What Is starmaker.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix starmaker.exe Errors on Windows

starmaker.exe is not established as a standard Windows component or as an officially documented StarMaker Windows executable. A filename alone cannot tell you whether a particular copy is safe. Treat the file as unidentified until you check its full path, the application that launched it, its publisher and digital signature, its dates and hash, and the results of an up-to-date malware scan. Do not run, delete, or replace it blindly.

This guide shows how to investigate one specific starmaker.exe file, remove it when it belongs to unwanted software, and troubleshoot launch or invalid-application errors without downloading a replacement from an untrusted executable site. StarMaker mobile-app problems are covered separately because the official support information concerns the app, not a Windows executable with this name.

What starmaker.exe is—and what is not established

Windows executable files use the .exe extension. The name starmaker.exe suggests a program associated with StarMaker, but the name itself proves neither ownership nor safety. The authoritative material reviewed for this topic does not identify starmaker.exe as a Windows system file or verify it as an official StarMaker Windows program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

StarMaker’s official support information focuses on its mobile application. For incomplete installation and login problems, it advises updating the app or deleting and reinstalling it. That support guidance does not authenticate a Windows file called starmaker.exe. A copy on your computer could therefore be an installer component, a file left by another application, a renamed program, a corrupted download, or unwanted software. Only file-specific evidence can distinguish those possibilities.

Why the filename is insufficient

  • Legitimate programs can use familiar names, and unwanted programs can copy them.
  • A file stored in a user-download folder has a different provenance from a signed file installed with a program you intentionally obtained.
  • A valid digital signature supports publisher identity and file integrity, but it does not prove that the program is appropriate for your computer.
  • An unsigned or invalidly signed file deserves extra scrutiny, but the absence of a signature alone is not a malware verdict.

Is starmaker.exe safe?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Assess the particular copy using the checks below. A file is more credible when you can connect it to software you deliberately installed from a trusted source, its path is expected, the signer is valid and expected, the hash remains consistent with the installer you obtained, and current security scans find nothing suspicious. A file is more concerning when it appeared unexpectedly, runs from a temporary or obscure folder, has no valid signer, changes after installation, or is detected by security tools.

Check What a reassuring result looks like What requires caution
Full path A location clearly belonging to an application you installed intentionally. A random temporary, downloads, roaming-profile, or obscure system-looking folder with no known parent application.
Parent process The file is launched by the application or installer you recognize. An unrelated process, script host, document, or startup entry launches it without an obvious reason.
Publisher and signature A valid signature from an expected publisher, with Windows reporting that the signature is intact. No signature, an invalid signature, or a signer you do not recognize.
Provenance You can identify when and why the file was installed. It appeared after a bundled download, a suspicious popup, or an installation you do not remember.
Scan result Current Microsoft Defender scans report no threat. Defender, Microsoft Safety Scanner, or another trusted security product detects the file or related components.
Behavior It runs only when the associated program is used and has no unexplained persistence. It starts at boot, creates repeated alerts, changes settings, or consumes resources without a known purpose.

Microsoft explains that a SmartScreen reputation warning is a reason to use caution, especially for an uncommon or unsigned download, not automatic proof that the program is malicious. Do not bypass the warning merely because the filename looks familiar.

Do this before opening or deleting the file

  1. Do not launch it. If it is already running, avoid interacting with its window until you have recorded details.
  2. Do not delete it immediately. Deleting a file without identifying its parent application can break a legitimate installation and remove evidence needed for diagnosis.
  3. Disconnect only when appropriate. If the file is actively producing suspicious network or system behavior, disconnecting from the network can limit exposure while you investigate. Keep the computer powered on if you need to preserve a running-process record.
  4. Record the location. In Task Manager or File Explorer, copy the complete path, including the drive letter and every folder.
  5. Note the trigger. Write down whether it appeared after an installation, a browser download, a login attempt, a game, a startup event, or an error message.
  6. Back up personal data. Before making system changes, copy important documents to a known-safe location. Do not back up the executable itself as though it were trusted.

Find which program is using starmaker.exe

When the file is running

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On Windows 11, select Details. On Windows 10, open the Details tab.
  3. Locate starmaker.exe. If it is not visible, use the search field or expand the relevant process group.
  4. Right-click the process and choose Open file location. Record the path shown in File Explorer.
  5. Use Properties on the file to continue with the publisher and signature checks.

If Task Manager shows several copies, record each path. Identically named files in different folders are separate objects and may have different origins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the file is not running

Search File Explorer from This PC for starmaker.exe. Include hidden items if you normally hide them, but do not change system-protection settings just to make a guess. For each result, record the path, file size, creation date, and modification date. A result in a user’s Downloads folder may be an installer that never completed; a result inside a program folder may belong to an installed application. Neither location proves safety.

Inspect properties, publisher, and digital signature

  1. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  2. On the General tab, note the size, creation and modification dates, and whether Windows displays an Unblock option. An unblock option indicates that Windows marked the file as coming from another computer or the internet; it does not prove the file is unsafe.
  3. Open Details and record the product name, description, original filename, company, and version. Missing or contradictory fields increase uncertainty.
  4. Open Digital Signatures, if present. Select each signature and choose Details.
  5. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and inspect the signer. Compare the signer with the application you believe installed the file.

