Google documents voice search on a computer through Google Search in a desktop browser: open google.com and click the microphone button in the Search bar. The Google app for desktop has a different documented workflow: type a query into its Windows app. Its current help does not describe voice input, which is a documentation distinction—not proof that voice input is technically impossible.
How the two desktop workflows differ
| What you need | Google app for desktop | Google Search in a desktop browser |
|---|---|---|
| How to start | Launch the Windows app; Alt + Space is one documented shortcut. | Open google.com and click the microphone button in the Search bar. |
| Documented query input | Type a query, choose a suggestion if useful, then press Enter. | Click the microphone and speak a query. |
| Documented scope | Search the web, Google Drive, local files and installed apps; use AI Mode, Lens and screen sharing through their separate workflows. | Speak a query to Google Search, including questions, definitions or song-identification queries. |
| Microphone setup | The app’s cited help does not describe voice-search setup. | Chrome site permission, operating-system microphone permission and the selected input device can affect access. |
| Availability | Google says the app requires Windows 10 or later. AI Mode is not supported for every account, country or language. | Google documents the desktop browser workflow; the cited product page does not give a further browser-specific restriction. |
Google’s desktop app instructions describe entering a typed query and pressing Enter. The app is a Windows application with search features that extend beyond a spoken web query. Google’s Chrome product page describes voice search on a computer through the microphone button on google.com.

Use voice search in a desktop browser
- Open google.com in a desktop browser.
- Click the microphone icon in the Google Search bar.
- If prompted, allow the site to use your microphone, then speak your query.
This is click-to-speak Search input, not necessarily hands-free activation. Google’s January 2024 Assistant update explained that the Google app microphone icon triggers Search results; it should not be treated as a general Google Assistant command control.
If Google Search cannot hear your microphone
Work through these checks in order; a browser permission and a computer privacy setting can each block microphone access.

- In Chrome’s settings, confirm the correct microphone is selected as the default input device.
- Return to google.com and click the Search microphone again.
You do not necessarily need to buy another microphone: Chrome can use an available built-in or connected input device. If you do not have a working mic or want a different input, a USB microphone for desktop is one option, but Google’s instructions do not require a particular model or new hardware.
What the audio-history setting does—and does not do
Google’s Voice and Audio Activity guidance concerns audio from Google Assistant interactions. The optional setting is off unless enabled; when enabled, Assistant audio recordings can be saved with Web & App Activity. Turning it off stops future Assistant recordings from being saved to the Google Account on Google servers through that setting, but it does not delete recordings already saved. Google says settings are rolling out gradually, so account screens may differ.

That description does not establish how every browser Search voice interaction is retained or controlled. Do not assume this Assistant-specific setting governs all spoken queries made through a browser microphone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAvailability and platform notes
The Google app for desktop help lists Windows 10 or later and an age requirement of 13 or older. Google also qualifies AI Mode availability by account, country and language. These are app-specific notes; they should not be carried over as restrictions on desktop browser voice Search without supporting documentation.

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
Google’s separate Android Voice Search instructions have their own language, country and region caveat. That mobile qualification is not evidence of the same limitation for desktop browser Search.
