simply travel anywhere to obtain upgrades. Before unlocking another chunk, the player must complete the required work in the current one.
Verf’s 2024 description lists five core requirements for each chunk:
Recommended Free Tools
- Complete the highest-level skilling challenges available there, including skillcapes. This can require reaching the relevant skill’s highest milestone even when the chunk offers only narrow training methods.
- Complete all available achievement diary tasks and quests. “Available” is determined by the chosen chunk and the ruleset’s interpretation of prerequisites and access.
- Obtain every unique monster drop. The player must pursue distinct drops from monsters accessible in the chunk rather than stopping after obtaining a convenient combat upgrade.
- Obtain every unique item in the chunk. This broadens the checklist beyond monster loot to other unique obtainable items defined by the challenge.
- Obtain every unique minigame reward. Any minigame reward considered available under the rules must be collected before progression.
Only after the checklist is satisfied can the player “roll” or otherwise unlock the next chunk according to the creator’s rules. The result is a progression path determined by geography and completion requirements, not by the normal game’s fastest route through quests and bosses.

Why the rules can differ between series
Extreme Onechunk has no central Jagex rules document. Edge cases—such as what counts as a unique item, how to handle an item technically obtainable only through another region, or whether an optional grind is required—can vary by creator and community agreement. Treat a specific series’ written rulebook as authoritative for that series, and do not describe every Onechunk account as following one legally fixed standard.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Official modes versus community challenge rules
| Account or ruleset | Official? | Trading and Grand Exchange | Storage | Death or progression condition | Geographic restriction |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ironman | Yes | No player trading; no Grand Exchange trades except bonds; other Ironman limits apply | Normal bank | Standard game death rules | None imposed by the mode |
| Hardcore Ironman | Yes | Ironman restrictions | Normal bank | Death in a non-safe activity makes the account no longer playable under Jagex’s rule | None imposed by the mode |
| Ultimate Ironman | Yes | Ironman restrictions | No bank; inventory plus limited containers and player-owned-house storage | UIM item and death-recovery rules; no one-life requirement defines the mode | None imposed by the mode |
| Extreme Onechunk Ironman | No; community ruleset | Usually the underlying Ironman restrictions | Depends on the underlying account; the Onechunk rule itself is geographic | Depends on whether the player also chooses Hardcore or UIM rules | Must finish the prescribed checklist before unlocking another chunk |
Extreme Onechunk can therefore be combined conceptually with other restrictions, but a particular creator must state exactly which combinations are allowed. “Onechunk” alone does not automatically mean UIM or Hardcore.
How to choose the challenge that is hardest for you
Choose UIM if logistics are the point
Pick UIM when you want every upgrade, quest and training session to involve storage decisions. Before starting a long grind, map out which containers can hold the resulting items and which supplies must remain in the inventory. The mode is best for players who enjoy sequencing, permanent trade-offs and solving constrained preparation problems.

Pick Hardcore when the central appeal is protecting one life. Treat unfamiliar bosses, quests and minigames as research problems before attempting them on the account. Keep the Hardcore status distinction in mind: the defining failure is death in a non-safe activity, not simply any loss of hitpoints or any interaction with dangerous content.
Choose Extreme Onechunk if completion and geography are the point
Pick Extreme Onechunk when you want the map itself to dictate the order of progression. Select a starting chunk with a written checklist, record every available quest, diary task, skilling milestone, monster drop, unique item and minigame reward, and agree in advance how ambiguous cases will be judged. Without that written agreement, two players can use the same name while following materially different rules.
Common misunderstandings
- “UIM can use a bank for emergencies.” No. The defining rule is no bank access ever; limited containers and temporary death piles are different mechanics.
- “Hardcore is automatically harder than UIM.” Hardcore has the most severe one-death consequence, while UIM creates continuous storage constraints. Difficulty depends on the dimension being measured.
- “Extreme Onechunk is an official account type.” It is a community ruleset layered on an Ironman account, with creator-specific interpretations.
- “Onechunk only means staying in one area.” The defining requirement is completing the specified checklist before unlocking the next chunk, not merely refusing to teleport outside the area.
- “There is a proven ranking by hours or deaths.” No authoritative figures establish completion hours, failure rates or player populations for these challenge types, so numerical rankings would be speculative.
Bottom line
For an official OSRS mode, choose Ultimate Ironman: it combines Ironman’s self-sufficiency with permanent removal of the bank and forces inventory logistics throughout the account’s life. For a community challenge that can be stricter still, Extreme Onechunk Ironman requires an exhaustive local checklist—skilling, diaries, quests, unique drops, unique items and minigame rewards—before each new map chunk. Hardcore Ironman is the most unforgiving when a single non-safe death matters, but it retains normal banking. The most accurate answer is therefore conditional: UIM is the hardest official mode, while Extreme Onechunk is the harsher self-imposed progression ruleset.
