On Windows, use Task Manager: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, then check Processes for memory use by individual apps or Performance > Memory for the system-wide view. To see what changes during play, note the readings before launching the game and check them again while it is running.
Which Task Manager view should you use?
| View | What it shows | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Processes | Memory use by running apps and processes. | Find the game, browser, launcher, chat app, or background process using memory. |
| Performance > Memory | An overall view of system memory use. | See how much memory the system is using as a whole. |
Microsoft documents Task Manager as a tool for monitoring system resources and recommends using its Processes and Performance views when investigating resource use. Microsoft’s Task Manager guide and Windows performance troubleshooting advice describe these views.

How to check RAM use during a game
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Before starting the game, select Processes and note the memory figures for the larger apps and processes. You can also open Performance > Memory and note the overall reading.
- Launch the game and return to Task Manager while it is running. Compare the game process and other active processes with your earlier notes, then check Performance > Memory for the system-wide picture.
If the game uses exclusive full-screen mode, a second display can make it easier to keep Task Manager visible. Otherwise, return to Task Manager between runs and compare readings. This is a practical way to observe use, not a guaranteed in-game overlay or a controlled benchmark.

How to interpret the readings
A high memory figure by itself does not show that something is wrong or that you need more RAM. Check which processes account for the use, consider the overall memory view, and relate the readings to symptoms you actually experience, such as slowdowns. One peak is only a snapshot; the cited Windows guidance does not establish a gaming-specific threshold or a safe-use percentage.
#1 Best Overall
- Supports Intel Coffee Lake Processors and Intel Extreme Memory Profile (Intel XMP) Standards.
- Aluminum heat sink
- Speeds up to 3200 MT/s / Timing 16-18-18-38 / Voltage 1.35V / Unbuffered / 8GB based
- Backed by a lifetime warranty to promise complete services and technical support.
- Advertised speeds are reached via XMP or the equivalent profile (such as DOCP or A-XMP) in your BIOS profiles. Actual performance varies by system configuration (Motherboard/CPU compatibility). Plug-and-play speeds follow JEDEC standards.
RAM is short-term working memory. Microsoft explains that more memory can help a device handle more simultaneous activity without slowdowns, but that general explanation does not set a universal gaming requirement. Microsoft’s memory explainer offers general guidance, not a gaming threshold.
Task Manager is already included in Windows, so you do not need a separate product to check these readings. Microsoft notes that running an application while gaming has some system-resource impact, but does not quantify Task Manager’s specific overhead; its impact should not be assumed to be zero or corrected by an invented amount. Microsoft’s Game Assist FAQ makes the general resource-impact point.

Does your PC need more RAM?
Microsoft lists 4 GB as the minimum RAM requirement for Windows 11. That is an operating-system minimum, not a recommendation for gaming. The Windows requirements page does not establish a universal amount of RAM for playing games. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.
Whether an upgrade is possible or useful depends on the specific computer and what you run on it. Microsoft notes that some PCs below the 4 GB minimum may have upgrade options and recommends checking with the PC manufacturer or a retailer. That does not mean every PC is upgradeable or that any particular memory kit will fit.