A valid signature means the signed content has not been altered since signing and identifies the signer according to Windows’ certificate checks. It does not establish that the program is an official StarMaker component, nor does it guarantee harmless behavior. An absent, invalid, expired, or unexpected signature is a reason to stop and investigate further rather than an automatic verdict.

Calculate a hash when provenance matters

A cryptographic hash gives you a reproducible fingerprint for the exact bytes in the file. It is useful when you are comparing the file with a trusted installer or asking a security administrator to examine it. Hashes are not meaningful without a known-good value for comparison.

  1. Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell.
  2. Run Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath "C:fullpathstarmaker.exe", replacing the path with the recorded location.
  3. Save the resulting hash with the date and file path.
  4. Compare it only with a hash published by the software’s trusted publisher or generated from an installer you obtained through a trusted channel.

If no trusted reference hash exists, treat the result as an identification record, not a safety certificate. Do not upload a potentially sensitive executable to an unknown scanning website.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scan with Microsoft Defender

Microsoft recommends keeping Windows and antivirus definitions current and running a full Microsoft Defender scan when unwanted software is suspected.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Protection updates and select Check for updates.
  3. Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, and select Full scan.
  4. Start the scan and allow it to finish. A full scan can take a long time, especially on a large drive.
  5. If Defender identifies starmaker.exe or related items, follow the quarantine or removal action it offers. Record the detection name and path before closing the result.
  6. Restart Windows if requested, then run another scan to confirm the detection does not return.

A clean scan reduces concern but does not turn an unidentified file into an official Windows or StarMaker component. Keep the path, signature, and provenance findings with the scan result.

Use Microsoft Safety Scanner for a second manual check

Microsoft Safety Scanner is a separate manual malware-removal tool designed to find and remove malware from Windows computers. Download it from Microsoft when you are ready to scan, select the version that matches your Windows architecture, and run it with administrative permission.

Microsoft states that Safety Scanner expires 10 days after download. If you need to scan later, download a fresh copy rather than reusing the old executable. The tool is not a replacement for regularly updated security protection. Save its report and note whether it identified the file or another component that explains why starmaker.exe appeared.

Check SmartScreen and download provenance

When Windows displays a SmartScreen warning, read the publisher and source details instead of selecting an option automatically. Microsoft’s guidance is that caution is warranted before running a downloaded program, particularly when it is not digitally signed. An uncommon program can trigger a reputation warning without being malicious, while a familiar-looking name can still be abused.

  • Identify the website, email attachment, archive, or installer that supplied the file.
  • Check whether the download came directly from a publisher you intended to use.
  • Do not disable SmartScreen merely to make the file run.
  • If the source cannot be established, quarantine or remove the file after preserving its path and scan information.

Determine whether an installed application owns the file

Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10. Sort by install date and look for software installed around the time the executable appeared. Select a suspected application and review its available options.

Repair or reset before uninstalling

Some Windows applications provide Advanced options with Repair and Reset. Repair attempts to correct the installation while preserving application data where supported. Reset returns the app to a fresh state and may remove its local data. Use these options only after confirming that the application is one you recognize. If the executable is suspicious, repairing it is not a substitute for scanning and removal.

Uninstall a known unwanted application

  1. In the installed-apps list, select the application associated with the recorded path.
  2. Choose Uninstall and follow the vendor’s removal dialog.
  3. Restart Windows when prompted.
  4. Search again for starmaker.exe and rescan the remaining files.

If uninstalling fails, Microsoft provides a Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter for installation, update, and removal problems. Use it for a recognized application and keep the troubleshooter’s result. Do not use a random “uninstaller” downloaded from an unfamiliar site.

Remove an untrusted starmaker.exe safely

After you have recorded the path and completed scans, removal depends on the evidence. If Microsoft Defender or Safety Scanner detects the file, use the security product’s quarantine or removal workflow. If the file is clearly an installer left in Downloads and you do not need it, delete it and empty the Recycle Bin after confirming no recognized application depends on it.

If the file belongs to a program you intentionally installed but the signature or behavior is unexpected, uninstall the entire program through Windows Settings rather than deleting only the executable. Removing one file can leave services, scheduled tasks, startup entries, or damaged dependencies behind.

When Windows says the file is in use

  1. Close the application that opened the file.
  2. In Task Manager, end the associated process only when you recognize it and have saved your work.
  3. Try the uninstall or deletion again.
  4. If the process restarts, inspect Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager’s Startup apps list for an entry tied to the same application.
  5. Run a Defender scan before attempting more invasive changes.

Do not delete arbitrary files from Windows, System32, or other protected folders based only on the filename. If Windows identifies the file as required by a recognized program, repair or uninstall that program instead.

