Cosmetic, dermatological and Ayurvedic are not three universal quality grades. They describe different combinations of purpose, formulation tradition, marketing claims and regulatory oversight. Cosmetic products generally maintain or improve appearance; dermatological skincare is a dermatologist-oriented marketing description whose legal status depends on its claims; Ayurvedic products draw on an Indian traditional medical system and may fall under India’s Saundarya Prasadak category when their formulations and intended use meet the applicable rules.
The useful way to compare brands is to look past the front label. Check what the product claims to do, which ingredients it contains, what evidence and safety information the manufacturer provides, how it is made, and which country’s rules apply. “Dermatological” does not automatically mean clinically proven, “natural” does not mean risk-free, and “cosmetic” does not mean ineffective.

What the three labels actually describe
The categories overlap because a single product can have more than one function. A cleanser may remove oil and makeup, which is a cosmetic purpose, while also claiming to treat acne, which can make it a drug in some jurisdictions. A botanical cream may be sold as Ayurvedic while making claims that trigger a different regulatory category. The product’s intended use, wording, ingredients and market determine how it is regulated.
| Label | Primary positioning | What usually determines its legal category | What the label does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmetic | Cleansing, moisturising, beautifying or changing appearance | Intended use and claims; country-specific cosmetics law | That the product is weak, unsafe or untested |
| Dermatological | Dermatologist-oriented, clinical or skin-health presentation | Specific claims and ingredients, not the word “dermatological” alone | Universal clinical efficacy, prescription status or superiority |
| Ayurvedic | Traditional Ayurvedic principles, texts and ingredients | Traditional formulation, ingredients, claims and national AYUSH or drug rules | Automatic safety, modern clinical proof or suitability for every skin type |
There is no published head-to-head statistic establishing that one of these brand categories is safer or more effective overall. A well-made product in any category can be appropriate, while a poorly labelled or irritating product can fail regardless of its branding.

Cosmetic skincare: appearance and maintenance
What counts as a cosmetic
In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration defines cosmetics by intended use as articles applied to the body “for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance.” Examples include moisturisers, makeup and cleansing shampoos. A basic cleanser removes dirt and sebum; a moisturiser reduces dryness and can make fine lines look less noticeable by increasing hydration. Those are appearance and maintenance claims.
How cosmetic claims can change the category
Cosmetics generally do not need FDA premarket approval, apart from color additives, but companies remain responsible for product safety and truthful labelling. The claim on the package matters. “Helps skin feel soft” is a cosmetic-style claim. “Treats acne,” “heals eczema,” “kills fungus” or “repairs the skin’s structure” can make a product a drug or a combination cosmetic-drug product under U.S. rules.
That distinction does not mean cosmetic products are unregulated. The Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022 expanded FDA oversight through measures that include adverse-event reporting, facility registration, product listing and safety-substantiation requirements. The practical question is whether the manufacturer can support its safety and claims, not whether the package uses a clinical-sounding phrase.

When cosmetic skincare is a sensible choice
- Daily cleansing, moisturising, sun protection and makeup removal.
- Improving the look or feel of dryness, dullness or uneven texture without claiming to treat a disease.
- Building a simple routine when you do not have a diagnosed skin condition.
Cosmetic products can still cause irritation, allergy or breakouts. Fragrance, essential oils, preservatives, exfoliating acids and other active ingredients may be unsuitable for a particular person even when the product is legally a cosmetic.
Dermatological skincare: a clinical signal, not a universal legal class
What “dermatological” usually means
“Dermatological skincare” is primarily a consumer and marketing description. It may indicate dermatologist involvement, a focus on skin conditions, testing on volunteers, ingredient transparency or a pharmacy-style presentation. None of those possibilities is guaranteed by the word itself, and there is no single worldwide definition that makes every dermatological brand a drug or a medically proven treatment.

Read the intended use and claim
U.S. FDA guidance illustrates why the wording matters: acne treatments, dandruff treatments and skin protectants are drugs. A cleanser that also claims to treat acne can therefore be both a cosmetic and a drug. Claims about treating a disease, changing the structure or function of skin, or preventing a medical condition usually bring drug requirements into play.
Look for the exact active ingredient, concentration where disclosed, directions, warnings, contraindications and the evidence described by the manufacturer. “Dermatologist tested” may mean that a dermatologist supervised or reviewed a test; it does not, by itself, tell you the test design, sample size or clinical importance. “Clinically inspired” and “medical-grade” are similarly incomplete unless the company explains what they mean.

Not automatically. A dermatological label can be useful when it comes with clear claims, appropriate testing and good manufacturing information, but it is not a substitute for evaluating the formulation. A plain cosmetic moisturiser may be ideal for dry skin, while a treatment claim for persistent acne or eczema may require a regulated medicine and professional advice. Compare products by the problem you are trying to solve and the evidence for the specific formula, not by the prestige of the category.
Ayurvedic skincare: traditional formulations and Indian rules
What makes a product Ayurvedic
Ayurveda is a traditional Indian medical system. Ayurvedic skincare may use ingredients and preparation methods drawn from authoritative Ayurvedic texts and may frame beauty care around traditional concepts rather than modern cosmetic terminology. The presence of a plant, oil or mineral ingredient alone does not establish that a product follows an Ayurvedic formulation.
The Saundarya Prasadak category in India
The Ministry of AYUSH states that formulations with ingredients mentioned in books in the First Schedule of India’s Drugs and Cosmetics Act, and recommended for oral, skin, hair or body care, are considered Saundarya Prasadak under Rule 158B of the Drugs Rules, 1945. This is an Indian regulatory context; it should not be assumed to apply in the United States, Europe or another country.

