Keep rebuildable sets grouped together; sort a shared parts collection into broad, easy-to-maintain categories. Match containers to those categories, label them clearly, and store the bricks somewhere dry and away from heat and direct sunlight.
Choose what you want your system to do
There is no single correct way to organize LEGO bricks. The LEGO Group identifies sorting by color, set, size, and type as common approaches. Pick the one that makes the pieces you need easiest to retrieve.

Keep sets together if you may rebuild them
Put the pieces for each set in its own container or bag, and keep the instructions with them. This takes more containers than combining everything, but it makes it easier to rebuild a set without searching through a mixed collection. If a set is only partly disassembled, keep its loose pieces together rather than sorting them into your general bins.

Sort shared pieces for flexible building
If you regularly use parts from many sets, group loose pieces into categories. Type or size is a practical starting point: it helps separate unlike elements even when their colors match. Sorting by color can work when color is the first thing you look for. You can also combine approaches—for example, broad type groups with color subdivisions for the categories you use often.

Start with a few broad groups. Add finer divisions only when a category becomes difficult to search. A detailed system can save time when retrieving pieces, but only if you are willing to keep sorting new bricks into it.
Match the containers to your collection and categories
The best format depends on how much you own, how much space you have, and whether you need to reach categories separately. The LEGO Group lists clear storage bins, tool or craft boxes, sandwich bags, plastic drawer systems, food storage containers, LEGO Storage bricks, and minifigure display cases as options. These are formats to consider, not a tested ranking.

Make categories easy to recognize and maintain
Use labels that match the way you actually sort: set name or number for grouped sets, or a short type, size, or color description for loose parts. Put the same wording on the container and any smaller bags inside it. This is a practical way to make a system easier to use; no particular label format is required.

- Keep complete sets separate from shared loose parts.
- Leave room in frequently used containers so new pieces can be added without forcing a category to overflow.
- When a category becomes frustrating to search, split it; when several categories are rarely used and easy to distinguish, consider combining them.
Store bricks away from moisture, heat, and direct sun
The LEGO Group advises keeping bricks dry and away from heat and direct sunlight. It cautions that temperatures above 104°F (40°C) may make bricks brittle or discolored over time. Avoid storage locations that regularly get hotter than that, such as a spot beside a heat source or in strong sun.

LEGO Education’s Small Sorting Top Trays, model 45495, are an example of a purpose-built parts organizer. The product page lists boxes 45497, 45496, and 9840 as compatible, but marks the tray retired. That makes it a reference for the format, not a promise that it is currently available; check current listings before looking for one.

A simple way to set up your system
- Separate rebuildable sets. Put each set’s pieces together and keep its instructions with them.
- Choose a sorting basis for the remaining pieces. Start with broad type or size categories, or choose color if that better matches how you search.
- Select containers that fit the categories. Use bags or boxes for broad or temporary groups; use compartments, drawers, or open-front bins when independent access matters.
- Label the categories. Keep the labels simple enough that you can sort new pieces consistently.
- Review the system as it fills. Split categories that are difficult to search, and avoid maintaining finer divisions than you find useful.
- Choose a suitable storage location. Keep the containers dry, out of direct sunlight, and away from temperatures above 104°F (40°C).