Fix common starmaker.exe errors

“The application was unable to start” or an invalid application message

An invalid executable error can result from a damaged download, an architecture mismatch, malware, or antivirus blocking. First record the exact wording and path, then scan the file. Do not assume that downloading another copy from an executable or DLL mirror will solve the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the file belongs to software you meant to install.
  2. Check the file’s signature and details.
  3. Run current Defender definitions and a full scan.
  4. Uninstall the associated application if it is unwanted or its installation is damaged.
  5. If it is a legitimate application, obtain a fresh installer from its trusted publisher and reinstall it after removing the broken installation.
  6. If normal Windows still blocks the file, test the recognized application in Safe Mode only for diagnosis. Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services; it is not a safety guarantee and should not be used to bypass a security detection.

“starmaker.exe has stopped working” or repeated crashes

Repeated crashes can come from corruption, incompatible architecture, damaged dependencies, security blocking, or a faulty parent application. Record when the crash occurs, whether it happens at startup or only after a particular action, and whether the Event Viewer entry names the same path.

  1. Update Windows and the recognized parent application through their normal trusted channels.
  2. Use the application’s Windows Repair option when available.
  3. Run Defender and Safety Scanner checks before reinstalling.
  4. Uninstall and reinstall the parent application if its files are damaged.
  5. If the file is not tied to software you recognize, remove the associated program rather than trying to make the executable run.

“Missing DLL” or dependency errors

A missing-library message does not mean you should download an individual DLL from a random website. The library may be part of a damaged application installation, and replacing one file can introduce an unsafe or incompatible version.

  1. Capture the exact DLL name and the executable’s full path.
  2. Scan the system and the parent application.
  3. Use the application’s repair or reinstall process from a trusted source.
  4. Install Windows updates and any required official runtime component only when the recognized publisher or Microsoft documentation identifies it as a requirement.

SmartScreen blocks execution

Keep the block in place while you investigate. Verify the source, signature, path, and scan results. If you cannot establish a trusted origin, remove the file. If the file is from a recognized publisher and scans are clean, contact that publisher for a current installer rather than disabling SmartScreen globally.

Keep StarMaker app troubleshooting separate

If your problem is with the StarMaker mobile app—such as an incomplete installation or login failure—the official support guidance is to update the app or delete and reinstall it. Those steps address the mobile application and do not validate a Windows executable named starmaker.exe.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a phone or tablet, use the device’s normal app store and account settings. For a Windows file, follow the path, signature, provenance, and malware-scan workflow in this article. Do not infer that a working mobile app makes every Windows file with the same name legitimate.

What to do if removal keeps failing

Use a clean restart path

If the file repeatedly returns, note the time it reappears and inspect startup apps, scheduled tasks, and the installed application that owns its folder. Remove the parent application through Settings before deleting residual files. A scan that finds a related component is more useful than repeatedly deleting the visible executable.

Try Safe Mode only for diagnosis and removal

Safe Mode can prevent some third-party programs from loading, which may allow a recognized unwanted application to be uninstalled. It does not make an unknown executable safe. Run a security scan, remove the parent application, restart normally, and scan again. If the file persists, preserve the path and detection information for professional support rather than deleting protected system files.

Escalate when evidence conflicts

Seek help from your organization’s administrator or a qualified technician when the signer is unexpected, multiple copies appear, scans disagree, the file recreates itself, or the computer shows other unexplained changes. Provide the full path, hash, signature details, detection names, installation timeline, and exact error text. Do not send passwords or private documents with the sample.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify that the problem is resolved

  • Restart Windows normally.
  • Confirm that the original error no longer appears.
  • Search all drives again for starmaker.exe.
  • Check Task Manager for a running process with that name.
  • Review installed apps and startup entries for the parent program.
  • Run a current Defender scan; use a newly downloaded Safety Scanner copy if you need its separate check.
  • Confirm that unrelated applications, network access, and Windows updates work normally.

Keep the recorded path and scan report for a reasonable period if the file was detected or removed. If the executable returns, the remaining cause is likely an installer, startup entry, scheduled task, or another component rather than the deleted file alone.

Prevent similar uncertainty

  • Download software from the publisher or a trusted store, not from random executable or DLL repositories.
  • Leave SmartScreen and Microsoft Defender protections enabled.
  • Install Windows updates and keep security definitions current.
  • Review installers for bundled applications and decline anything you did not request.
  • Keep a record of applications you install and where they came from.
  • When an unfamiliar executable appears, investigate its path and signer before launching it.

Choose the next action from the evidence

Evidence Recommended action
Recognized application, expected path, valid expected signature, clean scans Use the application’s repair or reinstall process if it is crashing; do not delete the file merely because its name is unfamiliar.
Recognized application, damaged file or invalid-app error, clean scans Uninstall and reinstall that application from its trusted publisher.
Unknown source, unexpected path, no valid signature Do not run it. Preserve details, scan, and remove the associated application or file when the scan and provenance review support removal.
Security detection Use Defender or Safety Scanner quarantine/removal, restart if requested, and scan again.
Uninstall fails Use Windows’ repair/reset options or Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter for the identified application.
File returns after deletion Investigate the parent application, startup entries, scheduled tasks, and related detections instead of repeatedly deleting the same file.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, settings that add CPU, RAM or disk load, and application-crash records.
