Microsoft documents wt.exe as the command alias and WindowsTerminal.exe inside the packaged application. A file named only terminal.exe may be harmless software, but its filename alone does not prove that it belongs to Microsoft. Verify its complete path, digital signature, package source and scan results before allowing it to run.
What terminal.exe means on Windows
Windows Terminal is Microsoft’s modern host for Command Prompt, Windows PowerShell and other command-line applications. In normal installations, you launch it from the Start menu or with the wt.exe command. The packaged program contains an executable named WindowsTerminal.exe. Microsoft documentation does not identify a standalone file named exactly terminal.exe as the standard launcher.

That distinction matters because Windows can display a process name without showing the complete location. Two files with similar names can have entirely different origins: one may be part of a legitimate application, while another may be an unrelated program placed in a temporary or user-writable folder. Do not label a file malicious solely because its name is unfamiliar, and do not trust it solely because it contains the word “Terminal.”

The exact package directory includes version information, so the final folder name varies. The important clues are the Microsoft.WindowsTerminal package name and the protected WindowsApps location, not a particular version suffix.

Is terminal.exe safe or a virus?
There is no universal answer from the filename alone. A legitimate program can use terminal.exe, and malware can copy a familiar-looking name. Treat an unexpected copy as unverified until you check its provenance.
Verify the full path
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - On the Processes or Details tab, locate the suspicious process.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location. If that option is unavailable, right-click the process, choose Properties, and inspect the Location field.
- Record the complete path before closing the window. A packaged Terminal component should resolve to a Microsoft.WindowsTerminal package under
C:Program FilesWindowsApps, while its settings belong in one of the documented LocalState paths.
A copy in %TEMP%, a random folder under %APPDATA%, a downloads directory or a folder with a misspelled Microsoft name deserves additional scrutiny. Location is a clue, not proof: some legitimate third-party terminal programs use other directories.
Check the publisher signature
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures. Select the signer and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and that the signer is Microsoft for a file you believe is part of Windows Terminal.
- Use View Certificate if you need to inspect the certificate chain and validity dates.
An absent, invalid or unrelated signature does not automatically prove malware, but it means the file is not verified as the Microsoft component you expected.

Right-click the file and choose the Windows Security scan option available on your edition of Windows. You can also open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, then run a scan that includes the file or its containing folder. Do not upload confidential command scripts or dump files to public scanning services.

Check how it starts
In Task Manager, inspect the Startup apps tab for an entry associated with the file. Also check Settings > Apps > Startup, scheduled tasks and shortcuts in the Startup folders. A Microsoft Windows Terminal install normally starts when you launch a console or a shortcut, not as an unexplained background startup item. Disable an unknown startup entry only after recording its path and publisher; removing a legitimate entry can break another application.
Why Windows Terminal appears unexpectedly
In Windows 11 version 22H2, Microsoft changed the default app that hosts console windows to Windows Terminal. Microsoft Support ties this behavior to the October 2022 update. As a result, Command Prompt, Windows PowerShell and other console applications can open inside a Terminal window even when you did not deliberately start Terminal.
This is usually a console-host selection issue rather than evidence of a rogue executable. An older program may nevertheless have compatibility problems with the new host, especially if it expects the classic console window.

- Open Settings and go to Privacy & security > For developers on current Windows 11 builds, or open Windows Terminal and choose Settings.
- In Terminal settings, open Startup.
- Find the option for the default terminal application and select Windows Console Host instead of Windows Terminal.
- Close and reopen Command Prompt or PowerShell to test the change.
Labels can vary by Windows build. If you cannot find the setting in Windows Settings, open Terminal’s own settings and look under Startup. Changing this option affects where console programs are hosted; it does not uninstall Windows Terminal.

Common terminal.exe and Windows Terminal symptoms

Manual fixes, in the order to try them
1. Confirm whether the problem is wt.exe or a separate terminal.exe
Press Win+R, type wt, and press Enter. If Windows launches Terminal, the registered alias works and the issue may be a shortcut, profile or unrelated file named terminal.exe. If Windows reports that it cannot find wt.exe, continue with package-repair steps below rather than downloading a random executable.
For a process that is already running, use Task Manager’s Open file location command and compare the path with the documented package locations. Do not replace a file in WindowsApps manually; that directory is managed by Windows and the package system.
2. Test without profile customizations
Terminal profiles can change the startup directory and command line. Microsoft notes that a PowerShell profile or a script specified by a profile’s commandline can override the profile’s startingDirectory. This can make Terminal open in an unexpected folder or fail before a prompt appears.

- Open Terminal settings with
Ctrl+,, then choose Open JSON file if the graphical editor is unavailable. - Make a backup copy of
settings.jsonbefore editing. - Inspect the profile that fails. Check
startingDirectory,commandline, and any command that invokes a PowerShell profile script. - Temporarily remove a custom command or set the profile to a known shell executable, then save the file.
- Start a new tab and restore custom entries one at a time to identify the offending setting.
If PowerShell itself runs a profile script, test it without that script from a separate PowerShell window, then repair the script rather than repeatedly changing Terminal.

