Next select the correct input device and confirm its level. If those checks fail, update and restart Chrome before rejoining.
“Google app for desktop” can refer to different products. The desktop troubleshooting steps below apply to Google Meet in a browser, not to a separately installed Google desktop app. Google describes computer use of Meet in its Meet requirements.

1. Check that you are not muted
In the Meet call, check the microphone control and unmute yourself if necessary. If you use a headset, also inspect its cable and physical mute switch. A headset can be muted even when Meet shows your microphone as available. Google Chrome Help covers both headset mute controls and microphone troubleshooting in its camera and microphone guidance.
2. Check microphone access at each level
Microphone access has three gates: Meet’s permission for the site, Chrome’s permission for sites, and your computer’s operating-system permission. Google Meet Help states: “To use your microphone in Meet, you must provide microphone access to: Google Meet, Your browser, Your device.” If any one of these blocks access, Meet may not receive audio.

Allow microphone access for the Meet site
Open the Meet page. Select the site information control beside the address bar, find Microphone, and allow it for the site. If the control is not visible, check Chrome’s site settings for Meet.
Check Chrome’s microphone setting
In Chrome’s address bar, open chrome://settings/content/microphone. Confirm that sites are allowed to ask to use the microphone and that Meet is not listed as blocked. If you use a work or school Chrome profile, an administrator may manage this setting.

Allow access in the operating system
- Windows: Open Settings > System > Sound > Microphone. Check that microphone access is allowed and that the input level is not too low.
- macOS: Open System Settings > Sound > Input to check the selected microphone and its input level. Also check microphone privacy access for Chrome. Exact privacy labels can vary by macOS release.
- Linux: Check the distribution’s sound settings and documentation. The steps and permission controls vary by distribution.
3. Select the intended microphone and check its level
Meet can be pointed at a different input from the one you expect. Select the intended microphone in Meet and check that the computer’s recording or input settings use the same device. Raise the input level if it is too low. If you use Bluetooth, make sure the microphone is powered on and connected to the computer.

4. Update and restart Chrome
If permissions and input settings are correct but Meet still cannot use the microphone, update Chrome. Then enter chrome://restart in the address bar. Chrome will close and reopen its windows; return to Meet and rejoin the call. Google advises restarting after an update because simply closing Chrome may not reset apps or extensions that are using the microphone.
5. If Chrome still cannot access the microphone on macOS
Google’s Known issues with Google Meet page describes enabling Chrome or Firefox in macOS microphone privacy settings and then restarting Chrome. The exact setting names and location depend on the macOS release, so look for microphone access in System Settings’ privacy controls.
