Steam Next Fest is a recurring showcase for demos of upcoming, unreleased games; Steam’s other Fests are usually organized around a genre or theme. The formats can overlap—some themed Fests include both demos and discounts—so “Steam Game Festivals” is not the name of one single event with one set of rules.
What is Steam Next Fest?
Steam Next Fest is Steam’s recurring event for discovering and trying games that have not yet been released. Steam said in its June 9, 2025 announcement that it hosts Next Fest three times a year—in February, June, and October—to give developers an audience for demos of unreleased games. The event is centered on playable demos, not on a blanket sale. Steam’s June 2022 description also highlighted browsing by category and tags, developer livestreams, and chats. Steam’s June 2022 announcement
How is Next Fest different from other Steam Fests?
Other Steam Fests are commonly organized around a genre, subject, or type of game. For example, Steam’s 2025 Zombies vs. Vampires Fest announcement described an event with discounts and demos for games featuring those themes. That makes the practical distinction the event’s organizing idea: Next Fest spotlights unreleased games and their demos, while a themed Fest groups games by topic and may include deals as well as demos.

| What to compare | Steam Next Fest | Other themed Steam Fests |
|---|---|---|
| Organizing idea | Upcoming, unreleased games and their demos | A genre, theme, or type of game |
| What players can do | Try demos and discover future releases | Browse games connected to the theme; demos and discounts may be offered |
| Discovery | Categories, tags, and event programming such as livestreams | The event’s theme and any demos or deals it features |
| Timing | Steam said in 2025 that it runs three editions yearly: February, June, and October | Varies by event; check that event’s Steam page |
These are broad distinctions, not a rulebook for every Steam event. Check the page for the specific Fest to confirm what it includes and when it runs.
What can players do during Steam Next Fest?
- Find demos by interest. Browse categories, tags, subgenres, or features to narrow the selection to games you might enjoy.
- Try games for free. Next Fest demos are free to play during the event. Their availability afterward is up to each game’s developer, so do not assume every demo disappears when the event ends.
- Watch developers present their games. Steam has included developer livestreams and chats in Next Fest programming; check the event page for what is scheduled for a particular edition.
- Wishlist games you want to follow. Steam says wishlisting can help you receive notice when a game launches.
When is the next Steam Next Fest?
As of October 7, 2026, Steam News search results list the October 2026 edition for October 19–26. Those dates are time-sensitive; confirm them on Steam’s live Next Fest search results before making plans. Steam’s published 2025 cadence is February, June, and October, but the specific dates for an edition should be checked on its event page.

How to tell which event you are looking at
- Open the event’s Steam page and read its title and description.
- Look for whether it is presenting unreleased games and demos, or grouping games by a theme or genre.
- Check the page for the particular activities on offer—such as demos, discounts, livestreams, or chats—rather than assuming every Fest follows the same format.
- For a demo you want to play later, check that game’s store page or developer updates after the event; access windows can differ by game.
