Sensex and Nifty 50 are India’s two headline stock-market benchmarks, but they are not the same index. Sensex tracks 30 large, liquid and financially sound companies listed on BSE. Nifty 50 tracks 50 diversified companies listed on NSE across 13 sectors. Both use a free-float (float-adjusted) market-capitalisation method, yet they differ in exchange universe, constituent count, sector mix, base date, base value and review process.
The practical consequence is important: a Sensex reading of 80,000 cannot be judged as “higher” or “better” than a Nifty 50 reading of 25,000. Their point scales began at different times and values. Compare percentage returns over the same dates, and match a price index with a price index or a total-return index with a total-return index.

BSE Index Services describes the BSE SENSEX as “India’s most tracked bellwether index” and says it is designed to measure 30 of the largest, most liquid and financially sound BSE-listed companies across key sectors. NSE Indices describes Nifty 50 as a diversified 50-stock index representing important sectors of the economy.

Sensex is BSE’s flagship equity benchmark. Its 30 constituents are selected to represent large and actively traded companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange. The selection emphasizes size, liquidity and financial soundness rather than simply choosing the 30 companies with the highest share prices.

Because it contains 30 stocks, a single company can have a meaningful effect on the index when its free-float market value is large. Sensex is therefore a concise indicator of how major BSE-listed companies are performing, not a complete measure of every listed Indian business or every segment of the economy.
The index’s first value date was 3 April 1979, when its base value was set at 100. It was launched as an index on 2 January 1986. Those historical conventions allow the index to express long-term change as an index level, but they also make its points incomparable with an index that started from another date and base.
What the Nifty 50 measures
Nifty 50 is NSE’s principal large-cap benchmark. It contains 50 companies selected under NSE Indices’ eligibility and maintenance rules and is diversified across 13 sectors. The broader basket gives it more constituents than Sensex, although it still represents the large-cap end of the market rather than all NSE-listed shares.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNSE India reports that Nifty 50 represented about 53.73% of the free-float market capitalisation of NSE-listed stocks on 30 March 2026. That percentage is a dated coverage statistic, not a permanent feature: market values, constituent membership and index rules can change.
Nifty 50’s base date is 3 November 1995 and its base value is 1,000. The index therefore has a different numerical scale from Sensex before any difference in market performance is considered.
How free-float market-cap weighting works
Both benchmarks belong to the market-capitalisation-weighted family, with an adjustment for free float. Market capitalisation is a company’s share price multiplied by its relevant share count. A free-float adjustment removes, or reduces the influence of, holdings that are not realistically available for ordinary public trading, such as promoter, controlling or otherwise restricted stakes.
In practice, the largest companies with the greatest freely tradable value receive the largest index weights. If a heavily weighted constituent rises, it can lift the benchmark even when several smaller constituents fall. Conversely, a decline in a high-weight company can pull the index down while many lower-weight stocks rise.

Free-float weighting makes the indexes more representative of capital that public investors can actually trade than an unadjusted full-market-cap measure would be. It does not make every constituent equally influential, and it does not eliminate concentration in a few very large companies.
Why Sensex and Nifty 50 show different points
Their levels differ for structural reasons, not because one exchange is automatically performing better.
- Different starting dates: Sensex uses a first value date of 3 April 1979, while Nifty 50 starts from 3 November 1995.
- Different base values: Sensex began at 100; Nifty 50 began at 1,000.
- Different constituent sets: The 30 BSE constituents and 50 NSE constituents do not have identical membership or weights.
- Different trading universes: Each index is built from its exchange’s eligible listings and prices.
- Different reviews and adjustments: Rebalancing changes membership and weights at different times under each administrator’s rules.
For these reasons, comparing “80,000” with “25,000” as if the larger number represented a larger return is meaningless. Index points are accounting units tied to each index’s own base convention.
How to compare their performance correctly
Start both series on the same date and calculate percentage change:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Percentage return = (ending level − starting level) ÷ starting level × 100
Use the same type of return series on both sides. The commonly reported Nifty 50 is a price index, which reflects changes in constituent prices but excludes dividends. Nifty 50 Total Returns (TR) assumes dividends are reinvested. A price-index comparison with a total-return series would credit dividends to only one side and distort the result.
For an investment-performance comparison, use a comparable total-return series for each benchmark when available. For a discussion of quoted market levels or daily news moves, price indexes are the usual reference. State the start date, end date and whether the calculation is price return or total return so readers know exactly what is being compared.