AYUSH states that safety and effectiveness studies are not required for Saundarya Prasadak products based solely on textual indications. Products containing ingredients listed in Schedule E(1) require safety studies for licensing. The requirement therefore depends on the formulation and regulatory route, not simply on the word “Ayurvedic” printed on a jar.
Is Ayurvedic skincare safe?
It can be, but “natural” is not a safety guarantee. AYUSH pharmacovigilance guidance specifically challenges the belief that natural products are always safe and provides a system for reporting adverse effects and misleading claims. Botanical extracts can cause contact dermatitis, interact with other products or vary in strength. Mineral or other traditional ingredients may also require particular controls.
Choose products with a complete ingredient list, manufacturer and batch details, directions, warnings and evidence of the applicable licence or quality system. Patch-test a new leave-on product, introduce one change at a time and stop if you develop burning, swelling, blistering or a spreading rash. Seek medical care for a severe reaction rather than trying another brand in the same category.
How claims, evidence and quality controls differ
1. Start with the promised benefit
Write down the outcome you need: comfort for dry skin, an appearance change, prevention of sun damage, or help with a diagnosed condition. “Brightening,” “soothing” and “supports the skin barrier” are broad cosmetic-style descriptions. “Treats acne,” “cures eczema” or “removes a lesion” are medical claims that deserve a regulated treatment and, where appropriate, clinician guidance.
2. Check ingredient-level evidence
Evidence should be tied to the actual ingredient, concentration, delivery system and product—not merely to a traditional reputation or a laboratory result for a different formula. Ask whether the company explains how testing was performed, what outcome was measured and what limits apply. A small in-house perception survey cannot be treated as proof that a product treats a disease.

3. Inspect manufacturing information
Useful quality signals include a responsible manufacturer, complete batch or lot information, expiry or period-after-opening guidance, storage instructions and a way to report adverse events. For Ayurvedic products in India, check the applicable licensing details. For products sold as drugs or combination products, read the drug facts or equivalent treatment label. Missing information is a reason to be cautious, regardless of category.
4. Match the formulation to your skin
- Sensitive or eczema-prone skin: prefer short ingredient lists and avoid known personal triggers; introduce products slowly.
- Acne-prone skin: distinguish a cosmetic that reduces oil or shine from a product legally claiming to treat acne.
- Allergies: check fragrance, essential oils, preservatives, botanicals and cross-contact warnings where provided.
- Pregnancy, medication or a diagnosed condition: ask a qualified clinician or pharmacist about active ingredients and interactions.
Why geography changes the answer
A product’s category can change when it crosses a border. FDA notes that a product regulated as a cosmetic in Europe may be regulated as a drug in the United States because the claims or intended use are treated differently. India’s AYUSH and Drugs Rules create their own routes for qualifying Ayurvedic formulations. The same name, packaging and ingredient list therefore do not guarantee identical legal status, permitted claims or oversight in every market.
Check the label and regulator for the country where you are buying and using the product. Online listings can combine descriptions from several markets, so the local package, importer information and directions are more reliable than a seller’s headline claim.
A practical selection process
- Define the goal. Decide whether you need appearance and maintenance or help with a persistent symptom or diagnosed condition.
- Classify the claim. Separate cosmetic wording from treatment, prevention or structure/function claims.
- Read the full label. Record ingredients, concentrations when listed, warnings, directions, batch information and the responsible company.
- Check the evidence. Look for product-specific safety testing and clearly described ingredient evidence; do not treat “dermatological” or “Ayurvedic” as proof on its own.
- Patch-test and phase in. Apply a small amount as directed, add only one new product at a time and allow enough time to identify irritation.
- Escalate medical problems. Persistent acne, eczema, suspicious lesions, infection-like symptoms or a significant reaction warrant assessment by a qualified clinician.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Equating “dermatological” with prescription strength: verify the active ingredient, claim and evidence.
- Assuming Ayurvedic means harmless: natural substances can irritate or cause allergy, and some ingredients have additional safety requirements.
- Judging a cosmetic as ineffective because it is not a drug: moisturising, cleansing and appearance benefits are legitimate cosmetic purposes.
- Using a brand label as a diagnosis: a skincare category cannot identify the cause of a rash, lesion or persistent inflammation.
- Ignoring the market: verify the rules and label for the country where the product is sold.
When to involve a clinician
See a qualified dermatologist or other appropriate clinician for acne that persists despite basic care, worsening eczema, painful or infected-looking areas, a changing or bleeding lesion, widespread swelling, breathing difficulty, or any reaction that does not settle after stopping a product. Professional advice is also appropriate when you are pregnant, taking medicines, treating a chronic condition or considering products with strong treatment claims.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does “dermatologist tested” prove that a skincare product works?
No. The phrase does not specify the study design, number of participants, comparison product or clinical importance. Ask for product-specific testing details and read the actual claim.
Can one product be both cosmetic and a drug?
Yes. In the United States, a cleanser marketed for cleansing can also be regulated as a drug if it claims to treat acne or another condition.
Are all Ayurvedic skincare products regulated the same way?
No. In India, the route depends on the formulation, ingredients and claims. Qualifying products may be treated as Saundarya Prasadak under Rule 158B, while products containing Schedule E(1) ingredients have additional safety-study requirements for licensing.

What should I do if a new product causes a rash?
Stop using it, keep the package and ingredient list, and seek medical advice if the reaction is severe, spreading, blistering, associated with swelling or breathing trouble, or does not improve.
Which category is best for sensitive skin?
No category guarantees suitability. Compare the complete ingredient list, avoid known triggers, patch-test cautiously and obtain clinical advice for recurring or diagnosed skin problems.
