There are two separate Modern Warfare story continuities, so do not combine them into one six-game sequence. Play the original trilogy as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) → Modern Warfare 2 (2009) → Modern Warfare 3 (2011). Play the reboot trilogy as Modern Warfare (2019) → Modern Warfare II (2022) → Modern Warfare III (2023).
Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is the 2009 campaign with upgraded presentation, not a different sequel and not the 2022 Modern Warfare II. As of October 19, 2026, Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for October 23, 2026; when it is released, it is intended to follow Modern Warfare III in the reboot continuity.

The two continuities at a glance
The title punctuation is the quickest way to avoid the most common mistake. The original games use the numeral “2” and “3”; the rebooted games use Roman numerals “II” and “III.” They are not alternate editions of the same timeline. The 2019 game starts a reimagined universe rather than continuing the 2007 story.

Choose one row if you want a self-contained story. You can play both rows, but finish one continuity before starting the other if you want character and plot developments to remain clear.

- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007)
This is the entry point for the original universe. Its campaign establishes the characters, geopolitical conflict and relationships that the next two games assume you already understand. If you are starting the original storyline, begin here rather than with a game whose title contains “Modern Warfare 2.”
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)
The 2009 sequel follows the original campaign’s story framework. It is the game commonly abbreviated as “MW2,” but that abbreviation can be misleading once the 2022 reboot exists. Confirm the release year or the plain numeral “2” before buying or launching it.
3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011)
Play this after the 2009 game to complete the original trilogy’s arc. Do not substitute the 2023 title here: Modern Warfare 3 (2011) and Modern Warfare III (2023) belong to different universes.

Modern Warfare Remastered
Modern Warfare Remastered is a presentation-upgraded way to play the first original campaign. It occupies the same story position as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007); it does not create a third continuity or add a new chapter. If your priority is the original story with newer visual presentation, use the remastered edition as your first entry.
Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered (2020)
Activision describes this release as the “single-player Campaign from the 2009 blockbuster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, remastered in true high-definition.” That wording matters: it reproduces the 2009 campaign. It belongs between the first original campaign and Modern Warfare 3 (2011), and it is not the 2022 game titled Modern Warfare II.

1. Modern Warfare (2019)
The reboot begins with Modern Warfare, released on October 25, 2019. It reworks the setting and character framework rather than continuing the 2007–2011 plot. Treat it as the required starting point for the reboot campaign story.
2. Modern Warfare II (2022)
The Roman numeral “II” identifies the reboot sequel. Play its campaign after the 2019 game. It is not interchangeable with Modern Warfare 2 (2009), even though both titles are often shortened to “MW2” in conversation.

3. Modern Warfare III (2023)
The reboot’s third campaign follows Modern Warfare II. Activision’s recap records its launch as November 10, 2023. If you are asking “Do I play Modern Warfare III after MW2?”, the answer is yes only when “MW2” means the 2022 Modern Warfare II; the 2011 Modern Warfare 3 is the next game only after the 2009 original sequel.
Are Special Ops, RAID Episodes and DMZ required?
For a campaign-only playthrough, no. Activision’s official recap presents a broader reboot-story path in this order:
- Campaign — Modern Warfare (2019)
- Special Ops — Modern Warfare
- Campaign — Modern Warfare II (2022)
- RAID Episodes — Modern Warfare II
- DMZ — Modern Warfare II
That list includes supplemental modes, not additional numbered campaign releases. The essential campaign order remains the three reboot campaigns. Add Special Ops, RAID Episodes or DMZ only if you want extra setting and character context and are comfortable treating those modes as optional. The official guidance does not establish a complete chronological mission order for every mode, so “campaign order” is the more precise description.
How to choose which trilogy to play first
Start with the original trilogy if you want the 2007–2011 arc
- Choose Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) or its remastered presentation as your entry point.
- Continue with the 2009 campaign, using Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered if preferred.
- Finish with Modern Warfare 3 (2011).
This route preserves the original character and story framework in release order. The remasters change presentation, not the position of those campaigns in the narrative.
Start with the reboot if you want the current reimagined universe
- Begin with Modern Warfare (2019).
- Continue to Modern Warfare II (2022).
- Finish the currently released trilogy with Modern Warfare III (2023).
This route follows Activision’s stated order and avoids importing assumptions from the original universe into the reboot’s reworked storyline.
Play both without mixing them
A clean double-series plan is to complete all three original campaigns first, take a break, then begin the reboot with the 2019 game. Alternatively, complete the reboot trilogy first and then return to the original games as a separate historical arc. In either plan, keep a simple year-and-title note nearby: “2009, numeral 2” is original; “2022, Roman II” is reboot.

As of October 19, 2026, Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026. Xbox Wire described it on May 28, 2026 as the follow-up to Modern Warfare III, with its story picking up shortly after that game. The current released reboot order therefore remains 2019 → 2022 → 2023 on the date of this guide.

After release, place Modern Warfare 4 after Modern Warfare III in a reboot-campaign playthrough, while checking the final in-game story details if the launch version changes the announced continuity. Its official campaign page identifies missions in Korea, New York, Paris and Mumbai and names Captain Price as a central character. Those details support its position as a continuation, not as a prequel to the 2019 game.

Common title and order mistakes
Confusing “2” with “II”
Modern Warfare 2 (2009) is the original trilogy’s second campaign. Modern Warfare II (2022) is the reboot trilogy’s second campaign. They are separate stories despite nearly identical spoken names.
Treating a remaster as a sequel
Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is a refreshed version of the 2009 single-player campaign. It does not sit between the 2009 and 2022 games, and it does not add a new story chapter.
Putting the 2019 game after the 2011 game
The 2019 release is a reboot entry point, not the fourth installment of the original continuity. Starting with it after Modern Warfare 3 will switch universes rather than continue the same plot.
Calling optional modes “campaign chapters”
Special Ops, RAID Episodes and DMZ can provide supplemental context in the reboot ecosystem, but they are not required entries in the numbered campaign sequence. Label them as optional when planning a playthrough.

- Decide whether you want the original or reboot continuity.
- Check the year and numeral in the title before launching: 2009 “2” and 2022 “II” are different games.
- If selecting a remaster, verify which original campaign it reproduces.
- Play each continuity in release/story sequence rather than attempting to merge both trilogies.
- For a campaign-only run, skip supplemental modes; add them later if you want optional context.
- Recheck the status of Modern Warfare 4 because its October 23, 2026 launch date is future-dated relative to the October 19, 2026 information above.
