To set up the 2nd-generation Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max, connect it to your TV’s HDMI port, power it from the included wall adapter, then follow the on-screen steps to join Wi-Fi and sign in to your Amazon account. You’ll need a TV remote to select the right HDMI input. The steps below follow Amazon’s 2nd-generation setup guide; Amazon also provides separate quick-start guides for the 1st generation.
What you need before setup
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max and the included Alexa Voice Remote Enhanced, USB power cable, power adapter and AAA batteries. The box may also include an optional HDMI extender.
- A television with an available HDMI port.
- Wi-Fi access, plus your network name and password.
- An Amazon account and its sign-in details. If your account does not have a password, Amazon’s setup instructions say to press Back when prompted, then use the on-screen amazon.com/code flow and enter the verification code.
Connect the Fire TV Stick and open its setup screen
- Insert the AAA batteries into the remote.
- Connect the USB power cable to the Fire TV Stick and the included power adapter.
- Plug the stick into an available HDMI port on the TV. Use the included HDMI extender if the port is awkward to reach or crowded.
- Plug the power adapter into a wall outlet. Amazon advises against powering the stick by plugging its USB cable directly into the TV.
- Turn on the TV. With the TV remote, select the HDMI input that the Fire TV Stick is connected to. The Fire TV setup screen should appear.
Connect to Wi-Fi
Follow the on-screen network setup. You can scan the displayed QR code with a phone or select the manual Wi-Fi option and use the Fire TV remote. If you choose manual setup, select your network and enter its password.

Register your Amazon account
Use the on-screen QR-code option, or enter the displayed activation code at the on-screen amazon.com/code address. Sign in to your Amazon account or complete registration as prompted. If you cannot sign in because you have forgotten the password, reset your Amazon account password and try again.

Continue through the on-screen instructions. Fire TV may offer to configure equipment control for connected devices such as a soundbar. You can also set up the Alexa Voice Remote to control your TV’s power and volume; these controls are separate from connecting the stick and joining Wi-Fi.

If setup gets stuck
The remote does not pair
If the remote does not pair automatically, press and hold Home until the screen prompts you to press Play/Pause to start. Amazon says holding Home takes about 10 seconds; follow the pairing prompt that appears.
Your Wi-Fi network is missing or will not connect
Check that you selected the correct network and entered its password accurately. For further steps, use Amazon’s Fire TV Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide. If the password itself is the problem, contact your internet provider.

Apps or games will not download
Amazon says you may need to add a default payment method to your account to download apps or games.
Optional: use Alexa Home Theater over HDMI ARC
Alexa Home Theater is an optional Echo-speaker feature, not a requirement for normal Fire TV setup. Amazon lists both generations of the Fire TV Stick 4K Max as compatible with this feature over HDMI ARC. You need an ARC-capable TV and a compatible Echo configuration.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
- Connect the Fire TV Stick to the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC.
- Enable ARC on the TV, and enable CEC if the TV requires it.
- Complete the Alexa Home Theater setup and adjust the TV’s audio setting if needed. Menu names and audio options vary by TV.
