Steam Next Fest is a recurring, weeklong Steam event where players can browse and play free demos of upcoming games. You can also watch developer livestreams when offered and wishlist games to follow their launch. Each demo is different: its content, length, requirements, and availability are set by the game’s developer.

What happens during Steam Next Fest?

Valve describes Next Fest as an event focused on promoting upcoming games through playable demos. It is a discovery event, not a single game or paid subscription. Steam holds editions in February, June, and October, though exact dates and participation deadlines vary by edition. Steamworks’ Next Fest overview explains the recurring format.

On the festival page, players can explore games by categories and tags, open individual game pages, and try available demos. Some developers also livestream gameplay or answer questions. Wishlisting a game is optional; it lets you keep track of it and can provide a Steam notification when the full game launches. Steam’s June 2025 announcement describes these player options.

How do Steam Next Fest demos work for players?

A demo is a playable preview of one game. Steam does not impose a universal duration or standard amount of content, so one may offer a brief introduction while another provides a larger slice of the game. Check the individual game page for what is included, controls, system requirements, accessibility details, and any stated access window.

  • Wi-Fi 6E

  • Browse: Use the event’s categories and game tags to find titles that fit your interests.
  • Check the game page: Confirm that the demo is available in your region and review its stated requirements and scope.
  • Install and play: The festival demos are free to try. A demo is separate from the full game; playing it does not mean you own or have access to the eventual release.
  • Follow games you like: Wishlist a title if you want to keep track of it and receive launch updates through Steam.
  • Watch if you want: Developer streams are an optional way to see more of a game, not a requirement for participating.

Do demos disappear when Next Fest ends?

Not necessarily. A developer may publish a demo before the festival, make it public for Press Preview or just before the event, and decide afterward whether to keep it available or deactivate it. Steam encourages developers to tell players if access is going to end, but there is no rule that every demo disappears when the festival closes. If you want to try a particular game, check its page for the developer’s availability notice rather than assuming the event’s end date is also the demo’s end date. Steam’s developer guidance covers demo timing and post-event access.

When is the next Steam Next Fest?

As of October 7, 2026, Steam’s next listed edition is Steam Next Fest: October 2026. It is scheduled to run October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT through October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT (UTC−7). The Press Preview begins October 8 at 10:00 AM PDT. These are edition-specific dates; check Steam’s October 2026 edition page for any updates and exact deadlines.

How can a developer participate?

Participation requires preparation beyond uploading a build. For October 2026, Steam’s edition-specific eligibility rules require a Steamworks account in good standing, a published and public store page for the base game, an upcoming unreleased game that is not a prologue or short-form version of already released content, and a publicly playable demo by the event start. A game may participate in only one Next Fest, and it must remain unreleased until the festival concludes. For the October edition, that means the game cannot release before October 26. See the October 2026 rules for the binding edition requirements.

  1. Register the base game: Use the base game’s Steamworks page, not the demo’s. The October 2026 registration deadline was August 31, 2026, at 11:59 PM PDT; that date has passed. Developers who already registered should verify their status in Steamworks. Do not assume registration is still open.
  2. Create a separate demo app: Set up a demo-type app associated with the base game, then prepare its build and store assets for Steam review.
  3. Meet the edition’s review and launch deadlines: Steam recommends submitting well ahead of the event and making the demo live at least 30 minutes before the start to allow time to catch launch problems. For October 2026, the demo must be public by October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT; consult the edition page for earlier review milestones.
  4. Choose categories and check placement: Registration asks for one or two primary categories, alongside the game’s store tags. A developer preview can help teams check where a game appears.
  5. Decide on optional livestreaming and post-event access: Livestreaming is optional. Developers should also decide how long the demo will remain available and communicate any planned removal to players.

Steam says visibility is randomized in most locations for the first few days, except for named lists and personalized sections. Later, some logged-in carousels are personalized based on user behavior. Participation therefore offers a way to present a game, not a guaranteed number of views, sales, wishlists, or press coverage. Steamworks’ overview describes event visibility and livestreaming.

What does Steam’s demo review check?

Steam’s build review checks whether the demo runs and includes the features the developer promised. It is not full quality assurance and does not look for most bugs, so approval is not a guarantee of a bug-free experience. Developers can update a demo after it passes review, but Steam says those later updates are not reviewed again. Steam’s demo setup guidance explains the limits of the review.

Which edition should a developer choose?

Because a title can join only one Next Fest, the decision should fit the game’s development and release plan. Steam says developers can choose an earlier festival to gather feedback or one closer to launch to build interest. Consider whether the demo is ready, how much time the team needs for review and testing, whether it can be public by the deadline, and how the event date fits the planned release. The October 2026 dates and requirements are listed on Steam’s edition page; do not carry its deadlines over to a different edition.
