It is designed to manage packet timing and recover from network loss while supporting optional encryption of data-packet payloads. SRT is not a video codec, streaming platform, or physical device: it transports media without specifying its codec, resolution, or frame rate.
What SRT does—and what it does not
The Haivision SRT project describes SRT as a protocol for low-latency live video and audio streaming as well as generic bulk data transfer. It operates at the transport level, carrying an application’s payload across an IP network. The payload might contain video and audio, but SRT itself does not define how that media is encoded or packaged.

- It is: a transport protocol and open-source software implementation.
- It can help with: packet timing and loss recovery on variable or unpredictable network paths.
- It is not: a codec such as H.264, a streaming service, a camera, or a guarantee of sub-second end-to-end playback.
The project’s “sub-second” description is a statement of design intent for the protocol, not a promise about the delay viewers will experience. End-to-end latency depends on settings and the complete workflow, including the network and receiving application.
How SRT handles timing and packet loss
SRT uses UDP transmission with mechanisms intended to improve reliability. At the receiver, a latency buffer holds packets so they can be played in order. That buffer helps absorb jitter and leaves time to recover missing data before it is needed. In effect, the receiver trades some delay for a better opportunity to deliver a continuous, correctly timed stream.

ARQ: request missing packets
With automatic repeat request (ARQ), the receiver reports a missing packet and the sender retransmits it. This can recover losses without adding FEC-style redundancy to every packet, but it needs a working return path, capacity for retransmitted traffic, and enough time in the receiver’s recovery window. If a missing packet is detected too late for the configured buffer, retransmission cannot arrive in time to help playback.
FEC: send redundant information
Forward error correction (FEC) adds redundant information that can let the receiver reconstruct lost data without waiting for a retransmission. Its cost is extra bandwidth, and recovery delay depends on factors such as the number of packets in a group and the stream bitrate. SRT documentation also describes configurations that combine FEC and ARQ; neither method is automatically best for every network.

Choose recovery against the actual constraints
Consider the application’s delay budget, network round-trip time and jitter, available bandwidth, acceptable loss, and whether a reliable return path exists. Retransmission needs time and capacity; FEC spends bandwidth to provide another recovery path. SRT documentation describes efficient and aggressive retransmission algorithms with different overhead and recovery-delay trade-offs. Their exact configuration details can vary by library version, so consult the documentation for the implementation in use rather than treating an algorithm label as a universal setting.
Latency settings: what the documented defaults mean
The Haivision SRT API reference, accessed in 2026, lists receiver-latency defaults of 120 ms in Live mode and 0 ms in File mode. These are library defaults, not recommendations or measured end-to-end results. At connection setup, the negotiated receiver buffering delay is determined by the greater of the local receiver-latency setting and the peer’s latency setting.

In practical terms, a larger buffer gives packets more time to arrive or be recovered, which can help on a difficult path but increases delay. A smaller buffer suits a tighter latency target only if the network and recovery method can meet it. Set latency for the real workflow and test under its expected network conditions; there is no universally correct value.
Encryption and security scope
The SRT protocol draft specifies AES in counter mode (AES-CTR) encryption for data-packet payloads. Packet headers are not encrypted. Key material is exchanged during connection setup, with rekeying described in the protocol. The API documentation also describes passphrase enforcement: by default, incompatible passphrase settings can cause a connection to be rejected.

Payload encryption is useful, but it does not mean every part of a packet or every security concern is covered. Treat endpoint security, configuration, and the handling of connection details as separate parts of a secure deployment.

Where SRT is used and how to try it
Documented use cases include contribution and distribution in video workflows, transport over unpredictable networks, and generic bulk data transfer. SRT is software as well as a protocol: the project provides an open-source library and sample applications, including srt-live-transmit and srt-file-transmit. The repository marks these samples as instructional, not for production use.
Dedicated encoder or decoder hardware can be an endpoint in a professional workflow, but it is not a prerequisite established by the project documentation. For a software integration or deployment, check the library and endpoint documentation for the version and features you intend to use.
SRT compared with TCP, ARQ, FEC, and bonded paths
| Comparison | What changes | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| SRT and TCP | The SRT project describes SRT as using UDP with reliability improvements and lower latency than TCP/IP in its stated design context. | This is the project’s characterization, not a quantified head-to-head benchmark. Actual workflow results depend on conditions and configuration. |
| ARQ and FEC | ARQ requests a missing packet; FEC adds redundancy that can reconstruct losses. Configurations can combine them. | ARQ needs a return path, recovery time, and retransmission capacity. FEC uses bandwidth and has a group-related recovery delay. Choose against the loss pattern and delay budget. |
| Single-path and bonded SRT | Bonding uses more than one IP path, with documented broadcast and main/backup modes. | Bonding can use path diversity or a standby connection, but requires multiple available paths and endpoint support. A single-path setup does not require them. |
Common SRT misconceptions
- “SRT is a codec.” No. It transports a payload and does not dictate the media codec or format.
- “SRT guarantees sub-second playback.” No. The project’s low-latency positioning is not a guaranteed end-to-end result; buffering and network conditions matter.
- “SRT encrypts every packet field.” No. The protocol draft specifies encryption for data-packet payloads, not packet headers.
- “You need dedicated SRT hardware.” No such prerequisite is established; the project provides an open-source library and sample tools, though professional workflows may use dedicated endpoints.
- “The sample applications are production-ready.” The repository identifies them as instructional samples and says not to use them in production.