3. Reset Terminal configuration
A damaged JSON file can prevent launch, corrupt profile behavior or produce repeated crashes. Back up your settings, color schemes and key bindings before resetting.
- Open Terminal settings and use the reset or restore-defaults option if your build provides one.
- If Terminal will not open, close all Terminal and shell windows.
- Navigate to the appropriate LocalState folder for stable, Preview or unpackaged Terminal.
- Rename
settings.jsontosettings.json.backuprather than deleting it immediately. - For Windows Terminal 1.10 and later, also rename
state.jsontostate.json.backup. Microsoft states that removingstate.jsonis required for a complete return to defaults. - Launch Terminal again. Windows should create fresh default files. If it starts, copy custom settings back gradually, validating the JSON after each change.
Renaming preserves a recovery copy. Do not restore the entire old file if the crash returns; copy individual profiles or key bindings so you can isolate the invalid entry.
4. Repair, update or reinstall the correct package
First identify whether you use the stable Microsoft Store package, the Preview package or an unpackaged installation. Mixing files from different sources can leave a shortcut pointing to a package that is no longer registered.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for Windows Terminal or Windows Terminal Preview.
- Open the app’s advanced options. If available, choose Terminate, then Repair. Repair attempts to correct the installation without removing personal data.
- If Repair does not help, back up settings and choose Reset. Reset removes app data, so expect to recreate custom profiles and appearance settings.
- Install pending Windows and Microsoft Store updates, then restart Windows.
- If the package is missing or still fails, uninstall that package and reinstall Windows Terminal from the same official source. Do not download a file advertised as a replacement
terminal.exe.
For an unpackaged installation, use the installation’s original distribution and verify that its shortcut points to the expected executable. A package repair will not repair an unrelated third-party program that happens to be named terminal.exe.
5. Fix renderer and display problems
Blurry text, black bars, unusual colors and flicker can result from the combination of Terminal’s renderer, graphics hardware and display environment. Virtual machines, Remote Desktop sessions and power-saving modes can also affect acrylic effects.
- Open Terminal settings and review the rendering options recommended for your build. Test a different text-rendering or graphics setting, then restart Terminal.
- Turn off acrylic or transparency effects when the problem occurs only with those effects.
- Compare a local session with a Remote Desktop or virtual-machine session. If the defect appears only remotely, keep effects disabled there.
- Install Windows updates and the graphics driver supplied for your hardware. If a new driver introduced the problem, use Device Manager’s driver rollback option when it is available.
- Test a different window size, monitor and scaling percentage to distinguish a display-scaling issue from a Terminal configuration issue.
6. Repair a broken wt.exe registration
Windows Terminal’s troubleshooting documentation uses the per-user App Paths registration to diagnose launch failures. Open Command Prompt and run:
reg query "HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionApp Pathswt.exe" /sThe result should show a registration that points into a Microsoft.WindowsTerminal package directory under C:Program FilesWindowsApps. If the key is missing or points to a folder that no longer exists, repair or reinstall the corresponding package instead of editing the registry by hand. Registry edits made without a backup can affect every user launch.
7. Collect diagnostics for a repeatable crash
If reset and reinstall do not solve a crash, collect evidence before making more changes. Microsoft Terminal’s troubleshooting guidance describes Task Manager dumps, Windows Error Reporting LocalDumps and trace files.
- Reproduce the crash once and note the exact time, Windows edition and Terminal package type.
- In Task Manager, right-click the failing process and choose Create dump file when available.
- Use Windows Error Reporting LocalDumps only if you understand where the dump will be written and who will receive it.
- Record the output of the
reg querycommand above and the full executable path. - Share dumps and traces only with trusted support. They can contain visible console text, command input, file paths and other sensitive information.
What to do when the file is genuinely suspicious
If the executable is unsigned, located in a temporary or random directory, launches from an unexplained startup item, or is detected by Windows Security, disconnect the affected PC from sensitive accounts while you investigate. Do not run the file again to “test” it. Use Windows Security’s quarantine and scan controls, remove the associated startup or scheduled-task entry after recording its details, and install pending security updates. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, contact its administrator before deleting files or changing policies.
Keep the original path, signer information, detection name and timestamps. Those details help distinguish a false positive or unrelated utility from a compromised installation and make professional troubleshooting more efficient.
When the manual fixes do not solve the problem
Escalate when Terminal crashes for every Windows account, Windows Security reports a threat, system files show broader corruption, or the same executable reappears after removal. A clean second user profile can reveal whether the fault is confined to one user’s settings. If only one account fails, reset that account’s Terminal configuration; if all accounts fail, repair the package or Windows components.
