A mainstream flagship is often the better all-round choice when cameras, software support and everyday use matter just as much. There is no established controlled, same-game comparison here that proves one category always performs better.
What matters most when gaming on a phone?
Peak specifications can be misleading. A display’s refresh-rate ceiling does not guarantee a game will run at that rate, and a large battery capacity does not by itself show how long a phone will last in a particular game. For a useful comparison, look at the exact models, games and test conditions—not just the category label.

- Long sessions: Look for sustained-load tests of the specific phone and game, along with information about cooling and comfort.
- Competitive play: Check the game’s frame-rate support and whether built-in triggers or a compatible controller would help.
- Everyday use: Weigh gaming against cameras, software support, ergonomics and the phone’s current price.
How do gaming-phone and flagship displays compare?
ASUS specifies the ROG Phone 9’s 6.78-inch FHD+ (2400 × 1080) AMOLED display as adaptive from 1–120 Hz, with higher modes of up to 165 Hz in system settings and 185 Hz in Game Genie. Those are manufacturer specifications; the rate you actually see depends on the game’s support and the settings in use. See ASUS’s ROG Phone 9 specifications.
Tom’s Guide lists the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra with a 6.9-inch display and a 1–120 Hz refresh rate. The figures do not mean the ROG Phone 9 will deliver a higher frame rate in every game: a game must support the mode, and its performance depends on more than the panel’s maximum refresh rate. Will a flagship phone run demanding games?
Yes. A flagship can be a credible gaming device. Tom’s Guide reports that the Galaxy S26 Ultra showed no throttling or discomfort during its one-hour Genshin Impact test. That is a finding from one reviewer’s test of one model under those conditions, not a guarantee for every game, session or flagship—and it was not a controlled comparison against a gaming phone.
For your own shortlist, prioritize independent tests of the exact models in the games you play. Match session length and settings as closely as possible, and distinguish a sustained-load test from a short performance run.

Do gaming phones stay cooler during long sessions?
Cooling is one of the features gaming phones emphasize, but manufacturer descriptions alone do not prove that a model will stay cooler than a particular flagship in every game. ASUS describes the ROG Phone 9’s thermal design and says pairing it with the optional AeroActive Cooler X Pro delivers up to 29% more effective cooling. That percentage is ASUS’s claim; it should not be treated as a directly comparable result against another manufacturer’s cooling metric. What gaming controls and accessories are available?
Some gaming phones offer controls beyond the touchscreen. ASUS documents AirTrigger controls for the ROG Phone 8 and describes the ROG Tessen as a plug-in controller for that model. Do not assume the Tessen or another accessory works with every ROG phone; check exact model compatibility. ASUS’s details are on its ROG Tessen page.
Built-in triggers or a controller are most relevant if your preferred games benefit from extra inputs. If you play games designed around touch controls, those features may matter less than comfort, sustained performance or battery life.

How should you compare battery life?
ASUS lists the ROG Phone 9 battery at 5800 mAh and claims at least 4.5 hours of heavy gaming. The capacity is a manufacturer specification, and the runtime is a vendor claim—not an independently verified result or a direct comparison with a flagship. Tom’s Guide’s cited Galaxy S26 Ultra coverage does not provide a comparable gaming-runtime figure.
To compare endurance, seek gaming battery tests that use the same game, settings, session length and test method. Battery capacity alone cannot tell you which phone will last longer in your actual use.

Current prices, regional availability and software-support details can also vary, so verify those for the specific models you are considering.
