AI chatbots answer questions about current events either from information learned during training or by using a live search or grounding tool to retrieve newer material. When search is active, a typical process is to interpret the question, find relevant pages, synthesize a response and attach source links. The exact process varies by product, and a citation is a lead to check—not proof that the answer is correct.
How do AI chatbots know what’s happening right now?
A chatbot without live tools can draw on information encoded during training, but that information does not automatically include events after the model’s training cutoff. Search and grounding features can give some systems access to newer web information. Google describes Search grounding as a way to reach real-time information beyond a model’s cutoff, while OpenAI describes web search as a way to look up current or niche information and provide cited answers. The chatbot interface alone does not tell you whether it searched. Check whether the product’s search feature is available and enabled, and whether the answer shows sources. If the answer supplies no source links, do not assume it verified a breaking-news claim against the web.
What happens when a chatbot searches for news?
Search-enabled chatbots commonly follow a sequence like this, though products differ in how they implement it:

- Assess the question. The system may decide that a changing or recent topic would benefit from fresh information. Google says Gemini can analyze a prompt and generate one or more Search queries when it judges Search could improve the answer; Anthropic says Claude invokes search for topics that benefit from current information. - Retrieve material. Search may surface news reports, official documents and other web pages. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search uses third-party search providers as well as content supplied directly by partners; that is a description of ChatGPT Search, not a universal account of chatbot sourcing. - Synthesize a response. The model processes retrieved material and writes an answer. Google describes Gemini as processing Search results and formulating a response grounded in them. The final text is still generated by a model, so a relevant-looking result does not by itself establish that each claim is supported. (Google grounding documentation)
- Attach citations or links. Depending on the product, sources may appear as inline annotations, links or other citation formats. OpenAI’s API documentation describes URL annotations that identify a source and the range of answer text associated with it; Google documents inline citation annotations, and Anthropic describes direct citations and links. Do chatbots search the internet for current events?
Some can, but whether they do depends on the specific product and its configuration. A search-capable system may choose to look for current information, or a user may need to enable a search feature. A tool can also fail to retrieve useful material: pages may be blocked by paywalls or website settings, connectivity may affect availability, and search results may be incomplete or uneven. OpenAI identifies technical issues, paywalls and robots.txt preferences as possible reasons a model may not access a relevant site; Anthropic also notes that search availability can vary with connectivity. Can I trust the sources an AI chatbot cites?
Citations make it easier to inspect where a claim may have come from; they do not guarantee that the claim is true, that its source is authoritative, or that the chatbot has represented the source accurately. For a consequential claim, check it this way:
- Open the cited link and locate the passage that is meant to support the claim.
- Check the publication date and whether the source covers the relevant place or jurisdiction.
- Compare the chatbot’s wording with the passage, rather than relying on the citation’s presence.
- For important or contested facts, consult independent reporting or an authoritative primary document as well.
These checks help catch stale coverage, a source that discusses a different event or region, and summaries that overstate what the underlying material says.

- No fresh search: without an active tool, an answer may rely on training knowledge that predates the event.
- Retrieval gaps: the search may miss the most relevant report, or a page may be inaccessible.
- Weak or mismatched evidence: a source can be old, geographically irrelevant or insufficient to support the specific claim.
- False premises: a question that assumes something untrue can steer a response toward an incorrect answer unless the system challenges the assumption.
- Language differences: performance may vary across languages.
- Overconfident wording: fluency and certainty are not evidence of reliability.
What a 2026 chatbot news evaluation found
A 2026 preprint, Evaluating Commercial AI Chatbots as News Intermediaries, tested six commercial chatbots for 14 days, from February 9–22. It used 2,100 factual questions derived from same-day BBC News reporting across six regional services. Its findings apply to that set of systems, questions, dates and answer formats—not to every chatbot or future news question. (2026 evaluation preprint)
- The best-performing systems exceeded 90% accuracy on multiple-choice questions about events reported hours earlier. For those systems, free-response accuracy was 11–13 percentage points lower; across the full evaluated group, the reduction was 16–17 points.
- Reported accuracy was 79% for Hindi questions, compared with 89–91% for the other evaluated languages.
- The authors attributed over 70% of errors to retrieval failures.
- On well-formed questions, systems scored 88–96%; on versions with subtly false premises, scores fell to 19–70%.
The contrast between multiple-choice and free-response results matters: recognizing a correct option is not the same task as independently producing an accurate answer. The reported retrieval errors also underline why source quality and coverage matter alongside the model’s ability to write a plausible summary.

How to compare two chatbot answers about the same event
Use the same checks for each answer, rather than judging by which sounds more confident:

- Was live search enabled, and are sources shown?
- Do the sources fit the claim’s topic, date and geography, and are they authoritative for that fact?
- Does the cited passage actually support the statement attached to it?
- Does the answer acknowledge uncertainty or conflicting accounts where relevant?
- Does the question itself contain an assumption that needs checking?
- If language matters, does the answer remain consistent when asked in another language?