Constituents, sectors and concentration
Thirty versus 50 companies
Sensex’s 30-stock structure is more compact. Each large constituent can make a noticeable contribution to the index’s daily movement. Nifty 50’s 50-stock structure spreads exposure across more companies, but its free-float weighting still means the biggest members dominate more than the smallest members.
Sector breadth
Nifty 50 is explicitly diversified across 13 sectors. Sensex is also intended to cover key sectors through its selection of major BSE companies, but the two baskets need not assign the same weight to banking, information technology, energy, consumer businesses, industrials or other industries at any point in time.
Why sector differences matter
If one sector rallies and another lags, the benchmark with the larger weight in the stronger sector can outperform. This is a composition effect, not evidence that the index methodology is malfunctioning. Sector weights move as share prices change and are also affected when constituents enter or leave during reviews.
Reviews, rebalancing and index maintenance
Sensex is reconstituted semiannually, in June and December. A review can replace a company, alter constituent weights or reflect changes in eligibility and free-float information. Such maintenance keeps the basket aligned with its stated large-cap and liquidity objectives, but it also means the exact 30-stock portfolio is not permanent.
Nifty 50 constituent and methodology reviews operate under NSE Indices rules. The timing and outcome of a review can differ from Sensex’s schedule. A company can therefore be added to one benchmark, removed from another, or remain in both with different weights.

They can also create short-term buying or selling flows around the effective date, although the index itself remains a measurement tool rather than an investment account.
Liquidity and exchange differences
Sensex is calculated from eligible BSE-listed companies, while Nifty 50 is calculated from eligible NSE-listed companies. Many large Indian companies are listed on both exchanges, but the index rules, exchange prices, eligibility screens and constituent lists remain distinct.

Liquidity is part of the selection logic. A liquid stock generally has enough regular trading activity for its quoted price to be more useful as a market signal and for index-linked products to transact more efficiently. Liquidity does not guarantee that a stock will rise, nor does it protect an index from a fall in its largest members.

Common mistakes to avoid
Treating the point levels as a ranking
A higher displayed number does not mean a higher return. Base values and dates differ.
Assuming the indexes contain the same companies
Some companies may appear in both, but membership is not identical and weights can differ.
Ignoring dividends
A price index omits dividends. Use a total-return series when evaluating the wealth created by reinvested distributions.

Calling either index the whole Indian market
Both are large-cap benchmarks. They do not represent every listed company, smaller companies, unlisted businesses or all investable assets.
Best Value
Assuming more constituents means equal diversification
Nifty 50 has 50 stocks, but free-float market-cap weighting still gives the largest companies the greatest influence.
How readers can use the benchmarks
Investors and journalists use Sensex and Nifty 50 to describe market direction, compare a portfolio with a large-cap benchmark, evaluate index funds and interpret derivatives or other products tied to the indexes. Analysts may also examine sector contributions and constituent-level attribution to explain why one benchmark moved differently from the other on a particular day.
When reporting a move, identify the index, the observation period and the return type. “Nifty 50 rose 1% over the session” describes a short-term price-index move; it does not state the investor’s total return after dividends, fees, taxes or tracking differences.
Bottom line
Sensex is BSE’s 30-company, float-adjusted benchmark, while Nifty 50 is NSE’s 50-company, free-float-weighted benchmark spanning 13 sectors. Their different exchange universes, membership, weights, review arrangements and base conventions explain why their quoted levels and returns can diverge. Compare percentage changes over identical dates, and use matching price or total-return series before deciding what the difference means for your portfolio or analysis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the same company be included in both Sensex and Nifty 50?
Yes. A company may meet the eligibility requirements for both exchange-specific indexes, but its weight and the surrounding constituent mix can differ in each benchmark.
Does Nifty 50 include dividends?
The commonly quoted Nifty 50 is a price index and excludes dividends. Nifty 50 Total Returns includes reinvested dividends, so check the series name before comparing performance.
Are Sensex and Nifty 50 suitable measures of every Indian stock?
No. Both are large-cap benchmarks. They are useful market references but do not cover all listed companies, smaller stocks or every asset class.
