What Is the Best Bevel Angle for a Shovel?

About 45° is a practical starting point for a general-purpose shovel when its original bevel is gone; preserve a sound existing bevel and sharpen only the top face.

For a general-purpose shovel with no clear factory bevel, about 45° is a conservative starting point. If the existing bevel is sound, match it instead of grinding in a new angle. A shallower edge can cut more easily but is less suited to heavy use; a thicker, steeper edge favors durability.

Choose an angle for the shovel’s work

There is no single factory angle established for every shovel. Blade construction and intended use matter, so treat published angles as practical guidance rather than a universal specification.

Situation Practical approach Trade-off
Sound existing bevel Preserve and follow the bevel. Avoids removing metal to impose an unnecessary new angle.
General-purpose shovel with no remaining bevel Start at about 45° relative to the flat blade face, following K-State’s guidance for filing a new edge. A conservative balance for a general digging tool.
Light-duty work K-State recommends about 20° for light-duty tools. A shallower edge can improve cutting, but a thin edge can wear or bend more readily.
Heavy-duty work Use a larger angle than the light-duty recommendation, favoring a stronger edge. More durability, though the edge may not cut as readily as a thin bevel.

The recommendations differ because they address different needs. The University of Florida IFAS says most shovels require about 45° and warns that a sharper edge may dull too quickly. K-State Research and Extension says a shallow angle improves the cut, but an edge that is too thin can bend; it advises increasing the angle for heavy-duty tools. These are extension recommendations, not results from a controlled comparison of shovel angles. [UF/IFAS; K-State Research and Extension]

Sharpen the shovel without changing its profile unnecessarily

  1. Clean and secure the blade. Remove dirt, debris, and rust that obscure the edge. Clamp the shovel or secure it in a vise so it cannot shift while you work.
  2. Inspect the bevel. If a clear bevel remains and is in sound condition, use it as your guide. If you are rebuilding the edge, K-State’s guidance is to hold the file at 45° to the flat surface of the tool head.
  3. File the top face. Use a flat mill file in smooth forward strokes, working evenly along the edge and maintaining the chosen angle. A hand file is the straightforward option for routine sharpening.
  4. Remove the burr from the back. Once filing raises a burr, hold the file flush against the back of the blade and remove the burr gently. Do not form a second bevel or round over the cutting edge.
  5. Protect the metal. Clean away filings and apply a light coating of oil to help slow rusting.

A shovel or spade is beveled on the top—the soil-carrying face—only. Filing the back at an angle creates a second bevel and changes the edge profile. K-State’s garden-tool guide specifies this one-sided bevel. [K-State Research and Extension]

When to use a grinder

A powered grinder can help with a badly dull or damaged edge, but it is less forgiving than a file. Wear hearing and eye protection, avoid removing more metal than needed, and finish any roughness with a mill file. For routine touch-ups, a file gives you more direct control over the existing bevel. K-State includes these precautions for grinder use. [K-State Research and Extension]
