This uses Windows voice typing to fill in the search box; it is different from using a microphone control built into a search engine.
Choose how you want to speak a search
There are two practical routes: dictate words into a search field, or use a search website’s own voice-search control if it is available to you. The first route is well documented for Windows. Availability and steps for a search-engine microphone control can vary, so do not assume every desktop Google Search page shows one.

Use Windows voice typing in a browser
- Open a browser and click the search field where you want the query to appear.
- Make sure the computer has a working microphone and an internet connection.
- Press Windows key + H on a hardware keyboard. Microsoft also documents starting voice typing from the microphone button on the touch keyboard.
- Wait for the “Listening…” alert, then say your query.
- Check the recognized words, correct them if needed, and use the search field’s normal submit action.
- When finished, say “Stop listening” or select the microphone button in the voice typing menu.
Microsoft describes Windows 11 voice typing as using online speech recognition. Its documentation also notes that some newer features are limited to Copilot+ PCs or particular locales, so behavior can differ by device and region. The basic shortcut is a way to dictate into a text box, not proof that the search engine itself is listening.

Use Chrome Talk to Type instead
Chrome Talk to Type is another way to put spoken words into a search box, particularly if you want to dictate or refine text on a webpage. Google says it works on desktop macOS, Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS. Before using it, sign in to Chrome, allow microphone access, and use a non-Incognito window.

- For the first use, click a text field, right-click, and choose Talk to Type.
- Grant the requested microphone access and consent when prompted.
- Speak the query into the field. On later uses, Google documents Option + Space on macOS and Ctrl + Space on Windows and ChromeOS as shortcuts.
- Select Done or press the shortcut again to finish. Switching tabs stops listening.
- Submit the text in the search field as you normally would.
Google says Chrome collects the voice recording, typed words, and page details to help rewrite and polish text. That is a distinct data practice to consider before opting in; do not treat this as equivalent to activating a search page’s microphone control.
Microphone access, internet use, and privacy
Voice typing needs an active microphone and, for Microsoft’s documented Windows voice typing, an internet connection. Microsoft says Windows 11 users can use voice typing without contributing voice clips; contributing clips is optional. Windows also requires supported apps to request permission before accessing the microphone or listening for voice keywords, and the taskbar shows a microphone indicator when an app is listening.

Windows 10 distinguishes device-based speech recognition, which processes speech locally and sends no voice data to Microsoft, from online speech recognition, which sends voice data to Microsoft to provide the service and create transcriptions. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so those settings are not current long-term support guidance.

Google’s Voice & Audio Activity setting is an optional account-history control for Google Assistant interactions, not a master switch for every microphone feature. Google says it is off unless enabled; turning it off prevents audio recordings from being saved to the account through Web & App Activity when interacting with Assistant, but Google still processes audio to respond to spoken requests. The setting does not control separate Assistant audio settings or other Google services.

If voice typing does not work
- No text appears: Click inside the search field again, verify the microphone works, and confirm the device is online. Windows voice typing requires all three conditions.
- The listening prompt never appears: On Windows, try Windows key + H again with a text field focused. For Chrome Talk to Type, confirm microphone access, Chrome sign-in, and that the window is not Incognito.
- Chrome Talk to Type stops: Switching tabs stops listening; return to the text field and restart it.
- Your computer has no usable microphone: Many computers have a built-in microphone. If yours does not, a compatible external computer microphone is an optional way to meet the microphone requirement; no particular brand is necessary.
