Consolidated quarterly results combine the parent with the subsidiaries it controls and present them as one economic entity.
Consolidated figures are generally the better measure of group-wide revenue, operating performance, leverage, cash generation and segment mix. Standalone figures answer a different question: how the parent itself earned, borrowed, owned assets, generated cash and may be able to distribute funds. Investors often need both views, particularly when subsidiaries are material or when debt and cash sit in different entities.

What standalone quarterly results mean
Standalone results cover the parent company, or another individual legal entity, on its own. The income statement contains that entity’s direct revenue, expenses and profit. Its balance sheet contains its own assets, liabilities and equity, while its cash-flow statement reports cash generated and used by that entity.
A parent does not normally replace its subsidiaries’ underlying assets and liabilities with those items in standalone accounts. Instead, it reports its investment in subsidiaries under the policy allowed by the applicable accounting framework. Depending on that framework and the entity’s stated policy, investments may be carried at cost, under IFRS 9, or using the equity method.

Standalone reporting therefore can look very different from the business activity taking place across the wider group. A holding company may have little direct sales revenue but substantial investments in subsidiaries, loans to group companies or financing costs on debt raised at the parent level.
Separate financial statements under IAS 27
IAS 27 describes separate financial statements as statements of a parent or subsidiary presented for that entity by itself. They are commonly provided in addition to consolidated financial statements when a parent controls subsidiaries. The exact filing requirement and permitted measurement policy depend on the jurisdiction and the accounting framework.
What consolidated quarterly results mean
Consolidated results combine the parent and every subsidiary that the parent controls. IFRS 10 defines the objective this way: consolidated financial statements “present the assets, liabilities, equity, income, expenses and cash flows of a parent and its subsidiaries as those of a single economic entity.”
Control is the deciding principle. IFRS 10 requires a parent that controls one or more subsidiaries to present consolidated financial statements. Control is not determined solely by the percentage of shares held; the relevant assessment considers whether the parent has power over the investee, exposure or rights to variable returns, and the ability to use its power to affect those returns.
In consolidation, the group combines like assets, liabilities, equity, income, expenses and cash flows. It then applies the required adjustments, including eliminating transactions and balances between entities inside the group. The result is intended to show dealings with outside parties and the resources and obligations of the group as a whole.

Subsidiaries, associates and joint ventures are not interchangeable
A controlled subsidiary is included in consolidation. An associate or joint venture is not automatically consolidated merely because the parent has an investment or significant influence; the applicable accounting method depends on the governing standards. This distinction matters when reading a company’s list of investments and its explanation of the consolidation perimeter.

How consolidation changes the numbers
Revenue and operating profit
When a subsidiary has substantial sales, its external revenue is added to the group’s consolidated revenue. The subsidiary’s operating costs are added at the same time, so consolidated operating profit reflects both entities rather than simply adding a dividend received by the parent.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This explains why a parent’s standalone revenue can remain flat while consolidated revenue rises. The reverse can also occur: a profitable parent may report weaker consolidated profit if a controlled subsidiary incurs losses, higher costs or impairment charges.
Debt, cash and liquidity
Consolidated liabilities include the borrowings and other obligations of controlled subsidiaries. Group debt can therefore increase even when the parent has not borrowed additional money itself. Consolidated cash includes cash held by subsidiaries, but that cash may not be freely available to the parent because of local regulations, lender covenants, minority ownership, trapped cash or the subsidiary’s own operating needs.
Standalone statements show the parent’s direct loans, interest costs, cash balances and obligations. They are particularly important when creditors lend to the parent entity or when investors are assessing whether the parent can meet upcoming payments without relying on transfers from subsidiaries.

Margins and segment mix
Adding subsidiaries can change gross, operating and net margins because the group may have a different product mix, geography or cost structure from the parent. A parent focused on administration or investment management may have thin standalone revenue and unusual margins, while the consolidated group reflects the operating businesses that generate most external sales.

Cash flow
Consolidated operating cash flow combines cash generated by the parent and controlled subsidiaries after the required consolidation adjustments. Standalone operating cash flow excludes the subsidiaries’ operating cash and may instead show dividends, interest or other transfers received by the parent.
Neither view alone proves that cash can be moved wherever management wants. The legal entity that holds cash, the entity that owes debt and restrictions on upstreaming funds all affect practical liquidity.
Profit attributable to non-controlling interests
A parent can control a subsidiary without owning every share. Consolidated profit then includes the subsidiary’s full results, followed by an allocation between owners of the parent and non-controlling interests. This allocation can make consolidated net profit different from the amount that belongs to the parent company’s shareholders.

