What Is the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship Format, and How Do Its Courses Work?

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship has individual and team competitions, a three-course opening rotation and an Old Course final round.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship runs two competitions at once: an individual stroke-play tournament for professionals and a team pro-am. In the first three rounds, each pair plays the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie Championship Course and Kingsbarns Golf Links once; the final round is at the Old Course. The professional and team leaderboards use different scoring rules.

How the two competitions work

The current championship format pairs 168 professionals with 168 amateurs. Each professional competes in the individual tournament and also forms a team with one amateur. The amateur’s score affects the team contest, not the professional’s individual score. The official format is described on the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship website.

Individual professional competition

Professionals play their own stroke-play event. After three rounds, the leading 60 professionals and ties advance to the final round.

Team pro-am competition

On each hole, the team counts whichever is lower: the professional’s score or the amateur’s net score. The amateur receives an allowance of two-thirds of their official handicap, capped at 18 for men and 24 for women. The team leaderboard is therefore separate from the individual professional leaderboard.

How the three-course rotation works

Every pair plays one round at each of the three venues during the opening three rounds. The draw sets the order, so pairs do not necessarily visit the courses in the same sequence. After those rounds, the leading 20 teams continue, alongside the professionals who make the individual cut. The final round is played at St Andrews’ Old Course.

Course Role in the championship What the organizer highlights
Old Course, St Andrews One of the three opening-round venues and the sole final-round venue The tournament describes it as the “Home of Golf,” with a history of play stretching back hundreds of years.
Carnoustie Championship Course One of the three opening-round venues The organizer calls it one of the most challenging links courses and notes that the Barry Burn winds around the closing two holes.
Kingsbarns Golf Links One of the three opening-round venues The coastal layout south of St Andrews is described by the organizer as a risk-and-reward links course, designed by Kyle Phillips and Mark Parsinen.

These characterizations are the tournament’s descriptions, not measured comparisons of course difficulty. The format’s defining contrast is that St Andrews hosts the finale, Carnoustie is presented as especially testing, and Kingsbarns as a newer coastal risk-and-reward venue. Course details are on the organizer’s course guide.

Herrydale Golf Yardage Book 4-Pack – Waterproof Stone Paper Notebook, 4x6.5“
  • ✅ BLANK GRID YARDAGE BOOK – This is a 4-pack of blank golf yardage books designed for drawing green contours, mapping approach shots, and tracking club distances your way. Unlike pre-printed yardage books that lock you into one course layout, the blank grid lets you sketch personalized course maps, green undulations, and pin positions — just like the yardage books touring pros carry.
  • ✅ 100% WATERPROOF STONE PAPER – BUILT FOR REAL GOLF. Rain, sweat, mud, or spilled drinks won't ruin your notes. Unlike conventional paper yardage books that become unusable the moment they get wet, our stone paper is completely waterproof, grease-proof, and mud-proof. Each 44-page book is just 0.4 inches thick and weighs only 2.2 oz — substantial enough to feel premium, light enough to forget it's in your pocket.
  • ✅ NO BLEED-THROUGH, NO GHOSTING, NO FALLING APART. Stone paper naturally resists ink bleed-through — use both sides of every page without the ghosting that plagues thin conventional paper. Pencil and ballpoint glide smoothly without skipping. The reinforced spiral binding and tear-resistant pages hold up round after round, season after season. No curled covers, no loose pages, no frustration.
  • ✅ STANDARD 4"x6.5" TOURNAMENT SIZE – FITS ALL MAJOR HOLDERS. Slips easily into your back pocket, golf bag front pouch, and most standard yardage book covers and scorecard holders — including CADDENT, BACK POCKET GOLF, and similar brand covers. Use as a standalone yardage book or as refills for your existing leather cover. Safe size for amateur and professional tournament play.
  • ✅ECO-FRIENDLY 4-PACK VALUE SET Made without trees or water bleach. This 4-pack ensures you have enough for practice rounds, tournaments, and league play. An ideal gift for golfers who take their game seriously.