Earnings per share
IAS 33 bases consolidated EPS on consolidated profit or loss attributable to ordinary equity holders of the parent. Standalone EPS can differ when subsidiaries contribute earnings or losses, when non-controlling interests change the amount attributable to parent shareholders, or when the relevant share counts and adjustments differ between the two presentations.
Why consolidated profit can differ from standalone profit
The difference is not necessarily an error or a contradiction. Common causes include:
- A subsidiary’s external sales and costs are included in the consolidated income statement but not in the parent’s standalone statement.
- Losses, impairments or restructuring costs at a controlled subsidiary reduce consolidated profit.
- Dividends received from a subsidiary may increase standalone income, while the subsidiary’s underlying profit is already included in consolidated results; the intragroup dividend is eliminated on consolidation.
- Interest on loans between group entities can appear in standalone accounts but is removed from consolidated results because the group cannot earn interest from itself.
- Non-controlling interests reduce the portion of consolidated profit attributable to the parent’s ordinary shareholders.
- Acquisitions, disposals, a loss of control or a restructuring can change which entities are inside the consolidation perimeter.
When comparing the two columns, identify whether the parent is receiving a dividend, recording an investment remeasurement, or reporting direct operating income. Those items are not interchangeable with the subsidiary’s external revenue and operating performance.

Use consolidated results for group performance
Choose the consolidated statement when your question concerns the controlled group’s total sales, operating earnings, leverage, cash generation or business mix. This is usually the appropriate starting point when subsidiaries are material to the company’s strategy or financial risk.

Use standalone results for the parent entity
Standalone information is the better lens for the parent’s direct operations, legal-entity liquidity and financing obligations. It can help explain whether debt sits at the parent or at an operating subsidiary and whether the parent has income such as dividends or interest from investments.
Standalone figures can also matter when considering potential dividends from the parent. The amount that can legally be distributed depends on local company law, distributable reserves, solvency rules, lender restrictions and the entity’s own cash position; consolidated profit by itself does not establish dividend capacity.
Read both when ownership and financing are complex
Read both sets when the parent is a holding company, subsidiaries generate most revenue, minority shareholders are present, or debt and cash are held in different legal entities. The consolidated statement shows the economic group; the standalone statement shows where rights and obligations legally reside.

How to read a quarterly release step by step
- Confirm the label and framework. Check whether the document is marked standalone, separate, consolidated or group results, and note whether it follows IFRS, Ind AS or another local framework.
- Identify the reporting perimeter. Read the list of subsidiaries and the explanation of control. Look for acquisitions, disposals, loss of control, mergers or restructurings during the period.
- Check the reporting dates. Make sure the parent and subsidiaries use the same quarter or understand any permitted difference in reporting dates.
- Compare revenue and expenses. Determine which growth comes from existing operations and which comes from newly consolidated entities. Review exceptional or one-off items separately from recurring performance.
- Trace debt and cash by entity. Use the debt, cash-flow and notes sections to see which legal entity borrowed money and where cash is held.
- Review profit attribution and EPS. Check non-controlling interests and the profit attributable to ordinary equity holders of the parent before comparing EPS.
- Read the notes on intragroup items. Confirm that intercompany sales, loans, receivables, payables, dividends and unrealised gains have been treated under the applicable consolidation rules.
- Check comparability. Account for accounting-policy changes, exceptional items, currency effects and changes in the group perimeter before drawing a quarter-on-quarter conclusion.
Indian reporting: Ind AS 110
For companies reporting under Indian Accounting Standards, Ind AS 110 establishes the same control-based objective: a parent with subsidiaries presents the parent and controlled entities as one economic group. The practical analysis remains the same—identify control, determine the entities included, combine the relevant line items and remove intragroup effects—while the company’s filing format and local legal requirements govern the detailed presentation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating consolidated revenue as the parent’s revenue. Consolidated revenue belongs to the group presentation and may come largely from subsidiaries.
- Assuming consolidated cash is immediately available to the parent. Cash can be held in a subsidiary with restrictions or competing obligations.
- Comparing EPS without checking attribution. Consolidated EPS uses profit attributable to the parent’s ordinary shareholders, not simply total group profit.
- Ignoring non-controlling interests. A subsidiary can be fully consolidated while part of its profit belongs to outside shareholders.
- Overlooking perimeter changes. An acquisition, disposal or loss of control can alter reported growth independently of underlying performance.
- Counting intragroup income as external growth. Transactions inside the group are eliminated in consolidation and do not represent sales to customers outside the group.
- Using one view for every decision. Group profitability, parent liquidity, creditor protection and dividend capacity can require different statements.
Bottom line
Standalone quarterly results describe one legal entity, usually the parent. Consolidated quarterly results combine that parent with the subsidiaries it controls, eliminate intragroup effects and show the group as one economic entity. Use consolidated results to judge overall group performance, and use standalone results to understand the parent’s own operations, obligations and capacity to receive or distribute funds. When subsidiaries or financing arrangements are significant, comparing both views is essential.
